Here is The first of a seven part series of videos I will post on playing Timbales.
This is Part 1, the introduction. I talk about my history with the Timbales as well as some masters of the instrument. I also talk about books, equipment, setups and the Clave and Cascara patterns.
Song form is discussed as well.

When you mentioned Ralph Irizarry, I thought I knew the name. I then did a quick web search and immediately recognized his face--only then to see that we just lost him September 5, 2021. As someone who did not grow up with an insider's perspective of Afro-Cuban music, it always had an intrigue to me. I'm grateful for folks like yourself providing content of this type. As I'm sure you've learned by now, New York City has an EMBARRASSMENT of cultural riches not common to many places, and it would bless the world by continuing to share them, because America as a whole could use a little more culture (know what I'm sayin'?). I hope you don't take for granted how blessed you are to have had that be a part of your environment. On another note, I was fortunate enough to obtain a JCR Half-Moon timbal bell before they went out of production and resellers started price gouging. It will likely remain the Crown Jewel of my bell selection for years to come! God bless you brother, and keep on choppin.' R.I.P. Mr. Irizarry and Mr. Rivera.

Another great video, thanks! I’ve been learning how to play timbales for a year now by watching videos and yours are always very helpful. Ralphy Irizarry from “Seis del Solar” is one of my favorite timbaleros. May he R.I.P. I also watch other players like Marc Quinones, Giovanni Hidalgo and Marc Lopez to name a few. Nicky Marrero is a friend of my family, but he won’t mentor me. Guess I’ll keep watching KZbin videos 👍🏼

I do love the fact that these videos at least seem to be "one take", as in, not having head twitches in between or even during sentences. That annoys me to no end. Keep on at it, this virus has to end someday!

Hi Rick..you mentioned you used to live in NJ. I wonder if you ever heard of a band called " Frankie and the Burn". They played the Jersey shore clubs in Seaside heights Lavellette and etc. When Bernie Dipolito passed a few years ago, the band continued but it wasn't the same w/o him. Bernie played the Timbales and bongos. His speed, tempo and rhythm was incredible and the band was out of this world. Bernie put so much into his playing, he always ended up drenched in sweat like Buddy Rich (My fav drummer). Anyway I always loved these instruments and now going to learn to play them. Thank you for all your time making this great videos.

Nice lesson, good info. btw, I noticed your Gretsch timbale has no backing plates. I preferred the backing plates in all my vintage American drum company timbales to mute the over ring and produce a dryer cascara tone. In some models like Ludwaig when they discontinued backing lates, I notice the lugs tended to shear of from the shell wall cuting the casting and the casting had less backing plate compression to brace its position to the shell which allowed the shearing off of cast lug plates. I expreimented and now I make my own backing plates in various sizes & weights to actually tune the sound of the cascara and still secure the lugs to the shell. I seldom use timbales w/ crude L bracket lugs and heavy bolts since they lack engineering awareness and thus the leverage of the L bracket onto the shell dents the shells inward to warp the shells and even the backing plates do not do the intended job in the case of many timbales. J.C.R. timbales are thicker metal walls and use rigid steel but the J.C.R. lug is far smarter lug design for timbales vs LP, Pearl, and other copy cat brands. ( R.I.P. Cali Rivera of J.C.R. ) I make my own timbales from repurposing various brass alloy shells ( Afro / Pearl ) and use vintage Leedy drum set lugs which are thick, strong and attractive. I have never had to repair on and the engineering of the American drum set tuning system is refined vs crude L brackets. I use vintage eagle claws over the rims & I make my own timbales rims and my own custom rim mounts to stands and bell post rack mount system similar to J.C.R. w/ double bell post. A very logical ergonomic bell set up allowing better bell & wood block set ups. Be well & safe Rick Dior !

wow excellent again Rob. I have the Changuito book. I guess this is the time to start now that you have your timbale videos. I figured I'm a drummer, so another avenue to look into. You definitely inspire!!. Was wondering about the Sabian Ride El sabor you have since they no longer exist. Any thought on maybe the Meinl Candela or the Sabian X-plosion would be another option?

Is JCR still in business? Do you need to have the 2 bells? The Bongo and the timbale bell? I do have the Cha Cha bell... I just bought Tito Puente 256S 13 14 timbales...stainless steel...the stand is pretty strong. My next interest am researching on Bronze Timbales 14 15...just a variation. About your book...where can I purchase it? I see lots of videos on timbales lessons...you knowledge of the business is amazing. Any input for getting better on the lazy hand (left hand) exercises really appreciated. I have subscribed to your channel to educate myself with music info. I want to learn how to read music as well. Much blessings 🙏 and stay safe Thank you.
