Hi Rick, for exercise 8 practicing the muffling with the left hand. Are you muffling on the fill-ins?

Do you know anything about the mallets and specifically their use on timbales in dance bands in cuba. I think I've seen one early video where they are used. I'm surprised I've never seen another timbale player use them given the roots of the instrument. Why did they completely fall out of fashion? I'm suprised that part of the orchestral tradition completely disappeared in popular music.

Yes...the older style of Danzon sometimes used mallets. As the music got louder and more agressive they fell out of style.
