*Umbrella Academy spoilers* He wanted to forget about all the dead people he saw all the time. His dad locked him in a room all alone for hours (days?) On end to make him "face his fears" where he'd cower in the corner crying and begging to be let out. All that caused Klaus PTSD and depression and all that other jazz, so he got into drugs to push his power down and make it go away so he wouldn't be haunted by dead people anymore.
