That's what I thought too IoI. Unless I misunderstood, it seems like he can't stand the original version either. I too still love the snes version, and appreciated Square Enix at least making the effort to bring remake this little-known yet innovative jrpg gem. So as a mutual fan of old-school and 'retro-styled' rpgs, I was pretty baffled when hearing David say this.

I don't think 'best game you played this year that didnt' come out this year' is a bad category at all - virtually ALL of us have tons of these titles in our backlog and it's actually interesting to discuss which classic games we played for the first time that werren't new releases. For me this would be Vagrant Story and the original Dark Souls

I’m finishing Triangle Strategy right now and I still cannot understand why people say that there is “too much story”!? It’s not super well balanced (lots of story, a battle, lots of story) but the story is very well done and makes all the characters and (even more) the world feel alive. It felt to me like the first few seasons of Game of Thrones. To me the game is almost perfect. Especially because of the the new game + letting you easily try all the diverging paths!

@@kingurameshi2183 I wholeheartedly agree that, also like Game of Thrones lol, the story is superb and then suddenly near the end it starts going way too fast and people can change sides and allegiances super quickly haha I feel they might have went over budget of something and were told to finish it with a bit less content than first expected.. but the overall experience for me was easily a 9/10

I wish I loved Xenoblade 3 as much as you did! I really really wanted this to be the game in the series that was finally great to me but still I was left bored and disappointed. I just want them to structure those games so that the story pulls me along instead of being such a slow burn! I’m 40 hours in and feel like the story just finally started going somewhere. I don’t have time for that!

#5 is a good category in my mind, we could all go back and play older games and show our appreciation for them. I played a few older RPGs for the first time year. Lunar 2 was probably my favourite of the bunch. Star Ocean 6 probably is my overall favourite of the year, however.

Xenoblade 3 easily the GOTY. Also just recently beat Trails From Zero for the first time, loved it. Personally i thought Pokemon S/V were awful and unforgivable with how they released, but at the end of the day, opinions are opinions, each to their own. doggo is absolutely adorbs!

I didn't play a lot of RPGs that came out this year. Although I did get into the Star Ocean series. Played Last Hope, First Departure R, and Divine Force. Plan on trying Second Story next year. I tried Stranger of Paradise and Valkyrie Elysium too but they felt so empty and lackluster. I agree with you on "Divine Force" being the best action RPG. The combat is fast and fluid. I'm excited to try Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, but from everything that people are saying, it sounds like its biggest innovations were lifted wholesale from Nexomon Extinction. That doesn't make Scarlet/Violet bad, it's just a plug to go play Nexomon Extinction, which improved the Pokemon formula so much that they actually made Game Freak change their stagnating ways.

I just finished Chained Echoes last night. It was so good. I was surprised that I didn't really care for the Sky Armor combat and by the end was really trying to tailor my "on foot" team abilities and formations.
