Which guns are the most durable? In this episode of the “TFBTV Goes to Hollywood” series, James Reeves speaks with Larry Zanoff of Independent Studio Services about which of the 16,000 guns ISS keeps in inventory are the most reliable. ISS’s guns are rented out for Hollywood productions, video games, and more throughout the year, and these guns have millions of cumulative rounds run through them. Thus, Larry and the gang at ISS have an idea of what the five most durable guns are based upon their extensive experience firing blank and conventional ammunition through real guns. Which 5 are the hardest working? Watch today’s video to find out.

I was a AR guy for YEARS. Never really paid mind to the AK and it's "hype" or so I thought. Ended up getting one thrown in for a trade on one of my other guns. I neglected the shit out of that thing like it was a shameful love child born from a night with a $40 prostitute. Never failed regardless of how much I WANTED it to. Finally broke down and acknowledged the hype behind their reliability was well founded. Now I own more AK's than AR's. AR is still the king of customizability and ergonomics though. That said I'd trust every one of my AK's to run like a top regardless of which I reached for and if it was well lubed / cleaned or not

Forgotten Weapons did a video with a Canadian competitor to ISS that focused on what they have to do to make a normal weapon function with stage blanks. Obviously manuals (revolvers, lever guns, pump guns, bolt guns, etc.) are the easiest as they often need no modification at all but they said it was quite a challenge to figure out how to make a Glock blank friendly, they have to do a lot to it to make it reliable on set. Conversely they found the Beretta 92 to be one of the easiest semi-autos to convert to shooting blanks reliably.

Accuracy is not a criterion for a prop gun.
@AutismFamilyChannel
@AutismFamilyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomrogers5862 Thanks but I'm not referring to just the accuracy based on bore deterioration, rather how durable the barrel is after many lead and copper jackets go through the barrel vs. blanks, causing small cracks or fissures in the bore, which has happened to some guns. Obviously this would be thousands and thousands of rounds to get a clearer result of wear and tear, but just thought would be interesting to know the difference. ;)
@tomrogers5862
@tomrogers5862 3 жыл бұрын
@@AutismFamilyChannel Given noncorrosive powders and primers and meticulous cleaning after each project, I can't imagine chemical stress is a significant issue. As to mechanical stress, recoil energy generated by a blank is far less than that by a live round. For a given trigger pull, a live round must put much more overall stress -- mechanical and chemical -- on a firearm than a blank round does.
@AutismFamilyChannel
@AutismFamilyChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomrogers5862 Then you raise a good point. Is it fair (based on Hollywood guns that use blanks) to use them as a standard for durability, if they don't have nearly the same stress put on them as live rounds? I hope you know I'm not being argumentative, I'm just interested in this topic is all ;)

3:27 lol I'm sorry, I know the best of the best are often in military and sometimes LE service, but I've had to help cops figure out how to load their own firearms and I've never been in LE or mil. Some of the most unsafe gun handling I've ever seen has been done by veterans and police. To be fair I've gotten most of my tips knowledge and instruction from LE/mil so the expertise is there but the idea the average person in service who carries a firearm because it's their job is "highly trained" is just wrong. Most cops never had a firearm until they got issued one.

Military members can be God awful with firearm safety. There are just some people on this planet who are incapable of treating a firearm with respect. Constant weapon flagging from Specialists, Officers who put more rounds into clearing barrels than range targets, and one unfortunate moron who pointed a loaded shotgun at my chest (He thought it was unloaded) who's only alive today because his 1 year old daughter was in the room at the time and apparently I cared more about her safety than he did. The US military truly is an equal sampling of the US population in many things, and one of those things is percentage of morons.

Just before 9/11, I walked over to the MickyD on base. This base has a special security force for special weapons (I may have given it away;-). I'm in line waiting to order when half a dozen security force folks come in, dump all of their M16A2s on a table without safing them, and walk away and get in line behind me. I would have ducked and run except the weapons were pointed at the main drag through the base and away from the counter.

“In a way, the reliability on the movie set has to be higher than it does in real life.” While I am sure he doesn’t mean this, it sounds like he is saying it’s worse to lose a take to an unreliable gun than your life.

My understanding of this comment is that if you have a malfunction with a firearm in real life, you at least have the option to take immediate remedial action, while that is not really an option in a movie scene.

3:13 to paraphrase, if a gun jams in real life a police officer could die (but he knows how to clear a malfunction). But if a gun jams in a movie, the whole take could be ruined because the actor won't know how to clear a malfunction. Conclusion: the guns used in movies have to be more reliable. Smh
