May I ask how much did you pay for the Shinkansen train tickets from Tokyo to Hokkaido?
Ueno station was the gateway station to tohoku for 100 years. When tohoku Shinkansen opened they didn’t go to Tokyo station but they all started at Ueno. So I found it a bit weird that you started in Ueno and went to Tokyo and then back through Ueno because a lot of tohoku Shinkansen start in Tokyo then make a stop at Ueno before heading out to Ohmiya, Utsunomiya, Fukushima, Sendai, etc.

Shinkansen is very safe because there is an automatic earthquake detection system(called UrEDAS) and obstacle detection system, which automatically stops before the seismic waves reach. They are fully equipped with the whole Shinkansen system, and it is famous that there have been zero deaths since its opening. have a nice trip😊❤

As somebody else commented, Tohoku Shinkansen stops at Ueno Station, so you don't have to spend extra time and money to make a detour and go to Tokyo Station to catch a Tohoku Shinkansen, unless you'd like to enjoy Tokyo Station. There are a lot of shops also in Ueno Station to buy boxed lunch. But, thank you for introducing our Japanese Shinkansen to the world. Tohoku Shinkansen is the fastest, 320km/h. As Hokkaido is so vast, most people living in Hokkaido use cars as in the U.S. to move around. So trains are not usually crowded, and there are few trains to catch in daytime on weekdays except Sapporo and the surrounding areas.

Wow, what a wonderful adventure in Japan! My dream is to visit all 47 prefectures of Japan. Each one has its own number of tourist attractions, as well as a variety of local dishes, all of which are delicious. Of course, wherever you go, you can be safe, clean, and receive the best hospitality. In the summer, however, it seems better to go to the cooler northern regions.😅

@@North-of-the-49th Our plan was to use an eSIM until we got here and realized our phone is too old for that! You can buy SIM cards from vending machines at the airport, but they're also quite pricey. Every Tohoku-Hokkaido Shinkansen train stops at Ueno Station, it's a bit strange to take the extra ride to Tokyo Station via JR Yamanote Line. Of course, Tokyo Station itself is an attractive shopping mall and you can get train bento from almost everywhere in Japan, the only drawback is restaurants in Tokyo Station didn't start service early. At around 7:30-8p.m., I can only buy foods and drinks from supermarket and bento shops. Although it's slower that local flight from Hanada to Hakodate, the 4.5 hours train ride is much more comfortable. The regional JR Pass helps a lot for travel between Hakodate, Aomori, Akita, Morioka, Sendai and Tokyo in 6 continues days. Of course, for longer trip in Hokkaido, it's more reasonable to buy the local train pass for JR Hokkaido only.

Question, what about booking seats? Great vlog and plan to save this for reference. Will try app you referred for tickets. Thank you ❤️
@samuelandaudrey Жыл бұрын
Good question. With our Hokkaido JR Pass we travelled with both reserved seats and unreserved seats. You can reserve a seat right on the JR ticketing machine - we had to get a staff member to help us do so. You can also reserve seats when you pick up your JR Pass at the ticketing office. There was one leg of the journey where all the reserved seats were fully booked, so we just boarded the unreserved carriages and picked a random seat. It can be a bit confusing to navigate the first few times, so whenever we weren't getting it, we approached the staff at the gates and asked for help.

Most foreign tourists tend to travel to the west side of Japan via standard routes such as Mt. Fuji, Nagoya, Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka, but these routes are rather based on Japan's aristocratic culture. In the direction you were heading to the north, those area has been rich in Japanese nature since the ancient times, and there are many authentic Japanese countryside towns.That option for travel looks very smart. The Hokkaido area is very popular with Japanese people, but it's not so crowded except Sapporo. Although it is not as good as Canada, it is rich in nature and the food is probably the best in Japan. The Shinkansen 🚄 you rode on, "Hayabusa" is the fastest bullet train in Japan. Its maximum speed is 320 km/h, and JR East is currently considering improving it with the aim of reaching 400 km/h or more. If you were to go through the Tohoku region by Shinkansen🚄, it might have been a good idea to stop at Sendai and go around there such as Yamagata.

Hi Samuel and Audrey, in regard to Klook and booking the Shinkansen. Does the Klook system have allocated tickets from JR East which in affect guarantees seats when they’re released by JR East one month before travel date? Or, is it the convenience of pre booking ahead with them and doing the simple QR code collection at the station as you showed. They mention a possibility that desired departure time can be changed by them due to availability? We’re trying to book a specific departure time but I’m not sure if that’s guaranteed using Klook? I hope you don’t mind my asking this question. We have so appreciated your Japan series and it’s become an invaluable tool for our travel to Japan in June. Cheers👍
@samuelandaudrey9 ай бұрын
So you have two options with Klook: you can either book tickets from point A to point B at your desired time (that's what we did on the ride from Tokyo to Hakodate), or you can get a JR pass (we used the regional one to travel around Hokkaido). When we were using the pass, we found that sometimes there were no reserved seats available, but we managed to get seats in the unreserved carriage. You'll have to weigh your options depending on the time of year you're travelling and also consider how often you'll be catching trains to see if the pass is worth it.

Yeah, it was super easy! We just booked everything online back in Canada and then picking up the tickets with the QR code was a breeze. Reserving seats on the machine was tricky just as you said - we had to get staff to help us through the process! 😅 With the latest price increase, one way tickets and regional passes are the way to go.
