I don't quite disagree with most of your specific critiques yet I still came away with feeling good about it. I'd classify myself as a casual Dylan fan, so that might be a part of it. There were 3 big themes/vibes that I latched onto and liked in the movie 1) it felt like there was almost more of an emphasis on what Dylan meant to people, and how he fits into the cultural/historical context of the 60s as opposed to his actual life and that's kinda more interesting to me. For example, personally I don't care if the Cuban missile crisis sequence was made up, I'd never felt the on the ground vibe of that moment of fear in quite the way I did in this movie. That paired with Dylan seeming borderline checked out from his surroundings but then just showing up with the perfect song for the moment was an interesting dichotomy to me, which leads me to... 2) I just really liked the vibe they went with for Dylan himself, I thought tim and the writers did a good job of making portraying him as kinda a self absorbed dick that somehow manages through those very traits to be both obnoxious and the coolest guy in the room. Just trying to figure out if I liked him or not kept me watching 3) I really enjoy the Pete seeger/Dylan dynamic as a metaphor for the tension between artistic freedom and being a man of the people/voice of a generation. The drama around Dylan going electric did feel exaggerated, but I was down with it cause of how it worked with that bigger tension between being who people want you to be, and potentially serving something bigger than yourself in a meaningful way, and being true to your instincts and desires as an artist. Like sure Dylan stayed political as his career went on, but in my opinion things also got a lot more abstract and opaque. You could picture a thousand people singing times they are a changing, or Maggie's farm at a march, but that ain't gonna happen with lily, rosemary and the jack of hearts (which is still one of my favorite Dylan songs). And I do see a meaningful spirit in folk music of anyone and everyone having their voice, "if you want to sing out sing out", and in that kind of atmosphere Dylan is more of a first among equals, as opposed to the more alienated pedestal of rockstardom, the independent genius. Historically accurate or not, I found something meaningful in this tension

I'm a pretty big Dylan fan myself, and my concern going into the movie was that it would mythologize, rather than portray Bob Dylan and the events it was depicting. I walked out very pleased, nothing felt as egregious or false as, say, Bohemian Rhapsody making Freddy Mercury's AIDS diagnoses a driving force for the performance at LIVE AID. I primarily enjoyed the movie because it played so much of the music, including songs like Masters of War/Song for Woody, which aren't SUPER famous like Times are a Changing, Don't Think Twice, Like a Rolling Stone etc. Fantano's take away is "This isn't a movie for music fans, or Dylan fans" My take away was the complete opposite LOL I think the people inclined to enjoy the film will be those familiar with the music. Like the tone of the film really carried it for me; As well as, as you said, the sense that the film was actually about the people in Dylan's life and how they felt, rather than it being about what was Dylan himself thinking or feeling. I find it a little weird that Fantano is like "None of the songs add to the narrative" "Also why is he playing Don't Think Twice it's Alright when his girlfriend is leaving and the relationship is deteriorating". I walked out of the movie with the sense that it did a good job showing that Dylan was a bit of an aloof, self-involved ass-hole and it showed more how that effected the people in his life and those individual relationships. I think trying to get too "into Bob's head" would have actually worked towards the unrealistic mythologizing of the man. Also the final scene does show that a lot of the crowd were unhappy with the new music style, lots of others were SUPER into it. Also, I thought it actually did a good job showing that somebody like Seager was really displeased with him bringing the electric style into folk (and they had a falling out for a handful of years); Woody Guthrie was portrayed as having no such misgivings, hence the final scene in the film. And plays into what you said about it being representative of the overall dynamics at play within that music scene at the time. I agree that the scene on Pete Seager's TV show was DEFINITLEY a bit much, in terms of inaccuracy, but things like the Cuban missile Crisis scene, or Chalamet going a bit too heavy into Dylan's voice/enunciation (which was unique, and not dissimilar to his singing voice!), to be full nit-picks. I also didn't get any sense that the film portrayed the folk music scene as being "stuck in the past/a cultural dead-end" as Fantano seemed to get from the film. Also his assertion that the musical performances in the film were "just okay" is wild.. I get the sense he walked into the movie wanting to be cynical, and ran with it Lol

