The Titans in Greece tend to be seen as either monsters or a stepping stone for the grander Olympians. This video briefly explores the Titans' history, story and their place in Mythology, to see if there is more to them than simply monster or stepping stone.

To me, the titans represent the concepts that were key to the survival of our hunter gatherer ancestors. Time, memory, the motion of the stars, seasons would all be very important to people who lived or died by what the were able to find… where as The olympians supplanted the titans at the dawn of civilization where crafting, warfare, hospitality, law, metallurgy, agriculture, marriage, and hierarchy were important to maintain a large settled society.

I mean, we've also basically turned Hades into Satan for no apparent reason other than he rules the underworld so it's not really surprising that the Titans got a similar treatment.

Well, the great flood is technically one of them! For a very long time, most people thought the flood story in the bible wasn't as big as it was suggested. But more and more cultures told the story of a flood, Gilgamesh, The Bantu's the Greeks, the Cherokees and even the Aborigines from Australia, all had different versions of a Great Flood story. So suddenly it was suggested that the flood did happen, as it was described in the bible :) Some mythologists/historians believe in the 'Monomyth' concept. The idea that there is 'One true myth'. This can be seen in two ways, either that all cultures inherently think the same, and so they create the same ideas, or two, there is a single story which was spread and told over and over, folding itself into the many different cultures across the world. I always prefer the second theory ^_^

In my Buganda culture or tradition our chief God Mukasa Mukasa w'ennyanja was similar to chief God Zeus who took the Heavens or the upper air when this world was divided among the three gods. Because the word Mukasa w'ennyanja means Lord of the lakes, seas or oceans where the air we breath originates because in the beginning or genesis when God created this universe the power of God or the Spirit of God or the wind from God was moving over the waters and God used that wind or air to create man in his image after his likeness when God breathed life giving breath into his nostrils and the man became a living soul or Spirit means wind and I think was the reason why Jesus said that when he goes to Heaven he will ask his father in Heaven to send us the helper or the Spirit that reveals the truth about God in Heaven because the Spirit of God is all about wind

And Mukasa w'ennyanja being God of air or wind which comes from the lakes or oceans or seas was the reason why Mukasa was known as w'Ennyanja because when God created this universe the wind from God was moving over the waters and God used that wind or Spirit or air to create man in his image after his likeness and also used the same air God breathed into the nostrils of man and became a living soul and for me think that was the promise Jesus gave man when he said that when he goes to Heaven he will ask his father in Heaven to send us the helper or the Spirit that reveals the truth about God because God himself according to John the Baptist is a Spirit or wind!

How is the creation of Eros as a primordial being even relevant with such humanlike features without a single humanoid in sight? Aphrodite and Ares fell in _love_ with each other and conceived a _love child_ named Eros.
@AbsurdandFantastical
@AbsurdandFantastical 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information! This source was taken from the Hesiod Theogony, which, I felt, gave the best representation for the Titans. In the Theogony Eros was needed for Gaia and Ouranos to lust after one another, and so create the rest of creation. Without Eros, there could be no desire, and so no copulation and so no birth. Here is a link to more information on Eros. In the second paragraph, it discusses Hesiod's version of Eros. greekgodsandgoddesses.net/gods/eros/#:~:text=In%20the%20primordial%20myths%2C%20according,which%20the%20universe%20was%20born.

@@AbsurdandFantastical I'll read into it but I was thought Ouranos came from Gaia as a response, therefore embodying the Sky, making him the offspring of Gaia? Never was there a concept in my mind of lust between the two, rather a natural occurrence of event.
@AbsurdandFantastical
@AbsurdandFantastical 3 жыл бұрын
@@JohannesVanDerStuyvebode Yes! You're absolutely right! The stories do say that Ouranos broke away from Gaia - sky split from the earth - a natural occurrence in the ether times. Yet despite being physical embodiments of Sky and Earth, they were still characters. In essence, people, absolutely suffering from human faults and mistakes. Lust, anger, arrogance, etc. As much as the creation story is about creation, the growing of mountains the first rainstorm, they are still the personification of humanity - because, after all, it is their story :)

It's true! I would prefer to be in the Titans world rather than the Olympians. But at the exact same time, the Olympian generation were more innovative - which is were the fire of Prometheus came from. It does ring a little like the Garden of Eden? You frolicked and enjoyed life, and then the fall came and then you were cast out and you had to fend for yourself - but they ate the apple which gave them the ability to perceive. I just find parallels very interesting, even the African Mythologies have a sort of fall and then rise from the ashes sort of thing. But they are very against creating new things, unless it is given by the gods themselves.
