From what I've heard and read, the reason San Marino seems so strange, other than the size is that it existed through most of European history without really taking part in it. It saw all the major movements and adopted many things such as art, science and modern institutions but it experienced none of it's traumas. It was never bombed, invaded, it had no ethnic cleansing or revolutions. San Marino basically just kept to itself, content to be ignored by the world, slowly building up a tiny country that mixes everything from the roman empire to the 21st century all the while it avoided the various twists and turns of the regions history.
@HalfAsleepChris5 жыл бұрын
I never realised that but that makes a lot of sense and explains a lot. It's got a really timeless feel to it, yet is surprisingly modern in many other ways
@PaoloBelloli5 жыл бұрын
@@HalfAsleepChris Hi Chris :) Mussolini, the Italian fascist dictator, once said to the citizens of San Marino: 'You will be surrounded by flames but you will not burn'. He was reassuring them about the consequences of WWII. However, San Marino had their own small Fascist Party, very similar to the Italian one.
@barvdw5 жыл бұрын
@@PaoloBelloli Wasn't it Garibaldi that, after being allowed asylum in San Marino, allowed the Republic to choose their own destiny out of gratitude? It could have easily been gobbled up by the Italian Kingdom, as virtually all of Italy was, but Garibaldi kept his promise and allowed them their independence. Even so, San Marinese history is closely intertwined with their neighbours, of course. There was a story that San Marino was still technically at war with some states long after the war had ended, but that seems to be debated whether it was actually true (like the war wit Sweden that supposedly never ended because San Marino didn't show up to sign the treaty of Westphalia...)

I've been to San Marino and appreciate your accurate depiction of it. The city's layout and architecture are something out of a medieval fairy tale. I remember walking/climbing up the main street that spirals upwards until you run out of mountain to climb, before reaching the stone path that takes you to the 3 towers. I'm from Australia and was going through that country with an organised tour group. I can say it is a HUGE sparkling gem on the crown that is the European continent. Why San Marino isn't more widely known or heavily promoted in the tour guides is a mystery to me. I loved it there and would definitely go back.

When we were in Italy, on the west coast, near Pisa (near is stretch. More like 1.3 hours outside Pisa), we decided to take extra 3 days and spend them in San Marino. When we went from the east coast, we stopped in Florence. That was an amazing city with beautiful buildings. Then we ate lunch and spent the rest of the day in the car on some smal mountain road. But we managed to get there in time for seeing Germany beat us in the world cup. Then we went to Rimini the next day. After that we went to the towers and bought souvenirs until what felt like all of the worlds oceans got turned into a bomb that was dropped over there. It was lovely, even if we were soaked in San Marino. I saw plenty of those fake guns you mentioned.
