Jokes aside my longstanding headcanon is that Discord's lion paw is actually a sphinx paw. In his original appearance he had an affinity for riddles, and he tends to speak in a mysterious non-straightforward way a lot of the time. He's also very paradoxical, which is sort of a sphinx thing.

Biggest sin of this episode is that the Sphinx used was the one from Greek mythology, not from Egyptian mythology. Greek Sphinxes are woman headed lions (occasionally with wings) that force people to solve riddles. Egyptian Sphinxes are androsphinxes, aka the ones you actually see built in Egypt. They’re males and are benevolent, depicting pharaohs, and are not winged.

Missed one! In the season 2 episode "Hearth's Warming Eve", (about 8 minutes, 30 seconds in) where Pinkie (Chancellor Puddinghead) arrives through the chimney, she mentions having been elected because she "knows how to think outside the box." So it's canon that pre-Equestria earth ponies followed a democratic process in choosing their leaders.

I suspect Somnambula was the real hidden villain all along given all the contradictions. Girl literally allowed an entire town to be named after herself and build a statue of her and we get very little in the way of actual evidence of the things she says she did. She could've capitalistically taken credit for *all* of that. Also you're right. Caballeron's skull cutiemark does actually have a strikingly similar structure to Discord's face.
