Lol. It is funny because some people might think as soon as they put a product on their dog the dog will magically behave. This video is so very good because it shows you still have to put in the WORK. And I always love a demonstration on how to use the collars correctly. Thanks.

I’ve been using a gentle leader with dogs for years, truly an awesome tool. I just adopted the most fearful dog I’ve ever had, victim of the dog meat trade in Korea. Your videos have proven invaluable to helping me train him. Even his agency is shocked by the amount of progress he’s made in just a few weeks. He went from rushing out the crate, out the door, up and down staircases, pulling on walks, to being better behaved than most dogs my neighbors have had for years. I am so beyond grateful 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

This is a MUST have for pups that are insanely strong and who just do not care or do not respond to other loose leash methods that he teaches. I have tried everything with the corrections, and different types of collars/harnesses and even used the shifting of the hind quarters - and my 11 month old is soooooo strong and stubborn! It is night and day difference with the gentle leader. They do need some work to get used to it though. Mine likes to be super extra dramatic and rolls around in the grass when he first gets it put on if it’s been a while since it has been on.

Thank you for showing dog owners how to help condition a reactive dog to the Gentle Leader. Every video I've come across to get a dog used to a GL shows a very nonreactive, cooperative dog. That's great but my 3 year old mini poodle hates anything new and will run and hide under the sofa or bed if we try to do anything to her (brush her teeth, put medicine in her ear, give her a bath and even putting on a leash or harness for her walks). I have been trying the GL with her for a few days to help go slowly so she doesn't freak out. Thank you for showing us a realistic situation for a first time experience with the GL.

After 14 months of trying to train my German Shepherd to stop losing his mind and going crazy towards other dogs and watching TONS of Upstate Canine Academy and a few Robert Cabral videos for a year and having discovered Joel 2 months ago, I finally had my BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT TODAY. My dog did not even bark at the little white dog he acts like he wants to kill when we walked by his house and he saw him! Why? Because I did not let him FOCUS on the fact that he saw the dog. [EDIT: I typed this before watching the video. I'm using a Martindale/flat collar for everything below]. Now, I have tried this a gazillion times over the last year+ by telling him "heel" when he pulls and barks at another dog. What did I do different? All of a sudden I remembered that Joel will yell out "HEY!!!!" at a dog the INSTANT that the dog puts his focus elsewhere (breaks engagement with him)... so, I put my dog in a heel and walked all over the place making him heel. Now, I have done enough of Joel's reversals with him that he will not walk to the end of the leash and get that "pop", so he has graduated from that level. Let's call that method a "Loose leash tune-up".... So I did something that is the next step up... let's call it a "Heel tune-up"... I'm speaking of the exact same thing Tom Davis of Upstate Canine Academy does with a new-to-him dog, which is doing a bunch of quick 180/u-turns and popping the dog if he doesn't stay with you. Pretty quick the dog will stay with you. Okay, after "tuning him up" with these u-turns and making him heel, I then thought about how the www.NitroCanine.com website (Seattle-area dog-trainer who doesn't use treats) says that engagement is the key to everything.... engagement is your dog being engaged with you, looking at you and caring about where you are and what you want from him. To use Joel's words, engagement is, "WHOA! I better watch this guy! He's crazy! (and I bet he can do this ALL DAY)". :) The NitroK9 guy says that the heel is your engagement and that if the dog is engaged with you he will do what you want, and you can distract and REFOCUS your dog from whatever is making him crazy and focus him on OBEDIENCE TO THE HEEL. So after watching hundreds of dog training videos over this last year, and the HUGE recent blessing of Joel's different no-prong style, my subconscious was putting this all together while I was approaching the house of the little white dog my dog wants to kill and suddenly IT HIT ME... When Joel yells, "HEY!" he is REFOCUSING the dog off of whatever it is wanting to do and onto being engaged with the trainer. It's like, "Hey dog, you are not running the show here. I am the boss, remember? I AM HERE, bitch!" (well, only if it is a female dog). So here is what worked for me: After the u-turn tune ups and a good heel and TONS of praise for a "Good heel and good quiet" I had him in a heel and focused on going forward and looking STRAIGHT AHEAD. Suddenly it hit me.... watch his focus, and the INSTANT he tries to look over to that little dog he hates, yell "HEY! Heel!" like Joel does to refocus him on me + plus the NitroK9 heel requirement (redirect his focus to the obedience). IT WAS MAGIC Do not let your dog even START to take his focus off of going straight ahead. If he does, yell "HEY! HEEL!" If he doesn't comply give him leash correction. My Shepherd is nucking futs and this WORKED. IMPORTANT: You MUST follow Joel's advice to NEVER EVER let your dog run out the door ahead of you. EVER. If your dog thinks he is leading YOU, you have no authority and he doesn't care what you might want. I just realized, last night and today I got wise to my GSD's trick of jumping at the front door woofing to go out (which is how I got tinnitus, BTW)... previously I would always try to get him to sit (he doesn't stay in it), but he would get so urgent that I thought he had to pee or poop NOW... then I remembered Joel saying to never give in to this, so I didn't. THIS SETS THE TONE FOR THE WALK, and likely for the ENTIRE DAY. DO NOT LET THE DOG LEAD YOU or you are DONE. Forget it. PEOPLE: DO NOT BE PERMISSIVE WITH YOUR DOG BECAUSE YOU LOVE HIM AND WANT TO BE NICE. DO NOT LET HIM LEAD OR GET HIS WAY OR ELSE YOU WILL BE THE ONE FOLLOWING! Be nice and love your dog, BUT YOU ARE THE BOSS (like Joel taught me)! THANK YOU JOEL FOR ALL YOUR ADVICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are awesome. You have helped me. Now I'm ready to go into business as an unqualified dog trainer and go broke when I have to give everyone refunds because I have no idea what the hell I'm doing! Seriously though, my GSD is crazy and without you I could not have gotten to this point. Thank you, man. You are helping a lot of people and a lot of dogs with all this crazy valuable FREE content. You are a good dude and you are making a huge difference for far more people (and dogs) than you will ever know. Thank you.

