This past month really does feel nostalgic! We have YTPs, PMVs, animations, reacts, parodies, and Hasbro reminding us all that despite the fabulous show they've given us, they're still a soul-less money-grubbing corporation. Episode one of my abridged series got blocked several times, but then I uploaded it with an ugly filter on it and it got copyrighted but not blocked, then I tried some non-ugly filters but those got blocked. So Hasbro seemingly only allows ugly versions of their content

Hasbro has the weirdest relationship with their fans. Are they doing this for any other property, or is it only My Little Pony? I get that the Brony fanbase isn't the target demographic, and it has most definitely scarred some kids for life, but does Hasbro really think it can censor the entire Internet? The Internet is forever. Do they seriously have this much money to waste on killing the fanbase instead of making G5 better? I just don't really get what is to be gained from all this?

I feel like the main issue is the derivative works clause of the copyright law. I’ve seen it with fanfiction: There are even fans of certain IPs (such as a Star Trek forum I found) who will accuse fan creators of stealing even though they’re not trying to commit piracy or lay a claim to an IP that isn’t their own. There are even a couple of authors who have written fanworks themselves who then prohibit others doing it on their own original stuff, either because their legal teams told them should or they probably felt they would lose the copyright. If it’s that easy to lose ownership of an IP, then the law definitely needs to be re-examined and/or updated. Right now, though, the law as written doesn’t account for fan labor and as such can lump it in with practices such as actual theft and fraud. The only thing keeping it from being flat-out illegal is the fact that IP owners tolerate it to some degree. And yet there are a few I’ve seen around the Internet who want to make it even stricter. One person on Quora actually tried to compare it to something akin to a stranger coming into your house because they believed they had a right to sit on your couch.

The video of the fan animation that took literal YEARS to put together for the Xmas song "Days Gone By" got impacted by this. They had to remove about a minute of the video to keep the video on KZbin! 😠 I hope to God those bastar*s don't end up hitting me.
