Archie didn't go out of business. Sega didn't renew the contract with Archie because mainly the Ken Pender law suit not to mention he wrote some of the key issue you're talking about. Bad writing aside, Sonic didn't cuck tails for no good reason. He knew Fiona was going to break his heart and thought Tails would move on if she was with someone else. Granted not a good way to go about it (Ken Penders bad writing) but the intention wasn't malicious. And it turned out sonic was right about Fiona as she would join Scourge and become evil again.

The Archie not going out of business part is on me, I'm not really sure why but I thought they folded during the pandemic. I might've been mixing up their flagship comic of the same name being postponed? But either way, good catch. As for Sonic going out with Fiona, I think the reason wasn't to do with Tails (Sonic had previously tried to block Tails's attempts to flirt with her, for the reasons you listed), though it was leant into heavily to setup a Sonic vs Tails fight down the line.

Many people forget that Penders wasn’t always the head writer of Archie Sonic. With some minor exceptions, After endgame he stopped writing Sonic comics (Until the 140s and the Mobius 25 Year later story) and wrote the Knuckles Comic from there on until the Chaos Knuckles story ended. After that, he wrote for the Sonic Comics and wrote more stories around the 140s. People also like to forget that there exist other writers.

It’s mainly because of Penders’ terrible writing. There’s too much drama, too many romantic moments, abuse, etc. It doesn’t fit sonic very well. You should’ve seen what Penders did with Knuckles for his story arcs. I’m glad that they focused a lot more on being like the games for the soft reboot. I feel like the series is even better with IDW with better story arcs, well written, and likable characters (Tangle, Whisper, etc). That’s why I prefer IDW over Archie. Disappointing to see Penders constantly shitting on Ian Flynn for his writing and many other comic artists working on the series.

As much I love the Archie comics, my main issue with them is the storylines revolving the characters’ romantic relationships. Like I really enjoy seeing Sonic and Sally being a romantic couple but since the comics did romance drama, we ended getting the “break-up” bullshit, “finding someone else to date” bullshit, and “being affected by break-up” bullshit. Having a story based on their relationship is fine once in a while but it shouldn’t be one of the focuses throughout the comics. And to add more salt to the wound, when Sonic and Sally do manage to get back together in the comics, Ian Flynn turned them into “Just Friends” after a long amount of issues where they were broken up just because of the shipping wars.

i haven't read archie comics because i'm european (and it's more fun to hear what happened in them secondhand anyways), but i really enjoyed idw run far. a lot of familiar faces make an appearance and the story is nice and action-packed. if you can read them, i'd say they're worth it the only complaints i've found online are that the plot is a little bland (fair enough, tastes are subjective) and that amy is a sally acorn ripoff (i can sorta see why someone would say that, but i could also write an essay to disprove it)

Honestly, I feel like there should be a moment later on where Sonic and Tails talk about it. Perhaps Sonic could be like “Why are you avoiding me? Is this about Fiona?” Tails would probably respond “It isn’t just about Fiona. I’ve been living in your shadow for years, always your sidekick. You knew I liked Fiona, you knew how much she mattered to me, and you went after her anyway. You never respected me as a friend or an equal because you never really saw me as a friend or equal.” At this point, a confused Sonic would probably say “What the heck are you talking about? Where’s this coming from?” Tails would then say “I need to leave again. If I’m ever gonna get out of your shadow, I need some time on my own.” At least, that’s how I would’ve written it. I haven’t read the comics so I’m not sure what happens next.

This conversation actually took place, several chapters later. Tails quarreled with Sonic, and after several punches and nonsense phrases, Tails revealed how he felt. He told how upset he was about always being in Sonic's shadow, how he was struggling to be recognized as a warrior despite his age., and mainly, because Sonic knows how much he loved Fiona and Sonic have stayed with her anyway. Upon hearing this, Sonic revealed that he had done so because he was upset that he had broken up with Sally, In addition to having realized that Fiona wasn't interested in him, and that's why he was left with her imagining that by doing so Tails would forget about her. Archie's Sonic was at its peak quality in its pre-Cerebus syndrome days. The earlier stories didn't take the setting or characters too seriously, reveling in the silliness of talking animals smashing robots. It wasn't high culture by any means, but it was distinctly fun. Introducing this kind of melodrama was basically falling in with comic book trends of the time and it did a disservice to what made the original video games charming. I know there are plenty of people who enjoyed the more well-written of the serious stories, but personally I most fondly remember the earliest volumes.

I read all these but I personally don’t remember what the Cerberus Syndrome arc entailed (was that with the alien creature named E.V.O. or whatever who ends up killing Robotnik in like issue 20 or whatever but then Robotnik’s consciousness gets immediately downloaded into a new body the following issue?) I think the first 50 issues were the golden years. Once they had their big “Endgame” story arc which concluded with issue 50 and killed off the OG Robotnik for good (until the Sonic Adventure tie-in story arc years later where they SORT OF brought him back as Eggman which I never quite understood the context and/or reasoning why) the series started going ALL OVER THE PLACE (probably why I quit reading the series at that point).

