One of the major impacts of the raid that is pretty much never mentioned is the fact that the Japanese delayed a scheduled changeover in their Naval codes so as not to disrupt the emergency search for the US carriers that launched the attack. It was during that time when the Japanese continued to use the JN-25b code that the US code breakers famously developed the intelligence that allowed US strategic victory at Coral Sea in early May, AND the intelligence that gave the US advanced knowledge of the Japanese attack at Midway in early June. Had the Japanese gone through with the changeover of their code to the new JN-25c version, US code breakers would have been "blinded" for some weeks or even months while they cracked the new code, and the Battle of the Coral Sea AND the Battle of Midway would almost surely have gone very differently than they did.
