My best friend and I fell in love with AFL in the mid 90s when we were like 14yo. It kills me we didn't get an AFL team. We grew up in the Bay Area and if the Crocs had succeeded, I dream a bay area team would have been the natural expansion rival. Instead, I’ve loved and suffered for about 30 years as a Roos fan. Pain is love apparently. Additionally, I remember the US going Australia mad in the late 80s-early 99s. It was wild. You were all of a sudden able to sell anything if it had a koala or kangaroo on the package. No joke.

Hilarious. Probably have more billionaires there than any place else. Maybe there's a connection?!

I've hard of it. But was never going to happen. Someone just came up with a pie in the sky idea for the future. Lasted as a headline for a day or two. It was all about in 20 years time... a glimpse into the future and how the AFL could grow. But no one ever took the idea seriously. More of a bad news day, so it got a headline.

Yeh I thought that might be more the case... Its a pretty absurd idea

One thing that stands out when looking at ideas like this with places like New Zealand, Newcastle and the Northern Territory is we often say that it could happen but wouldn't work now because there isn't quite enough money/not quite enough supporters. Surely another competition that would be played in a more condensed time frame, similar to a World Cup, could be an option as it wouldn't need the financial backing required to play in the AFL. Just like how Ireland couldn't field a team in the AFL because of the distance/finances but play Australia in the International cup without issue. All the places that can't quite have an AFL team such as the NT get to have a team represent their area on a big stage. NT, Riverina, Ireland, New Zealand, PNG, New England/Newcastle, Canberra, USA play a group stage then knock out games for the International Premiership. The AFL is wanting more content and people are desperate to see NT have a team, could be an option. Unfortunately the AFL isn't the most creative competition and if anything go out of their way to remove ideas they previously invented eg. State of origin and the indigenous Allstars matches.

Of course, a "Week Zero" like the NRL's Las Vegas lark might not have been a bad idea. Maybe some team would have been assigned as the Los Angeles "home team" the way GWS is in Canberra or Norths or Hawthorn are in Tazzie. But we'll never know.

The LA Team would not have been able to get millions of Taxpayer dollars off the Government like they have here in Australia. That is what makes a team from overseas riskier than what it is here in AUS. Imagine how much more money the NSW and QLD teams would have cost the AFL if the AFL had to pay for all their facilities and Stadiums.