You know what? Despite what I said about the 1990s Sonic comics, maybe I should give them another chance (in chronological order, from the mid 1990s - mid 2010s). I mean, then again, I remember reading them as a kid and also a Classic Sonic guy more than a Modern Sonic guy, but even Sonic the Hedgehog (if not Sega of America which I swear has been run by toxic feminists and/or unprofessional writers being dominant) in the early 21st Century can be epic when given to the right hands, and that’s part of how I enjoy the post-2005 Sonic comics (Archie & IDW). Despite being by the same company that brought us Betty & Veronica (which is a lot less famous than people think no matter how many times stores try to shove them up our faces), maybe Archie Sonic has only gone to shit in the early-mid 2000s! But yeah, the first instance of Sally Acorn (and the rest of the Freedom Fighters) being flanderized was at the beginning where somehow, Sally Acorn never apologized for dropping a stick down her ex-boyfriend (Sonic)‘s head, and it really shows in 134 because she thought Sonic was way too immature, misogynistic, egotistical and villainous to defend, just like the rest of the characters before issue 180 (or 160 when Flynn started to write the comics by introducing Blaze to the Archhieverse, and you know she is one of the best (or at least most tolerable) characters in the Sonic franchise when she wasn’t flanderized into Jake Paul or Elizabeth Banks or a Kardashian like Sonic, his best friends Tails, Amy & Knuckles, Shadow (and yet people think the pre-2014 Amy Rose was too good for Sonic and that the edge lord Shadow was mature enough for her “good” personality including being “justifiably” tempwramental) and Eggman in the games).

As a kid I never really cared about the love story aspects of the Sonic comics. I only really cared about the action sequences and the plot. Archie Comics had good plots most of the time but what really drew me away was the apparent lack of consequences and just having good win no matter what. My main examples were of: Super Sonic vs Enerjak: I don't give a fuck about Super Sonic's invincibility rule. Enerjak is LITERALLY using Chaos Energy too! That should've negated the invincibility and had Super Sonic take ACTUAL damage. That not only would've been so cool and badass to see Super Sonic actually getting hurt but to CEMENT Enerjak as being a tangible threat. He could've basically been the Beerus of Archie Comics but nah. Sonic gotta win all the time cause' he's the actual Ultimate Lifeform. Not Shadow the Cuckold. Eggman: The guy had a comic series where he destroyed Knothole and drew Sonic nearly insane by calling him slow AFTER beating the shit out of him AND managed to kidnap everyone putting them into Egg Grapes. This story was GREAT but then you realize "Oops~ We only got 4 parts in this comic arc so Eggman gotta lose anyway~" You mean to tell me, possibly the BEST laid plan by Eggman THAT'S FAR BETTER THAN ANY PLAN IN EITHER THE GAMES OR CARTOONS/TV SERIES gets undone in the last part cause' bullshit plot? C'mon bro. It's just contrived shit like this that made me stop buying Sonic comics. If the heroes weren't even gonna know loss and just not lose anyone (except Tommy the fucking Turtle) then what's the point in keeping the read going? At least in the IMDB comics they actually let the characters know horror and get scarred (even though Shadow is still a cuck but I guess no product is ever perfect with Sonic) but Archie Comics made sure that you knew Sonic was the best and can easily beat anyone/anything you throw in front of him. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ All that being said, I wish I had interest in the romance now that I look into it. In Archie pre-SGW, the heroes lost and suffered all the time. Some examples, Sonic got beaten to a pulp by Eggman in issue 175, in issue 188, Mogul gets away with having Sonic kidnapped and humiliated, Fiona cheated on him because he was “too much of a goody-goody”, and Sally dumped him for refusing to quit being a hero.

I had a similar problem with The Silver Saga. It was one of the best series of issues to come out of Archie but the end is meh. Silver has the bright idea to throw attacks back at Enerjak which was working. But the thing is Enerjak all of a sudden acts like he cant move now and wasnt acting as intelligent as before lmao. The nail in the coffin is the Sword of Acorns that Julie Su (?) uses against him and automatically wins.. Like what? All that time Enerjak conquered and all it took was a mere stab? It should have been the Sword can damage a Super Form but not a one hit kill. Silvers performance was great seeing how powerful he can be lifting entire skyscrapers. But the thing is he really should have lost quickly once Enerjak got serious (He was holding back the whole time). It should have taught Silver that playing Time Hall Monitor isnt always a good idea as Enerjak One hit K.O's him. Enerjak has faced stronger opponents before, why would Silver fair any better? Silver could have learned from this experience and grew more.

Honestly I loved the Silver Saga. Seeing Enerjak actually defeated the ever so invincible Sonic and made him a meat puppet in his cave was one of the most badass panels in all of Sonic Archie Comics. The ending was all ass but I blame that creepy fuck Ken with his echidna worship making it as bad as it was. I really do love the Archie Comic series and will forever hold it as the comic series for Sonic's high point but when the flaws show up they pull up in squad packs-

First of all, Sonic would never do anything harmful to Tails like that, nor be a jerk to him. He admires his support and talents, and the fact that they're both very special to each other. Second, this does not sound like that Tails we represent at all. I know this is just a comic book and he witnessed that Sonic took away his supposed true love and his tension between him increased. But when I think of Tails, I think of him as a humble, innocent, and caring friend of Sonic's. And he's a kid, despite how high his IQ is.

I think the issue where Sally breaks up with Sonic was my first comic issue ever. It had Sally on the cover and she was alone and crying. I stayed with it for at least another 100 issues but I never liked the Sonic X comics that eventually ran at the same time. I loved how they made Scourge stand out looks wise!
