To be clear, it is illegal to park your vehicle overnight and sleeping in it outside of organised camp grounds. Wild-camping is allowed provided you are further away than a reasonable distance from any city, town, farm or other inhabited place. It must be on uncultivated land and not fenced in. And just to be clear, that applies only to traditional tents, if you are sleeping in a car, SUV or any motorised vehicle, or in a trailer being pulled by a motor vehicle then you must always use an organised camping area. My advice to anyone who is going to travel here on a budget and is renting a car to do so, bring a good tent with you, buy the camping card and organise your route with the campsites that are included in that in mind. For showers and keeping clean, visit the municipal pools which are in most small towns at the end of the day. Taking a dip in the pool and relaxing in a hot tub is a great way to unwind after a long day behind the wheel. Also helps in keeping clean. Sure the geothermal hot tubs out in nature are great and exotic, but the swimming pools are in almost every town, are relatively cheap and very easy to get to. Also you will interact with locals almost every time congregating in the hot tubs, so it can be a good place to get any advice on your route. The supermarkets are plentiful in the capital area but can be few and far between in the countryside. That does not mean that there aren't relatively cheap options out there. Bónus, Krónan and sometimes Nettó are the affordable options, but lacking those, Hagkaup can sometimes be a cheap option, but that is also likely located in the same area as the budget options. If all those are lacking, check out a phrase "Kjörbúð" or "Krambúð". Usually a small locally run store that provides small items and food for the small community. Think "General Store" in the US. Often a fair bit more expensive than the budget supermarkets, but if the choice is between a Kjörbúð or a local expensive restaurant, then the choice is obvious. In short, the least expensive way to travel Iceland in a rented car is: Bring a good tent, most likely you will sleep better than being crunched up in the seat of a car Stay in organised campsites via the Camping Card Use the local swimming pools to keep clean and unwind Stock up in the cheaper supermarkets

So touching! It's rare when you can see actual bedget travelers on youtube. I spent all my student years traveling with almost no money and treating myself in the grocery stores. It's absolutely fine if you go for a day or two

Bónus is NOT cheap, it is simply the 'most affordable grocery store'. Well put! The good news (for us Icelanders, anyway) is the fact that the wages are on par with the prices of goods. It is the exchange rate that screws up the budget of people used to cheap stuff everywhere. Now, the car you ended up with is DEFINITELY not fit to sleep 3, EVEN if we are talking young, supple individuals that can take incredible abuse for a while. I am glad you appear to have ended up enjoying the pleasant bits more than the miserable bits, but that is the privilege of youth! I have made quite a few miserable trips, but in hindsight all I can recall are the good parts of each trip. One such memory is being stuck in Goose Bay in Canuck-land in December 1981, ferrying a new airplane home. Having a flat tire (due to the cold, -28°C, blowing 30 knots) was miserable, but the memories that stick with me are the nice ones, the pleasant people at the hotel and the even nicer aircraft mechanics that fixed our flat tire AND made sure to prevent our demise by fixing a known crankcase breather tube problem that THEY knew about but we puny Icelanders had no idea about. You see, we Icelanders might be used to a cold climate, but ours is rarely colder than -5°C, in rare cases -10°C for a day or two. We are sissies compared to you Canucks!

Great video Noah. I remember watching your videos years ago before going away travelling myself! 3 years later i'm still away. Albeit most of the time in Aus. I'm very glad to see you are still making videos and am quite bewildered why not so many people are watching them now?! You have always been a great creator of content. Glad I remembered your name and searched and to see that you are still uploading. Keep going bro. All the best. :D

Wow Noah what an adventure! Just imagine what explorers like Ernest Shackleton, Lewis & Clark, Samuel de Champlain, Lady Jane Franklin, Robert Bylot and many others who lived through their adventures all without a Bonus store in sight for thousands of miles lol. You will remember those times and many more throughout your life (especially the Icelandic road side grizzly bear experience) just like I do when it comes to my past Antarctica adventures... thanks for sharing the fun video!

I mean whatever works I guess lol. I was going to say I don't know if I could do the same thing but then you asked what our most memorable trip was and once I thought of it, it was in the same boat in a way. It was a week trip with the Boy Scouts in the Florida Keys on a deserted island. We had to pay for the experience but we slept in tents on the island, no showers and just holes for toilets and the ocean being our way to clean ourselves daily. We had some food but we did a lot of fishing and ate that, including fishing for sharks at night while we were standing in the water. (smaller sharks that is not the big scary ones). But my favorite part was the last night the tent smelled so bad I couldn't sleep so I went out to the water and slept on the sand right by the waves with nothing more then a blanket. I fell asleep looking up at the thousands of stars and even saw a few shooting stars. I would do it again in a heartbeat even if it wasn't the most comfortable experience.