She is a large and lean 80 pound female who is still not done filling out, according to the vet. For awhile, I couldn’t even walk her, my husband had to do it. Through watching all the trainers I could find online, as well as hiring local trainers, we are finally at the place where she RARELY reacts to small dogs. After watching this video coupled with the previous video, I get why she questioned him on the tightness of the gentle leader. In the 1st video, Joel has to really pop the leash to control that dogs strength. She's a mom that doesn't understand her dog needs a little more force because of his strength and is probably afraid to hurt him. She also, doesn't understand how much less force is needed with the gentle leader, really hardly any. I was concerned, myself, when I 1st started using one. But, after using it for just a few minutes, realized it's a complete game changer. I've been working my 2yr old 120lbs Pyrenees female for just a little over a week. She's a stubborn and strong dog, but I can control her easily now. Still have a ways to go with meeting other dogs and people (due to lack of opportunity), but she's well on her way. My 1yr 120lbs Pyrenees male, figured it out so quick that he was off the gentle leader in 1 day and after just over a week, is walking off leash at times. So, I can confirm that this thing works. Best investment I ever made, other than, using Joel's methods.

I'm glad you made this video as my dog Enya keeps fighting it for at least the first half of the walk. It seems I just need to condition her more to it. What's really strange though is she has somehow figured out how to unclip the leash from it. She's done it a few times now and all I can think is happening is that her claw is catching the clip and it, by chance, opens up and releases the loop on the gentle leader. Luckily she has great recall so it hasn't been a major issue but I really hope I can fix it before she unclips herself near a dog. She's not aggressive, but if she runs up like a maniac to another dog she may cause a fight regardless.

Nicole Brumment, with the Halti head collar, you connect in 2 places, the nose clip on the Halti and the dog's own flat collar, using either a double clip training leash or 2 regular leashes. Even if the dog gets out of the head collar you still have him connected to you by his regular flat collar.

I just started this with my dog. He’s doing a good job for today being his 2nd experience with it, but he doesn’t have a good check in with me. He just kinda stops where he is and freezes. He doesn’t pull enough when he’s wearing it to spin him around. But with just a collar or a harness he’s hard to control.

I just ordered one of these for my one and half year old Corgi. He has just begun growling and muscling up to other dogs during our AKC dog events and our dog training sessions at my dog club. I'm hoping this will help him refrain from this behavior. I understand there is a conditioning period with this type of collar and willing to put the work into it. But, I am wondering, does a dog eventually get weaned off from having to use this training collar?

I’ve been using the gl with my golden doodle - he is so much better on walks. But cars driving by creates so much anxiety - he jumps and barks. I was letting him correct himself with the gl as he would lunge. Not sure if that is correct. We’ve tried everything and two trainers. And we live on a busy street with lots of cars on the walk.

It's not too tight... It's something new to him... It's an adjustment period that he has to go through. No he doesn't like it right now but he will adjust. It's better for him to not like this for a few days than for the owner to need a shoulder replacement or elbow surgery because he is strong enough to do that (speaking from experience!!!). It's also 'better for him' to be uncomfortable with it than to end up in a rescue, pound or worse euthanized because you didn't get the problem under control early before someone or another dog got hurt.

GL is absolutely amazing! why do people not use it is beyond me! I have a year old intact male Alaskan Malamute & boy he can pull strong! GL was a game-changer...A couple of things I like to add.. 1. Please take your time to condition well...it took me 7-9 days before Leo could walk straight for 10 mins ...take it slow & easy! Now, Leo loves it..he knows GL with leash means we are going out on walk...I have a cue word "collar" & he puts his nose in the loop 2. Large strong breeds also get a lot of attention & this can be an issue if you have a dog who can easily get excited/happy..I like that people confuse GL with a muzzle, gives me more space & I can concentrate on walking Leo, practice other cues like "leave it" etc..

