And if you say it's different point system than if it never changed Gordon have 7 and honestly probably have more. Gordon statistically in average finishes in his career has best overall average finish. And for someone saying Petty is a true 7 time champion. Doesnt know the history of his titles and would know that he didn't really earn atleast 3 of them. David Pearson should be known as the King of racing. He was the best driver of that era not Petty.

Personally I think #1 is Earnhardt and Gordon. Yeah they had a ton of respect for each other, but the rivalry extended to the fanbase in an unprecedented way. In the 90s you were either an Earnhardt fan or a Gordon fan, you couldn't be both.

Do you not think that before every race was televised, before internet, track promoters had to hype rivalries to sell tickets? Rusty said how he and DW were getting on the week after their clash at the winston but the promoters would never want to admit that. Also Regan made a great point about in the past drivers were racing to put food on the table and, for some, a wrecked race car could mean not racing the following week, obviously that is not the case for nowadays drivers. David Pearson was the most talented driver ive ever seen, RIP.

The main reason for the rivalries not being like they used to it's because of sponsorship dollars. Everybody is afraid to make a sponsor look bad so the dollar speaks loudest in the corporate days of NASCAR. That's a lot to do with why old school fans have left. Plus it's hard to get behind a 20 year old when you're a grown man.