I say this as a huge bob dylan fan. He was indeed an anti-social weirdo. Dude stole a collection of folk albums from a friend in Minneapolis. Dude stole a Dave Von Rank song and recorded it without permission. Dude crossed the country and showed up at Woodie Guthrie's family home uninvited lmao. (I haven't seen the movie yet) but a portrayal of him as acerbic and self interested with his artistic ambition is entirely accurate. but you're right if he's never jokey it would be odd. I just wanted to say that there is indeed that side of him that continues to this day. And it was a little unclear what part of it you were saying was fabricated, but Bob Dylan did indeed visit Guthrie at Greystone Park Psychiatric hospital (at least to attestations)

Dude, you’re now scolding director for not making up facts about Dylan’s life, his conversations with others and his feelings, but showing them as the world knows him, seriously? You, as an admirer of Dylan, should know perfectly well that he does not comment on his personal life, his feelings. So how was the director supposed to show Dylan in the film and not distort his identity, but at the same time give the fans new facts about their idol? Also applies to historical inaccuracies. It doesn’t matter in which city Dylan did another scene if the point is that Dylan can afford it. It’s not just a biography of the person, it’s a film about music and its creator, his work. But some of you will want a complete biography and psychological analysis with all the causal connections. You’re asking the film to answer questions that Dylan’s contemporaries, journalists, friends and fans have not answered in his long career.

One of your worst takes. The story / narrative weakness crtique has some merit. But it was never intended to be a deep dive exploration on the man like many biopics are. He was supposed to remain "a complete unknown." Also, the musical performances were fantastic. Chalamet and Barbaro killed it as Dylan and Baez. Norton as Seeger, too.

brother, this take really comes across as "ha they think they can make a dramatic retelling of Bob Dylan's life? then I must nitpick every inaccuracy that isn't 100% true to life." It is a biopic after all - not a documentary. And the music didn't feel shoe-horned in at all. Masters of War during the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis being used to introduce Joan Baez and Dylan's relationship in an emotionally tumultuous time. Girl from the North Country referenced by Sylvie to bring up relationship issues. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall sang in a tongue-in-cheek way when Dylan knows there will be public backlash for his actions. The Time's They Are A-Changin' at the Newport Folk Festival clearly alluding to the slow decline in popularity for folk music. Song to Woody where he literally sings to Woody Guthrie, his hero, even if it's a fictionalized scene. all these references feel very blatant - not forced - but very intentional. And the switch to electric guitar was HUGE in the day. I got to see the movie with my dad who was alive at the time, and that switch to electric was a massive moment in music history that was still discussed for decades. What better way to illustrate that then at the Newport Folk Festival where it clearly contrasts his first performance there? I'm a casual Bob Dylan enjoyer and certainly not a movie buff and I'm not saying this movie is a 10/10 knock your socks off flick, but all in all I think it was a very entertaining and moving film. This review feels like you went into it prioritizing a search for reasons to critique it (obviously, cause you're a music critic) rather than approaching it as a movie trying to convey a message. still like you tho, melonhead :)

Bob's entire portayal in the film sounds like what you would get when you let the artist themselves decide how they should be portayed. They turn to look at themselves more like a caricature or a trope than a real person. Bob probably viewed the interviews and clips of himself you showed us as "Oh no, I'm goofy. I'm such a dork, don't depict me like THAT." which is a shame cause Timothy would've absolutely nailed the open happy Dylan. Dylan personally oversaw and approved EVERYTHING in this biopic.