I was hesitant to use a GL simply because it seems like putting all the pressure on the snout is more painful and damaging than the neck. But after trying EVERYTHING and struggling for yrs I decided to give GL a try and it truly has been a night and day difference! Now someone else in the comments who criticised the use of GLs mentioned that it doesn't really change a dogs behavior it just surpresses the behavior. Since the dog never really changes it makes the use of a GL a lifelong thing in many cases. And they are right about that. That's one reason why I'm glad I recently discovered this channel. I'm hoping by utilizing this guys techniques I can get to the point where I no longer need the GL for my dogs.

Use a prong or a front clip harness. Don't use a gentle leader. They are the meanest thing for any dog. Their nose is the most sensitive part of their body. If you don't believe me look it up. I've met several dogs with permanent damage to the hair/structure of their noses from still pulling with this on.

If your dog is still pulling that hard with a GL, redirect them by walking in the other direction for a few steps then turn back around. It will drive you crazy & the dog (lol) but they'll get get a clue eventually. My 90 lb pittie got a clue took him several months. He graduated to a harness & we both enjoyed our walks & 1 to 2 hour hikes. Good luck. ✌💙🐾

Why the switch? He’s about 1.5 so hoping that’s part of it- staffordshire terrier plot hound mix. Can still be ver stubborn and mouthy, nippy. Would love to hear your thoughts on this - he’s about as big as Blue in this video.

I put it on the first time, and the difficulty was that my dog was too enthusiastic bc she saw a new leash and wanted to start walking as quickly as possible. So she stuck her neck and nose in the thing, but so fast that I mixed it up wrong about five times, it was a mess bc of difficulties to calm her down; when I finally got it right, we just went out and it worked great. I guess I had a "positive" problem. :)

Could you please do more videos on barking? I didn't find many on your channel and I have a dog that constantly barks, either when the others dogs are playing, or if she hears people walking outside, or if she wants attention, and so forth. As an "ex" fan of Zak George, his training sessions for more serious stuff didn't help, and I found your channel which seems to be extremely helpful as you mix positive reinforcement with some "tough love". I really would like to correct my dog's barking as it's so extremely annoying. Thank you so much for your work and for sharing your techniques.

@Chi For the barking at things through the window, I would go to the window, acknowledge to the dog, "I see it" (neighbors, people, dog, car, or whatever). Then say 'thank you, it's OK, quiet'. The dog is alerting you and you need to let him know that you've got this, you're okay with it. The dog has done his job. I praise him first, say thank you. Not my dog, I only have him occasionally for a friend who lives in the country.. At home, he MUST alert his owner, so I didn't want to stop his alerting me or the owner. First time he stayed with me, he went crazy with all the 'city' sounds and happenings outside. Now he isn't too interested. If he barks it's just once and I say thank you, quiet and he is good. It was quite an adjustment for a 6 yr old dog and an old lady who has never owned a dog.

@shirleyens7707

Exactly!!! Kings Mom831. I got a Halti head collar, which I like better. You clip to the nose strap AND the flat collar, so you only use the flat collar as the leash connection. ONLY when the dog lunges or pulls do you tug on the nose to correct him. It simply turns his nose which changes the direction that the dog will go. The Halti video instructs that you need to first let the dog get familiar with it. I let him smell it, nose it, sniff it all over, feel and see that it was lots of straps. I did this several times the first day and only after that did I put it on him. I used the command "get dressed" and then put it on him, using treats. Put one in your hand, say 'get dressed', put your hand through the nose part and pull the hand back slowly to let dog follow the treat and put his nose in to get the treat. Quickly close the collar and praise him. My friend's dog, who I care for occasionally, was a little annoyed with it and pawed it a bit, but in a few minutes accepted it. He is not walked on a leash at home so each time he comes to stay, we do a little review and he is quite happy to wear it. I am not a trainer, but the way that Joel is using the Gentle Leader doesn't make sense. The dog is getting constant pressure on the nose, I think, and that will just confuse him., imho.

@@shirleyens7707 Sounds like you found a tool that works well for you! I like the way you did lots of desensitizing to get your dog used to it and comfortable before expecting him to wear it. I like what you’re doing with your friends dog too! I have a similar desire to always leave an animal or a place better than I found it. Whether it’s a location that needs a bit of tidying up or an animal that could use a little work, I don’t think it hurts to give them a little lesson on boundaries, expectations and some good quality attention!😊

@@KingsMom831 Thank you for your kind words. I was very surprised at how well he was able to learn as a 6 yr old dog, who lives in the country.. He had so many adjustments to make at my house, since I live in the city and there is much more going on and so many new sounds, sights and distractions. Leash training was a necessity as he was such a puller. I thought I might not survive walking him in icy conditions. As someone with no experience with dogs, I felt pretty proud of the progress we made. Joel has many good training lessons, but he seems a bit harsh sometimes. I would sure like to see him smile once in a while and be happy with the dog, when he's doing well. I've watched other trainers and Brandon McMillan comes to mind as always being kind but firm. His training really shows that he loves the dogs. I think dogs respond to your attitude to them and can tell that you care, much like children. lol Joel seems much more Matter-of-fact and seems to look at it as strictly a task that the dog must learn, though the step by step methods that he shares are so helpful. Just my impression and opinion.
