Castle won't last long? Here is a tip! Make the next castle out of wood, make (same sized ofcourse) cartboard panels and stick them against the wood with doublesided velcro. Now your buddy Ralph can scratch away and you can easily replace a panel if it has battle damage!

Stray cats usually hiss because they see people as threats. Domestic cats are usually nice or shy. Just don't be mean to a cat and they won't hiss.

Cats don't hiss unless you give them a reason to. The fact that you are scared when they do means it is an effective deterrent to disliked or scary behavior :) Very seldom will a cat actually bite or scratch you without a LOT of warning. Cats are the best.

Cats more or less automatically respect you for being bigger than they are unlike dogs which will start off contending to be alpha. I think it's part of the reason why cats hide their poop in a box of litter you provide. You have to take it slow with cats. Even if they don't seem aggressive (hissing, etc), they will probably be scared of you for a while. They also don't take any sort of punishment well. The only way to stop them from doing something is to convince them of the futility of it. You don't yell at them or nip at them like a dog. You just consistently tell them "No" and pick them off the counter and eventually they'll learn what "No" means and if you catch them there they'll hop down themselves and probably won't do things they know they're not allowed to do as often as they'd like. They're actually extremely loyal and gentle creatures.

We rescued a badly abused cat and we didn't see her for over five months. We got glimpses of her under the table, and she would eat, and use the litter box. She was terrified of people - hissed all the time. She only wanted to hang with our other two cats. One day Dusty came over, sat down, and became a total cuddle-bug. Find the right cat - you'll have a cuddle-bug, too. Cats are the best.
