One of the most enticing things about the EV revolution is all these new small manufacturers that are showing up now. It's just so much easier to put together a working vehicle using electric solutions, and they're so much more flexible than an ICE in terms of how the drive-train is constructed. And it's not just the wider selection of cars - but vehicles in general. Microcars, e-tuktuks, e-bikes and trikes - vehicles that aren't designed for broad appeal, but to satisfy an existing niche that ICE vehicles simply can't, because they have to appeal to the broadest possible demographic to justify a production run. It's a very exciting time for things on wheels.

Indeed, the low cost of entry mean more artisan and specialist automakers will come to the market. Even CATL seem to recognise this bring a full BEV platform to the market to reduce the R&D investment cost, seems coachmaking may be making a come back.

I would be VERY impressed if Jack, or anyone else for that matter, managed to roll the electric Burton going forward. The Citroen 2CV was notorious for being nearly impossible to roll at least when going forward. I remember one KZbinr actually fitted a 2CV with a roll bar and tried to tip it over. After trying everything he could, he found that the only way to pull it off is to go in reverse. I don't think Jack will have to worry about his head in this car.

@ I've been a fan of the original Burton for years, so no need to tell me. I'd still fit it with a roll hoop though. There's something to be said about a small, slow, inexpensive sports car in general. This concept should make a comeback. The last Western take on it was arguably the Smart Roadster. The Japanese have made a few Kei Cars in this vein since, like the Daihatsu Copen and Honda S660, although they sadly rarely leave their home country.

@@no1DdC I agree. I've been fascinated by the 2CV for decades, I'd probably have one but I live in the middle of the United States, and I've heard that a lot of the fun of driving one is that you can drive it flat out without being pulled over.

Great video! All i can say he's totally right. Lots of comfort, steering pleasure and good useability. And it cannot rust (the best when you love classic cars..) I drive a petrol Burton myself with a similar low windshield and I can admit that with the lower bench its no problem at all to drive long distances. For example, I drove to the Alp 'd Huez in France from Utrecht in the Netherlands just a few weeks ago (in the snow/rain and with -3 degrees) 2500km in total of 4 days. I'm 1,86m long and I look trough the windshield instead of over the windshield. There are plenty of options for the petrol version already, higher windscreen, softtop, hardtop, tonneau and a huge lugage space. So its more useable than it looks. I do own several 2CV's but the Burton is the most fun to drive by far. Less than 500kg, plastic body, reliable engine. Just great fun. Cannot wait to drive the electric one as well!

Front end geometry is known for its intricate solution(-s) even to well respected tech guys in F1 and is actually compared to one of the 2023 teams front end design in a positive way... Citroën knew what they were doing. The camber (and caster) angels making the car almost self steering but still extremely stable at speed. On gravel roads my 2CV was particularly fun to drive as you could throw the car into a corner and let it begin to slide slightly in the front and then let of the throttle for a split second to let the rear come out and the steering telling you to straighten it up to keep the slide going through the corner. But the 2CV6 was also a delight to drive on motorways above 70 mph. Those were the days... Thank you for this lovely video!

I am a bit surprised by this being called a new car. The first i heard about the Burton electric was in 2011 as an option from Burton them self (they are in Zutphen in the Netherlands by the way). Now i have looked it up and as it turns out 2CV Mehari Club Cassis has bought Burton in 2022 but have let them largely operate independently. So i guess the only "real" innovation here is that in stead of it being a kit car based on a 2CV chassis its is (going to be) a production car based on a kit car based on a 2CV. I do like the whole idea of it all. We actually had the 2CV from my in-laws as a wedding car.

@JillesvanGurp8 күн бұрын
True, it's a lot easier to retrofit just about anything with wheels with batteries and an electric motor than it is to retrofit them with a modern petrol engine and all the crap that comes with that. Electrical engines are a lot smaller. You could probably take any horse and carriage from the nineteenth century, electrify it and get rid of the horse. It would be weird. But it would work. The point is that car manufacturers are all stuck making the same boring, bland looking cars. It's hard to tell them apart. To paraphrase doc Brown: if you're gonna put an electrical motor in a car, why not do it with some style? (about his choice for the DeLorean). Bosch has an electrical DeLorean on display here in Berlin (or had) in their office near Tempelhofer Hafen. Great example of a stylish car that people would buy (100% guaranteed) that would work extremely well in an EV version if the price was right. All that requires is whomever owns the designs for that unplugging their heads from their arse. Why is that not a thing?!
@amaslam1118 күн бұрын
Already happening in parts of Africa where they're retrofitting Chinese packs into cars and motorcycles. I've seen an example where a W124 Mercedes sedan was retrofitted.
@morosis828 күн бұрын
I was thinking about this the other day, it sounds expensive to replace an engine with a motor and battery for $15k, but versus the cost of a new vehicle it's relatively cheap. If you already have an older vehicle that's in good shape apart from the engine, especially with the durability of older cars vs newer ones, it actually sounds like a decent idea to me. I've been wanting to buy a modern EV, but I think actually I want to see if I can find something older that's interesting and convert it instead - add some mod cons like a modern dash, but otherwise enjoy the older design.
@JillesvanGurp7 күн бұрын
@ 15K would be a lot of battery. The going rate for batteries is trending to below100$ per kwh if you buy in volume and are friendly with the manufacturer. 15K translates a5 50$ translates into about 150kwh. Most older lighter cars can do with a lot less than that. 24 or 42 is quite popular and will get you quite a bit of range with a small/light car. That's why China has a lot of small EVs well below 10K. Some below 5K even. There's battery over production currently so there are a lot of good battery deals to be had for car manufacturers.
@morosis827 күн бұрын
@@JillesvanGurp one would assume development of a kit of some kind would require payback plus profit for the ones doing a conversion. Including motor, battery, control systems, labour, profit I can't see it getting much cheaper than that for quite some time.
