Excellent instruction! Especially liked the subtlety of feathering the paddle, both underwater and above water on stroke recoveries. Distinguishing between whitewater and flat water canoe strokes would make another great lesson. Once again, excellent job!

Showing how the stroke is done with the paddle out of the water was the best! All the other videos showed the stroke in the water so it was impossible to see what was going on.

Watched just to see aluminum canoe. Reminds me of my Smoker Craft I had as a kid. My dad sold it while I was in Navy. He kept the money, too! Said that it didn't even cover the 10 years of storage. Just how he rolled. Miss that canoe. Miss him more.

@@anatrejo4542 4:42 lined up even with the tip of his paddle the fish comes up at the top 1/3 of the screen in line with the algae. you can see it underwater before then but is easier to see there once it breaks the surface.

How would these stokes work in a tandem canoe? Thank you
@OSMEtv
@OSMEtv 7 ай бұрын
The strokes are the same for both solo and tandem canoeing. When canoeing tandem, the stern man (person in the back) is the driver, controls the direction, and calls the strokes. The Bowman mainly uses power strokes and sweeps as directed by the stern man.. Thanks for the question. Happy canoeing!
@Dreqan
@Dreqan 3 жыл бұрын
Great video, thanks! I have a question: When doing this in tandem, should the front person also be doing a J-Stroke or a regular power stroke?
@OSMEtv
@OSMEtv 3 жыл бұрын
The bow man just does a power stroke or does sweeps as directed by the stern man.

If it is a two man operation, one thing he's right on is stern man determines course. Only in situations where an ob-structure can only be seen via the bow person should he/she take control. Some of what this guy says is correct, but some is just a waste. This guys video is a simple help video. Not to get anyone out there into canoe racing, but a detailed paddling technique since Eujean Jensen invented the bent shaft paddle, stroke & steering has evolved( slow or fast paddlers should learn). A book on E-Bay or Amazon of "Canoe Racing" by Peter Heed and Dick Mansfield in paper back used can go for 5 to 8 busks(worth every penny). Also just to actually see video of many canoes using this technique then type in "AuSalbe River Sprints" into KZbin search bar to see 50+ video's

The J-stroke, executed as the dragging J, is less effective than the goon stroke in the stern. As a whitewater paddler, I seldom even J in the center of the boat.
@OSMEtv
@OSMEtv 2 жыл бұрын
Correct, the J is most effective when used in the stern position. Center position, whitewater paddlers, require quicker, more advanced maneuvers. Thanks for your comment.

I appreciate the simplicity of the instructions. However, your demonstrations, both on land and in water, need to be much more precise. Stacked hands in the forward (or reverse) stroke, fully buried blade on the catch in the forward stroke and in the sweep, and proper sweeps depending on paddler position (bow to hip for bow paddler and hip to stern for stern paddler). I also prefer gender neutral and inclusive language (tandem and solo, bow and stern paddler). So, while beginners will hear the basic instructions, which is awesome, your demonstrations should be perfect, and they are not
