The Top 10 Books I Took When Evacuating For Hurricane Milton / An Unboxing in the Aftermath

We left the state of Florida for Hurricane Milton. In addition to the necessities, we packed up some of our favorite things to save in case the worst happened. The logic was of we lost everything, “we didn’t lose EVERYTHING.”
I packed up some books from the collection. These are the books I picked, and “Why”.

Thank you! I am a happy camper. We still have no electricity, but we have a generator. The lack of Wi-Fi has the kids a little bored, so each night we get to do some fun outdoor stuff. Last night we had a fire in the front yard, roasted hotdogs and marshmallows while my son played his guitar. Maybe we should do this again sometime.😁

We were going to a stocked home in NE Alabama, so we didn’t need to take much. We took the essential documents and the normal things you can’t leave behind. Then we took some things like what I showed in the video.😁

Have you ever thought of moving to help remove the risks of flooding you get in FL? Some might think it's excessive just for books, but considering the size & value of your collection...

I won’t flood. I’m high on a hill. It’s the wind and trees. $20,000 of tree work would make it almost fool proof for my house, but I’ve cut everything back so limbs won’t hit the house. There is always the worry of trees themselves falling.

I have thousands. I didn’t bag them. That would have taken days and I was working. I should have hired a moving company to box them and haul them away.😁

Books are nothing compared to a person's life and the lives of their families. But seriously, how can a collector decide when they love them all. Tell us more tonight if you make it to the stream.

It’s a process. For me, it’s a combo of favorite stories, rare or important versions and beautiful/well crafted editions. There are some of my favorite books that are neglected, because I don’t have any truly special versions, or the versions I do have are easily replaceable. At the same time, I picked at least one, because it was so hard to get. It’s a very inexact science.😁
