I love trying to explain basic synthesis to someone that isn’t familiar with stuff. Like lots of us know what an attenuverter is. How the hell do u explain that and why stuff like that is very important. You are doing a great job! Man.. I’d be struggling to explain this to someone. Gotta love Sweetwater

Excellent information in this video, well done. One trick I do on my old analog synths that don't have velocotiy or AT keybeds is to set a very small ammount of attack on the AMP envelope. If I play quick, the volume doesn't quite make it to "Max", so the loudest volume is shy of full level. If I hold it just a bit longer it gets to full level. So in a way, light "soft" jabs feel like low "velocity/volumes", while straight chord holds reach the full "velocity/volume" level. The volume is very controllable/playable, just experiment between the slight ramp up attack speed agains the comfort of playing with "light" taps. This trick also works well on the Filter envelopes in a similar fashion.

I remember when envelopes were callede "Modifiers" and only LFO's were called "Modulation"

Hi Cl Lyman. Many modern synths can now "Loop" their Envelopes to become complex LFOs, so the differences between the two have blurred. The Modifier term meant more when an Envelope was typically hard wired to a specific parameter such as VFC Cutoff or VCA Volume. Thanks for watching!

@@sweetwater True, but "Modifier" was replace by "Modulation" long berfore that became a thing; see the SQ-80. When Bob Moog worked with Crumar on the "Spirit" monosynth, that feature was included. According to THE WHOLE SYNTHESIZER CATALOG. I wore my copy out well before I could no longer read the printed page. I would love to have it as an ebook or PDF

I've found this super useful for learning modular synth techniques! I think you mixed logarithmic and exponential though 🙃 isnt it the other way around?

Hi PLAY THINK MAKE. Yeah, that's an odd thing that I'm going to have clarify with the ASM folk. You're correct in pointing out that some other synths have that labeling the other way. The Hydrasynth labels it onscreen as I described it. It's probably one of those things that can be quantified from two different perspectives, but I will try to learn more about how they think of it.
