Stop your dog from leash pulling instantly with this inexpensive head collar. We needed a quick fix to our German Shepherd's pulling as it was becoming dangerous for our children to walk him. My trainer recommended a Gentle Leader and we couldn't be happier with the results. Hudson (our 9 month old GSD) went from extreme puller to calm walker instantly! He's a completely different dog when he's wearing this head collar!
Our goal is to eventually train Hudson to walk with us off leash, but this head collar fulfills an immediate need.
Check out our family review of the PetSafe Gentle Leader Head Collar.

Dont use these collars when its hot dogs need to open there mouths to cool off because they dont have sweat glands.

@@John-Anderson it's not a muzzle and the dog's mouth is able to open. The dog can eat, drink and pant. Do some quick research before spreading misinformation. If it's too hot an owner should not be taking their dog out anyway.

Remember to/remind the kids to RELEASE the tension on the leash when Hudson is doing what you want him to do to prevent confusion!! This is awesome, Imso glad it worked for you guys. The gentle leader is a life saver at the shelter I work at.

Saw that immediately. That’s my biggest pet peeve about the head collars, there isn’t an immediate (or any release since this dog hates the muzzle loop, because that’s still pressure) release. It’s so easy for them to end up being a crutch because the dogs confused and the owner doesn’t learn good pressure and release and timing. I think the dog might have been best off with the high collar without the loop on the muzzle.

You can also have a separate harness on along with this harness if they are not pulling, then keep both leashes lose. If the start to pull, keep the leash on the no pull training harness shorter until they stop pulling. As they pull less and less you can take the training harness off and just keep it with you until they are not pulling anymore.

I am 74 and walk and babysit a black lab, greyhound mix who is really strong, yes he doesn't like the gentle leader but it saves my shoulder from pooping out.....so worth every penny. Getting it in him is still a bit of a struggle, he is a very smart dog.

My dog is the same way. He'll do absolutely anything for a treat but once they're gone he's in his own world. And although I've been trying to desensitize him to the gentle leader he still tries to take it off. I'm loving the honesty of this review thank you.

Great honest review. This was pretty much the same thing we found with our 6mo old GSD. She's nearing 60 pounds and pulls like a freight train if left to her own pacing. Gentle leader helps a ton but isn't a cure-all.

My vet recommended it because my dog (beagle/husky) doesn't care about treats and is horrible on a leash. I'm a full grown women and she's managed to knock me down and hurt me so many times during our walks, it's brought me to tears because I'm so frustrated. I will definitely be trying this, thank you so much

Thank you! I have a 70 lbs golden retriever, he is a huge puller on his harness. At this point he can pull me and I might break something, so I have been really considering buying him something because I can’t seem to stop him comfortably anymore. Since covid, I have lost my arm strength and I can’t restrain him very much. Now, I have a 11 month old collie, and so now it’s like 120 lbs pulling against me, I can manage to stop them still, by the grace of God. However, yesterday I took them to the park and they pulled me and I snapped forward very hard. I met someone at the park with a gentle head harness, and I’m really considering this product. In the past, I wouldn’t have because I was afraid it would hurt him, but now he’s hurting me. Thank you for your wonderful video! It will definitely help.

True review, I had a lab mix and after she pulled me over on a walk I started using the gentle leader. Many miles we walked together! Now we have a large mix one year old, doesn’t like the leader either but gets excited to go walking when I take it out. At age 65, I can’t afford a fall!

Yes, they are very effective. My young German pointer was a holy terror on the lead. This has cured him. I have found that the best method is to associate it with fun. He wears it when we go to the park to play with his ball, and keeps it on whilst doing this. It is slack enough to let him open his mouth completely and carry his ball. The first couple of times he really didn’t like it. However, when he reacted, I just stopped walking and calmed him down. He soon got the idea that wearing it meant going out for fun.

Thank you for being so honest I try to tell people all the time that training your dog with treats only works as long as you’ve got a pocket full of treats. As soon as you don’t have the treats, they’re not interested, they work it out really quickly teaches the dog to be selfish. He teaches the dog to mooch of other people - it teaches the dog to look for food while you’re out, which creates more pooling - and it also makes them susceptible to taking Bates - - thank you for your honesty.

Worked like magic for our 8 month lab. I didn’t do the slow and steady introduce method. But did feed him treats once it was on to help distract him a little. He’s not completely used to it (paws at it a bit) but he’s walking right at my side and better yet not trying to eat everything on the ground.

I have a 5 month old German Shepherd that is unbelievably strong. Being a puppy, they just want to go where they want to go and she would drag the kids with her on a flat collar leash. I bought this gentle leader, did a bit of walking/training with her myself and in one morning, she was a different dog. I have trained dogs before and never even heard of this collar. All I can say is get one. They work. Thanks for the video guys!

So glad I found this video. Probably the best and most honest review I've seen. I have an almost two year old Doodle that pulls me like crazy no matter what harness I've tried. I have had this Gentle Leader for a while but had never tried it on him. I just kept buying different harnesses. Anyway, I put it on him this morning, and while he hates it, I couldn't believe the difference it made in walking him. Yes, it will take a while for him to get used to it, but I'm sticking with it. Thanks so much for an honest review!

I have a shepherd mix and he has a huge prey drive so if he was seeing anything, it was like hell to regain control over him. Even though he is very small for a German Shepherd, he is mixed with very strong dogs. I do train him and he's a very smart and passionate-about-learning dog. I'd been saving up my money and I purchased him one of these collars last month. It worked like magic. He still occasionally pulls, but it's not as hard to stop him anymore. This made our walks even more enjoyable and fun.

