#3 - not always the case. Sometimes, it is nice to show the bird in its environment - for example, a Golden headed Cisticola in reeds alongside a riverbed.
@travinthebush4 күн бұрын
Totally agree! If a “busy” background can help tell the story of the birds environment, then that’s great. Something I definitely need to work more on.
@davepastern4 күн бұрын
@@travinthebush spot on. I think many people are so occupied with "detail" that they think they need to be super tight on the bird, no environment, just bird on a stick. That same with regards to megapixels too - 24mp does cut it, at least, if you learn bird behaviour and how to better approach them. For example. a few months ago, I got a rather nice shot of a Red-browed finch. I noticed a small group of them going back and forth to a dead tree lying on its side on the ground. I watched them for a bit and then approached. They took off. I kneeled and waited a few minutes and sure enough, they came back and I got a rather nice shot.

That’s awesome! Heat haze is the worst and for the longest time Ihad no idea what it was. I would always think that there was something wrong with my cameras autofocus 😅.

Great tips Travis. I agree with the high ISO. I was afraid at first, but it is such an easy fix in LrC. When using single point on a perched bird., and it decides to fly away, do you still attempt the shot? Or do you knowingly head out to only capture birds in flight with it already set to a wider point? That is one of my biggest struggles, birds in flight. Looking forward to more tips!
@travinthebush11 күн бұрын
That’s a great questions ! When shooting perched birds I will still use single point but I try and keep my shutter speed high enough that, incase that bird does fly away, I’m ready for it. I know thats not always realistic given the lighting conditions but I try and keep my shutter speed as high as the conditions will let me. I can do a video on birds in flight next!

Excellent! For birds in flight, would turning eye detection off help the camera autofocus lock on quicker? The youtube Whistling Wings Photography recommends turning eye detection off for birds in flight.
@travinthebush4 күн бұрын
That’s a great question! I could definitely see it being faster as it’s one less step for the camera to perform. For myself though, I wouldn’t do it. Main reason being that the Z8 eye detection is pretty spot on, even for in flight shots. I would rather have a sharp photo with the eye in focus vs a photo not totally in focus or not on the eye. I think it is a great tip if you are going for a once in a lifetime shot though. If you have one shot at it, like a rare bird, I might consider it.

Yes that's right buy that 15k lens
@travinthebush10 күн бұрын
$15k? That’s like….. a whole week’s worth of avocados here in Canada! 😅 Seriously though, you don’t need to spend that much to get closer to the action. A used Sigma 150-600mm lens can be found on Facebook Marketplace or other platforms for a decent cost and it’s a solid option for bird photography.

Meanwhile I have to crop because I don't have a 600 mm lens. Meanwhile I cannot afford it. I have absorbed around 20+ variety local birds just in my neighborhood but haven't successfully captured all of them in my cam! yet. Thank You Sir for uploading the detailed video about Bird Photography.
@travinthebush11 күн бұрын
It’s definitely more difficult using a short focal length, not impossible, but definitely more of a challenge. It can be argued though that you learn more using a shorter focal length because you have to get more creative in how you get your shots. I hope you are able to catch all 20+ of your birds!

Sir. What about shooting birds from a safari jeep? Any tips? I have a Nikon Z8. Do I use a tripod? Image stabilizer? Etc. I hope you answer or make a video. Just wondering because Ill be going in a month. I have seen people use one of those pillow looking things and set their camera on it to reduce vibration. If so, should I still use Image Stabilizing?