I should also remind you Bob Dylan's performance style is not attractive to mass public taste and he has tons of quirks that can easily fall into clowny caricture if not played correctly that only requires a dedicated A LIST actor to do him justice. You just want the filmmakers to miraculously find a prodigy actor who has similar look and height to Dylan and can live up to this demanding task both in terms of music performance and character portrayl and somehow he hasn't made his name as A Lister or even D lister. I don't think you fully saw the last performance correctly and, don't get me wrong I needed a second viewing to actually see it myself, but they don't portray it as everyone hates it. Look at the crowd during those scenes. A lot of people are clapping and cheering. the movie just bumps the hatred of the performance to a 10. Which in my honest opinion is a great narrative piece, because if I'm playing that concert I'm not going to notice the good only the people yelling at me and throwing things at me. He has his own thoughts and ideals in the movie it even says outright he's contrarian, you just apparently refuse to accept it or are to blind to see it happening in front of your eyes(he is, also he is really an ass in real life, if you just have eyes to see it. Not everyone you think is all mighty and a perfect hero actually is.)The two scenes that you mentioned that you don't like also makes a bit of no since to me cause you're watching a movie. Him not being on rainbow quest and not meeting Pete in the exact little way that you remember it happened in real life doesn't really matter it's a dramatization not a beat to beat of his life. If you wanted that go watch a documentary. I'm sure you barley knew how the two met until you had to look it up before making this video even then you didn't say how it happened. Another thing that strikes me odd is you keep giving examples of small tidbits such as one person calling him Judas at a concert as data that any Dylan head would know, which feels just as bad faith. Also there are a lot more examples of how Bob Dylan of being an ashole and mysterious type of character even in the interviews that you show in your review itself. They also do show his girlfriend being the one to push him to write songs about the world around him which feels like another bad faith argument because we both know if you rewatch the movie you will only see two scenes of him watching TV, with him not being on it. One being exposition for telling the audience that the Cuban missile crisis is happening the other is him yelling at the tv about the broadcaster trying to put johnny cash in a box. This video just feels like you saw a watch mojo vid on what the movie got wrong and went with that to explain your old head knowledge on how the movie is so flawed that no person who knows Dylan would see that movie would hate it on site. Just go watch a documentary if you want facts about his life, cause that feels like what you wanted his background wasn't that interesting there's a reason why he's told so many different stories about how he grew up. Everybody wants a story, except for the story that's actually true he was a normal kid. (Also the accent isn't as "atrocious" as your putting it up to be listen to the clips of him talking back to back again and you can see it's just a big dramatization of his actual voice).

This was actually my favorite movie that I saw in 2024. Granted I didn't see many of them. But it's unique in terms of being a musical biopic that I would gladly watch again. I also went into this knowing absolutely nothing about Dylan. I'm a fan of folk/folk rock and the general sound of the genre, but I've always enjoyed listening to the people he inspired more than Dylan himself. I really liked the music in the film, and since I knew nothing about him, I viewed him more as a film protagonist than a real figure. That said, I think the reason I liked it so much is because it focused less on telling a comprehensive story of Dylan's life and more on telling a story with Bob Dylan as the hero. The story it was telling was a story of a man who was endlessly creative and fiercely independent, clashing with people that didn't want him to change, kind of crashing out, but being ultimately rewarded for staying true to himself. As a narrative, it was immensely satisfying in my opinion. But if you were looking for a more comprehensive look at Dylan's life, then I can imagine being disappointed, especially if you're a big fan of his.

The movie wasn't supposed to be super deep and moving with a perfect narrative. Yes, it is a biopic and it is a movie and it should have narrative, and I think it does. This movie does a great job at developing the social and political scene at the time, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the movies timeline. The one complaint I actually agree with is your argument about his sense of humor and general likability being absent from the film. While it’s represented somewhat, it does seem to be ignored. But the rest of your points I kind of just flat out disagree with. I think the inaccuracies in a way is what makes this film special, and also thematically resonant. This film is Dylan’s mythos, his folk tale. And I do believe the choices of songs at specific times in the film do advance that folk story quite a bit as well.

First off, this movie is one of my favorite movies in recent years. My brother and I watched, never really listening to bob dylan or knowing who he was but it inspired us to listen to his music. Also, some of your analysis is just not quite right, your point on the rainbow room artist being made up is not right. It's referencing Blind Willie Mctell who Bob Dylan never actually met but clearly admired since he wrote a song about him. You seem to be missing the point of the more subtle themes and scenes. Also, the musical performances were honestly remarkable, with some of them being just as good as the original (or even better in some cases). Final point, this is a movie for entertainment that is not a documentary and isn't meant to just tell historical events. Bob Dylan had the final say on the script and he clearly enjoyed the representation. Think you may be missing that.