I used a Halti collar like that years ago for my beagle. I'm sorry you're having trouble, but glad it's doing as intended. I have a small dog and they don't make them small enough for her. You'd think it would be easy enough to train her, but after 8 years I've finally found a treat that interests her enough that she will not only eat it outside but be enticed by it. She responds well to verbal commands but outside it's just too exciting.

I got one a month ago, but resisted using it as I knew the dog (5mo Golden) would hate it! But she was dragging me (75yo male) to death! She hated the halter for a couple hundred feet, then noticed it less. A week later, she's still not thrilled with it, but mostly puts up with it. But immediately - the pulling stopped! And she no longer chews on the leash. I'm still using a flexi-leash, so she can explore. It is 16' long, and she generally stops before it stops her. I'm shocked at how well it works! Our previous dogs, 2 Goldens that weren't siblings, would also drag me up the street, at times. I was younger and stronger, but wish I had these leads back then.

I like the honesty in this video about the dog never really liking the head halter - we went through all the positive training for over a year with an entrenched 60-lb puller that came to us as an adult (not a puller, more like a surprise lunger strong enough to yank me off my feet and drag me across a parking lot). The result is that 90% of the time, the dog resists distractions and walks nicely, BUT, that 10% of bad behaviour results in injury and reinforced lunging (my hand is wrapped and mangled as I write this from the most recent impromptu "ride"). I've gone back to keeping the head halter on during all walks save for her unleashed morning training walk (in a low-distraction setting), and walking and training has become a pleasure again. As for the honesty - like your dog, my dog does not like the head halter. She resists it, but after a few minutes of "buffing" (ie circling her, rewarding her for not pulling with the head halter on, etc.) she relaxes into it. I would say for anyone with a strong puller, try this tool. It works, it doesn't harm the animal if properly used and, best of all, it will save your dog from building bad habits.

If your dog is getting angry at the gentle leader I recommend what I did with my little monster and give treats every time he put his mouth in the collar, and slower you will be able to make him go all the way under the collar, keep him using at home(and again, lots of treats) to get used to and soon he will totally forget about it! As someone who has grown up with big dogs who were trained on gentle leaders and then getting my dog in adulthood and not prioritizing using one, man I have noticed the difference. I will take a gentle leader over me getting dragged by dog when he tries to go after a deer on our runs. Especially fun when it happens mid stride and you have to quickly align yourself to the grass vs the cement sidewalk to get dragged on.

Yep our german shepherd pulls so badly on our walks and our trainer started us off with walking him on a harness - probably not the best decision because it gave him the pulling advantage - he's a year old now and taking him for walks is something I dread so I've ordered this, and it will be arriving tomorrow. I really hope this works because I fear taking our GSD out for a walk unless my brother is with me and he's holding him. I used to take him out all the time when he was younger. We'd trek the woods for hours and I miss those walks.

@@pattythomas1544 It does not work. The problem was she hated so bad she would rub her nose on the grass and did it so hard she hurt her nose and caused harm to herself. So I went back to the pinch collar. So far that has worked.

I suggest you get the "Walk N Train" head halter, and don't tighten it down on the nose like that! Dogs learn from contrast, and if it's always tight on the nose, it's confusing. You want a head halter where the nose loop is completely loose but doesn't fall off the nose. I have a playlist on headhalters that shows how to use it so your dog will be comfortable in it.

We have an 82# Labrador that my husband can usually control just by voice. Yesterday we took him for vaccines at Tractor Supply pet vet clinic and it was awful. We're hoping with a little time, this collar will stop his pulling.

When the dog is walking by your side the leash should be RELAXED. Video shows multiple clips of Hudson walking alongside the boys however the boys maintain tension. This must be rather uncomfortable for Hudson and counter intuitive because whilst he is complying the lead is still causing him discomfort. Relax the lead when Hudson complies, so that he knows that his behaviour is good.

It’s a great tool when it’s used correctly. It’s not being used correctly here. The leash should be LOOSE when not correcting the behaviour. The children are walking on a continuous tight leash. Spend more time training the dog and owner.

You need to interrupt the dogs attempts to get it off. Pull up on it and tell them to knock it off or it sucks to be them. Then release when he stops.

I'm training my GSD puppy to put it on and I also leave it on while she eats. However when we are outside in the backyard, she takes out her frustration of not being able to get it off by being extra bitey and lunging at my arm

It might work fine with a dog that tolerates it. Unfortunately neither of my dogs did, so back it went. Plan B, Slip lead leash.

The reason why your dog is still pulling on the Gentle Leader is because you adjusted the harness to be too loose. When too loose you lose the communication between you and dog. One finger spacing is quite enough as the packaging states.

A week to acclimate the GL before taking a walk? I bought one today for our 9 month old German Shepard. It took 2-3 min to put it on (yes I served treats the whole time) and about 5 min to get him used to it while walking. We have walked two times with the GL on today and he sometimes tries to get it off but he very quickly get over it for maybe in 10 min intervals before he wants to take it of again. The dog stopped pulling immediately. Within the next day or two I think all is good.

In the video at the end, the boy is holding Hudson on a tight line. Aren’t you supposed to use a loose lead? Des Hudson walk on the loose line?
@DiffFamilyReviews
@DiffFamilyReviews 5 жыл бұрын
It's supposed to be loose but it's really up to the dog as to how hard he wants to pull. Hudson still pulls a little bit and removes the slack. We don't pull it tight, he does. It's still a MAJOR improvement from where he was without the Gentle Leader. I started to walk him on a regular leash and he's doing a lot better.
Dane the "In front" walker's 2nd walk, does he get better?
