Enjoy watching the full Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games from July 23rd, 2021! We bring you all the moments, from when Naomi Osaka of Team Japan lit the Olympic cauldron with the Olympic torch to the fireworks going off.
The Tokyo Games were an unprecedented demonstration of unity and solidarity as the world came together for the first time following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic for an Olympic Games focused on the pure essentials: a celebration of athletes and sport.
This sense of solidarity was critical to the success of the Tokyo 2020 Games following their historic one-year postponement, especially in the establishment of the Tokyo 2020 Playbooks-guidelines for safe and secure participation and operations. The Playbooks set a new standard for large-scale sporting events and ensured that everyone from athletes to the media would be able to safely take part in the Games.

Not to mention that Japan was responsible for reviving the game industry after the crash. Games wouldn't be the same without Japan. And media, including games, have really had a big impact on people's lives. Not just for being a part of our childhoods, but for shaping us as people through their wonderful stories and aesops. So I certainly believe that along with the fields of science, industry, technology, and all the myriad of other fields Japan has made significant contributions to - the field of popular culture and entertainment is one that also deserves to be celebrated. Also I literally cried at them playing Frog's theme - Chrono Trigger has to be one the greatest games of all time.

I hope Tokyo and Japan have a second chance to celebrate the Summer Olympic Games, it's a real shame that the pandemic has robbed us of one of the best opening and closing ceremonies of all time, they have it all, ancient culture, music, cinema, animation, art, science, technology, nature, history, it was definitely going to be incredible, what we saw here was not even the shadow of what it would have been.

There was an original plan done by Mikiko Mizuno who directed the Tokyo 2020 presentation at Rio 2016 closing ceremony and she was suppose to direct the opening and closing ceremonies of the Tokyo olympics but she was sidelined by disgusting men at Dentsu. Which caused her team to resign and Japanese people are angry at Dentsu for what they done to Mikiko.

There is a reason why Tokyo has been chosen years before. It is by fate that they have handled the Olympics with great pride and importantly safeguarding all the participants over the pandemic. It is really hard, but we are really proud that they have pulled it through. Understandingly, it is a simple opening ceremony due to the prevalent situation at that time but there has so many great Olympic and Japanese elements that is most important that is driven by ideals and passion that is highlighted not by any grandiose presentation.

Even if this is not the happiest Opening Ceremony, we can say they attempted to bring some joy. And I appreciate that. I'm sure Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, NIER and Chrono Trigger fans (or at least those who enjoy the OST even without knowing about the games) enjoyed the Parade of Nations and could say proudly "we made it to the Olympics".

@@lesliecheung2003 The sad part is that Nintendo was originally going to provide themes for the opening ceremony (Highlighting some from Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Kirby and Pokémon); but due to changes in the organizing committee, this was scrapped. I would show you a video explaining the whole original plan of the opening ceremony (In which, by the way, Shigeru Miyamoto was involved in the original idea), but it's in Spanish and I think it doesn't have subtitles. Edit: That video was deleted...

Idk why, but my most favourite part in this opening ceremony is in 48:50 where the intro video of the athletes parade, it is awesome to see the orchestra peparing to perform, sync with the preparation of athletes for the competition. The fade in between the orchestra and the athletes and the build up music to it is awesome.

I wonder why they didn't introduce the Mario and Sonic at the Olympics series in the opening ceremony... Those two video-game icons sort of brought the Olympic Games to full attention. The characters in the ring as kigurumi would have made it better; I mean, in the London Olympics, they had several characters from iconic British literature (Peter Pan, 101 Dalmatians, Mary Poppins, Alice in Wonderland, and of course the Harry Potter books) by having the antagonists appear as giant puppets.

The overture from Dragon Quest that was played at the beginning of the entrance of the players and the music that was played with the fireworks after everyone's entrance was over are essentially connected. It is a very moving song.

I was really sad when I watch this Opening Ceremony way back in 2021. There is too much expectation for Tokyo to deliver a techy ceremony. But when I watch this again in 2022, I really appreciated the theme, the ceremony gave homage to our front liners and respect to the ones who lost their lives during the pandemic. At the same time, the message of the ceremony not only focused on peace and harmony in this world but also give us hope and reminded us that during difficult times, we should look at and take care of one another.
