The very fact it connected Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka made the Tokaidō Shinkansen massively popular, especially once the original 3 hour 10 minute one-way schedule between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka Stations started in March 1965. It was so popular that soon it made a huge profit for Japan National Railways, more than covering the huge cost overruns of the construction project from 1959 to 1964.

Tokyo - Yokohama - Nagoya - Kyoto - Osaka To operate to so many big cities at such speed and frequency is the most impressive thing in the Train industry ever

I think Tokaido is less interesting because it’s a very fast and very comfortable bus: gets you to your office and back fast. Boring as hell, but that’s exactly the reason why it’s profitable.

The amount of profitability of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen shows in my opinion one of the main limitations of the approach of the Japanese government to split JNR regionally when privatizing it. If there was still only one company responsible for rail service nationally, the huge profits from the Tōkaidō Shinkansen could be re-injected as investment in railways for the whole country, which could compensate losses and provide better support for the infrastructures located in regions such as Hokkaido or Shikoku. This would in turn make these places more attractive and could increase profitability of existing lines. Instead, JR Central can only spend this huge amount of cash in a project such as the Chūō Shinkansen, which is an awesome project don't get me wrong, but I think the construction of a Shikoku Shinkansen line should be a priority over that to better develop the Japanese territory.

Great Video as usual and I must say I do love you accent! It's really funny in a pleasant way! Just one thing, it does not mean anything and it doesn't change the value of the video but in the first map at about 00:55 the Hokkaido Shinkansen is indicated as Hokuriku Shinkansen, again it's nothing but just so you know... Cheers

Thanks for the video! Side question: if Hokkaido Shinkansen has low density, does that mean it's currently operating at a loss? How will the extension to Sapporo improve the density and revenue?
@JPRailcom3 жыл бұрын
Tokyo-Sapporo flight has the biggest market. That is why Hokkaido Shinkansen needs to extend to Sapporo. If the Shinkansen connects Tokyo-Sapporo within 4 hours, the Hokkaido Shinkansen will be very porfitable.

Makes me think that JR Central should lower the prices along the Tokaido line. Maybe they will do that once the Chuo line opens. Hope so!!!

Great video! You said, JR is renting the rails from the government. So is it possible for another business to make a better offer to the government and get to operate on a line instead of JR? Did this ever happen?
@JPRailcom4 жыл бұрын
Under the current law, I think that only JR was allowed to operate the Shinkansen. Also, other companies do not have the know-how to operate high-speed railways.

Before clicking, I knew the reason. Charging as much as 13000 yen to move 500km. Really expensive. Better ride the bus, plane, or Sunrise Express. Shinkansen is made for business passengers.

Haha. You've never taken the night buses in Japan between the major cities. That is something everyone tries once then never again. Unless you like pain. :)

@@ondrejsedlak4935 I already tried the Night bus. I can sleep. I am from Hamamatsu, so I only ever went from Tokyo to Osaka once. I only seldom go to Kanto because I mostly go to Kansai, where in between there are fast rapid services or comfortable Urbanliners. I never used the Nozomi, since it skips my city. If I go to Shizuoka I jus ride Kodama or a Home Liner.
