My mum told me her friends ran a pet shop and kept all the male and female gerbils together so of course they had a whole bunch of babies and instead of separating them or trying to sell/adopt them out they took them to a park in GLASGOW and just released the poor things. They were domesticated and likely all died after days or were killed by nasty people in Glasgow. My mum found the story funny but it made me feel sick:( thinking about those poor babies. I do have 3 hamsters and 2 are from pet shops about a year ago but I will never buy from a pet shop again i find it difficult to even walk in and buy pet stuff without ending up in tears looking at the poor animals in there. They were selling my boy who is very obviously a winter white or a mixed breed as a russian dwarf.
@inversija9994 жыл бұрын
I remember reading about something similar in a local newspaper a few years back. It was horrible. If I recall correctly, the article said a big group of gerbils has been caught and placed in an animal rescue centre but I think some of the gerbils died before the group was found. Wonder if it was the same people you mentioned
@sparx95654 жыл бұрын
inversija999 If it was it at least makes me hopeful that a few survived. Its such a wicked thing to do especially as when you open a pet shop its usually because you ‘care’ about animals (even though some develop into hate)

It annoys me so much that pet shops label hybrid dwarf hamsters ( Russian Campbell and winter white interbred ) and they name them as Russian dwarfs or winter whites because hybrids have complicated health problems

This is so sad! Gerbils are not able to get wet as they will get hypothermia and they are not equipped to survive the UK climate. Moreover, if they did survive, they could seriously damage the native eco systems. This comment has really really stressed me out (not commenters fault, I just can't believe it happened) 😞

When I still had rats someone dumped an unwanted rat on my bf and I, she was young and super friendly but a bit underweight, and my bf and I were trying to figure out what to do as we only had boy rats and couldnt put them together but couldnt leave her alone, anyway about a week or so later we suddenly hear tiny squeaks coming from her cage... turns out she was pregnant and had 7 babies! It was an emotional rollercoaster from shock and horror to excitement to stress and anxiety. It was a very interesting time, I wish we could have kept them all but our living situation didn't allow it :( We did keep one of the babies who grew to be the biggest rat I've ever seen and lived to about 2 and a half and unfortunately the mum passed away shortly after a surgery due to an unknown lung disease. Definitely a super weird situation that I dont regret but do not want to happen again.

I'm a *responsible and reputable* gerbil breeder [Royal Wings Gerbils] and I currently have around 48 gerbils at the moment (including singletons, breeding pairs and pups) in my kennel, your story is honestly something I hear almost constantly and it sucks that it happens all too often. I can imagine it would be a huge fun surprise for you as a kid lol the photo you show looks like it was about a week and a half old when you found them at so around 11 days would be correct! I'm really glad you shared this story and have all this documented its a great story with the right information in it. They certainly can be overwhelming when this happens and its too bad its not an experience that ends up going well 99% of the time, even now the information isnt given out very well (thanks mainly to petstores). I really do hope you own gerbils again one day without the crazy 'oops' litters as they really are so incredible when correctly bred and raised

This exact thing happened to me as a child at probably around the same time as you, if not a few years earlier. Posted a notice in the local supermarket and sold one or two but we ended up keeping the rest split into several different male groups and female groups. It was a lot of gerbils! Luckily my care and knowledge is a lot better now and I still intend on owning gerbils in the future. My last set of boys were super personable and sweet much more so that when I had lots of them. I think it's more a case of how much time you spend with them as individuals to make them more people oriented xx

I have two gerbil girls, and have had several in the past. My first ones were from a local pet store, and they lived maybe 2 yrs. My two girls that I have now are from a breeder, and one of them is two and a half years old and the other is two. Neither of them are showing any signs of age or slowing down (if anything, the older one is a lot more intense). I love them very much, but I think they will be my last gerbils, as they require a lot of attention and work that is hard for me with a chronic illness. Would definitely reccomend asking around and finding a breeder you can get to know. Even here in small town Norway, I found one half an hour away.

This is so familiar! 😅 The exact thing happened with my Russian dwarf hamsters. As a 11/12 year old I thought it was great and the small chirping sounds of the babies were super cute. They were so manic and full of energy! My parents were not so impressed but the pet shop did take them back. I was so upset to have to give them up and my parents had to go to the shop without me, I think they were pretty upset as well and that was the last time we got any pets until we got a rescue dog many years later! At least 20 years later I’m keen to open my heart to some more small pets and researching getting some rats. I will be looking for a reputable breeder. Definitely no more pet shops for me.

one of my friends friends got a hamster from a pet store (they obviously hadn't done their research as they also put the hamster in a tiny critter trail cage) and the hamster the got was pregnant, and so the hamster had babies, and the babies had babies etc. and she ended up with 27 hamsters. They got returned to the pet store. Moral of the story, do your research and don't buy from pet stores.

Hey, thank u! Your story is reminiscent of my own story. After having over 30 gerbils in the last two decades, I'm convinced that one should just get a 4 foot long gerbil house, and raise 3 or 4 of them in a nice climbing environment. That's what my family did. It's especially rewarding if one doesn't want to have any breeding. Just get a really big gerbil home, and 3 or 4 of the same sexed gerbils will live fabulously. If the gerbil guys or gals live together right, u can take them out a couple days a week and just enjoy their friendly human bonding. You'll be rewarded, because healthy gerbils with 2 or 3 other friendly gerbils are just like having a couple dogs or cats.

