Just because its the end of the world doesn't mean you can't still have a sweet ride! With tongue planted firmly in glovebox, I take a look a some of the cars in the Long Dark and the memories I have of them.

One house in Milton always makes me sad and wonder what the story is. There's no adult bed and just a child's cot (crib) with maybe a blanket and teddy bear. I imagine two poor parents who couldn't afford a bed of their own, but they managed to scrape together enough money to buy the cot so their baby could sleep comfortably while they bunked downstairs on the sofas.

@@dhdunn I get that too. A stark reminder that there were people in this world, with families and kids, who are either no longer alive, or fled all they ever knew and and to seek more survivable conditions.

Theres letter inside in Wintermute, from a woman that says that she cant no longer handle it herself and that she cant stop crying, because the town is now so silent and that she will sent him food from mainland

I think the weird tech level In TLD is partly explained by the economic stagnation occurring in setting, and especially in Great Bear. Prior to the End people were surviving off of rationed supplies. So modern tech like electric cars and computers exist but people couldn't afford them, save for the couple of old looking computers we see and that electric car charger.

I think it's more accurate that most can't afford newer stuff, but a few rich islanders can, and they're the source of the newer tech on the island, along with mainlanders on the island bringing their tech with them accounting for some of the other new tech amid the out of place old classics. Also, there was still goods being transported to the island both by ship and by air. Proof of that exists both in the form of the 737 cargo plane that crashed on the summit of Timberwolf Mountain, (and the passenger 737 that crashed in the hills above Pleasant Valley for that matter), and the activities going on around Forsaken Airfield which appears to have been in full operation right up to the geomagnetic storm.

@@dhdunn As far as I know, the late 90s was probably when the last of those rolled off the assembly lines. By the 2000s, most new cars had power windows.

@@Seriously_Unserious the cargo plane on the summit is 747 given the airliner can fit in the cargo space on the summit (yes, the 747 is that massive) it was likely going over the island to either Anchorage or Vancouver and merely fell to its doom over great bear by chance. I would love to see maybe a crashed Jet somewhere like a CF-18 that was doing NORAD patrol, it would've been neat.

I believe the cars are connected to loot tables. I started As The Dead Sleep over a dozen times. On my way across the bridge, before hitting the cannery, if there was a red car (everytime), there was a box of wooden matches on the ground. The two were connected for me. Different color cars the matches would be inside the vehicle, or cardboard, or not present. I know that is a very limited sample size, but an observation nonetheless.

I think the best car in The Long Dark is in the DLC at Transfer Pass. The car closest to the small Train Station. If you start a fire in the Train Station's fireplace, the heat radiates far enough where you can sleep in the car outside, even in a blizzard. So, if you have cabin fever you can sleep in the car next to the building and the fire inside won't blow out. Transfer pass also has no hostile wildlife and at the same time plenty of animals to kill for food, too. Also, lots of wood, sticks, acorns, and cat tail stalks. There are frozen ponds too, just don't know if you can fish in them. One of the smallest regions in the game but, one of the greatest safe havens.

The gate crash truck at the whale factory in DP has saved my life on more than one occasion. I even waited out a couple bouts of cabin fever in it after forging using the fire in the bed trick.

Nice idea. I always handle the inevitable 'DP forge fever' at the church on the way out of the zone. But that requires a bedroll. Your way means you can forge there before you've found the bedroll. Nice 👍

final approach is one of my favourite locations in the game, its so cool to imagine the first aurora hitting causing the helos electronics to go haywire making it almost unflyable, but the pilot still manages a reasonably controlled, albeit rough descent and by the corpse position, it looks like they had someone on the rescue winch while they were going down, hell of a ride for him.

If you're wondering where all the electric cars are, the first flare ruptured the batteries and all of them burned to dust. Some ignighted the houses that you see burned down every now and then.

I love the car next to the farm house in PV. I've killed many a bear from that car. I died on loper in that car when a blizzard came and I froze.

I just recently discovered a bit of the history on the ML rail truck from the computer in the BR maintenance yard. It's neat that some of the vehicles have their own little stories.

For me, the most important car is the truck in Keeper's pass just before entering Blackrock. I don't know how many blizzards I've had to shelter from in there, even multi day blizzards one after the other (Keeper's Pass really is worse then PV for blizzards). Another is another car on the south side of Keeper's pass, just past the bridge where you have to head down to the river, there's often a multi pack of wolves near that car and it's perfect for waiting out the wolves or warming up from the frequent bad weather in the pass while dealing with clearing those wolves out of the way down to the rest of the pass.

not the video i expected when clicking the vid (more like "best cars to use"), it was more interesting than that! i really like the environmental storytelling in tld too. i dont actually think the tld storymode is very interesting, its not very high quality writing to me, the small bits of story and lore we can find in the world are way more intriguing to me. everytime i find a teddybear (ive spotted them in i think 3 places so far, or at least 2?) i always just come to a full stop and stare at it for some time. wondering whose teddy that was, why it is where it is. i have several memories of trying to wait out a blizzard in a car and the dread of the health bar going down while the blizzard keeps roaring. especially when i played in blackrock after it was new and i didnt have a clue in what direction to go from that car, to find some better shelter from the storm. so it was between running blindly through a blizzard or staying shut inside that cold vehicle for just long enough. i dont even remember if i lived or died but i remember the feeling. i also remember getting in a car on that traffic jam on a bridge in mountain town, looting car by car and i guess i sat down for a while in one of the final cars and probably started checking through my inventory for stuff to leave and lose some extra weight. or maybe i was writing down notes, but i had my menu open. then i heard a terrifyingly close grunt.... close the inventory.... the bear is right next to me, outside the window. never saw one that close before without being mauled. i was able to wait for him to pass and safely move on.