My boyfriend and I recently got a female rat from a fairly reputable pet exotic pet store/pet hotel. She was a pet that was abandoned by her owner and they had been trying to adopt her out for awhile but she got pregnant. We've had some experience with rats before but never a pregnant one and I have no idea what to do. We plan to speak with a vet soon and we only got her by herself because she was showing signs of being stressed around the other rats and it's recommended to separate pregnant rats from others. We were afraid they'd sell the pups as feeders which is a contributing factor to us taking her home. We plan to keep a female pup and rehoming the rest later on when they're older. I welcome any kind of advice since I've never been in this situation before.

This kinda happened with my family, me and my sister each got a dwarf hamster (bad idea, they lived horrible lives, I feel bad, my care has improved) the pet store told us both were girls, they were not, mine was a boy, they had only 2 babies thankfully, we found them when they were probably a week or so old, still pretty young, we had just come back from a trip so they probably gave birth while we were away. I was pretty surprised that the dad just completely left the mom and babies alone, we didn’t even separate them. Once the babies were bigger we gave one to my best friend and one to my sisters friend. We never separated them and the mother died shortly after. I feel bad about that. I don’t know much about the baby that went with my sisters friend but the baby that went my friend lived in that round critter trail... I feel bad about that. The dad lived a normal life, one in a small cage where the owner is an idiot. After he died my friend actually gave her hamster back since he was mean, I can’t blame him, the cage was horrid. He lived in a slightly bigger critter trail until the last month of his life. I finally got him a bin cage with 461 inches of floor space and tons of paper bedding and toys and a nice wheel. He lived a good last month. To bad it was only the last month

I had a similar situation, when I was 12, my mum and I got 2 female Syrian hamsters from a pet store, we had Syrians before, they were in separate cages, but both were pregnant unbeknown to us and they had their babies within 2 weeks of having them 🤦🏼♀️ pet store did buy the babies back from one of the hamsters as my hamster had 5 and my mums hamster had 9, I sold all but 2 of the other litter to my friends at school.

OMG the exact same thing happened to us but i was like 4 and now i feel really bad because we never looked after them properly

The babies were really cute. I think the store should have taken some of the babies as well as give you extra products to accommodate the extra gerbils

Hello Emi, I really want to get Rats, but my parents are saying no. I have shown them how i would look after them and I've played with my friends rats many times before. Do you have any advice? My Parents are against it because of the bad reputation for rats. I've shown them the adoption place, but they are still saying no.

God let me tell youuuu! I got my guinea pig, Chez in March i believe, (from pets at home, cause i’m silly!) and about a month later on April 16th legit around 10:45pm, as i was calming down for the night on the phone to my boyfriend, she was squeaking waaay too loud and even though my boyfriend thought this was adorable, i knew this wasn’t normal for her, so i got up and checked on her, TO MY SURPRISE THERE WAS A BABY GUINEA PIG? I was legit like “oh my god oh my god” and my boyfriend was so confused when i managed to finally say “Chez had a baby”. I had no idea what to do so i just kinda sat there having a panic attack while my boyfriend was asking me if i was joking? like no sis! Meanwhile, Chez had another baby. I had to tell my mum because i’m 17 and living in her house, she was over the moon when she realised that Chez was actually doing okay. We ended up with two baby piggies, both female and now over a month old. So we’re keeping them because i was thinking about getting Chez a cage mate anyway, and pets at home did give us a few chew toys, some small bales of woodshavings, hay and guinea pig nuggets. to this very day, i’m never getting another animal from a pet shop because although the babies are a blessing, it could’ve gone incredibly wrong and i don’t even want to think about the outcome if Chez couldn’t manage!

This happened to me but I only had 8 gerbils. They were my first small pet beside dogs and cats but I got 2 gerbils and they were sisters and the day I got them one died that night so I went and got another one and the male and females were mixed together so i accidentally got a male and I had six babies. I was really little when this happened so I didn't know better.

I just want to ask (not related to this video) ,in my region the pet shop are the breeder ,so should i buy rats from there .
@Emiology4 жыл бұрын
No, often the pet store who breed the animals themselves don’t understand genetics and the health of the animals as well as a proper breeder would. But it’s definitely a better option than a chain pet store but still not perfect

I have 8 now lol. I got sold 2 gerbils.. not knowing one was a female and one was male... yep she had babies. They are 2 weeks old and adorable. I have no breeders here and thought the pet store was smart enough to not keep opposite sex together... nope.

Similar happened to us but we ended up with about 60 in total.

I haven't personally, but it could have gone that way. My sister got two rabbits from my classmate who had an accidental litter. We thought we bought 2 females, in reality it was two males and we didn't notice until they started fighting and one almost castrated the other.

Yup, got 2 ‘female’ guinea pigs from a pet store as a kid. I was delighted but my parents being responsible were less than pleased. Luckily a family my mum childminded for wanted them so they gave 2 to them and we kept another female and neutered the make
