back in march when there was no TP on the shelves, then when there was no ammo on the shelves, i was smart enough to invest in 9mm (steel) ammo at 15/rd, wife is not happy that i have 20k more rds of 9mm, but the current price today is 49.9cents/rd, and since i picked up a draco nak9, pistol, i should not have any issues running it...

@@DREAMSINDIGITAL yes. But plan to pay a lot for ammo. Maybe start with an AR with a 7.62x39 upper. That's still easy to find, and affordable. If you want to go with a different round after things calm down you can always buy another upper.

One of my most prized guns is a S&W 629 Performance Center that I traded some silver coins for at a pawn shop. It had literally never been fired except the two test rounds from the factory and because I bought the silver low and sold it high I only paid $400 for a $1,000+ gun!

“9mm Ammo is plentiful”, well not so much right now. This is why you don’t wait until a pandemic or political scare to buy guns or ammo. Always have at least 500-1000 rounds of ammo for your defense guns on tap just in case panic buying occurs or the supply is cut off. Gun stores are closing around me because of this coronavirus fear so online is becoming the only option. You can never have enough ammo.

And that's one reason I decided, long ago, to go with a small number of general use caliber rather than a lot of calibers. I have a lot of .22LR, 9x19, 5.56mm, and 12 gauge. I have a few boxes of .45 for a gun I've had for a while, and a few boxes of stuff like .25 and .40, .38 Spl that I picked up for range trips and whatever. I can find other calibers and guns if the worst happens, but I wanted to make sure i had enough of my staple calibers.
@borisentwistle
@borisentwistle 4 жыл бұрын
My suggestion is 1000 rounds per defensive firearm and 500 per firearm for everything else. I have 500 rounds for All of my hunting rifles and shotguns. When it comes to 22 lr I have 2000 rounds per cause it's cheap and cause thats the last resort caliber. So if shit goes completely sideways its light enough to grab 1000 rounds, my 10/22 takedown, my TX 22 and hit the road. That's my prepper advice. As for all the new gun owners, please be careful and make youtube your best friend right now. Learn from TFB tv and guys like Hickok45. You need to know the basics. Reach out to family or friends who know firearms. And to all my fellow 2A patriots. Say NO to HR 5717. This is the bill we have all talked about. Its here and we need to stop it now. If not then the registry is apon us. Along with 1 gun a month. And all you PA natives HR 2344 is trying to permit ammo sales. We need to stand up and be heard or we will be fighting a real battle soon. You know what they say about the tree of liberty and the blood of patriots and tyrants. I'm scared that moment is close at hand. Lets stop it before that happens.

Great general advice. 1,000 rounds and you should have at least 6 mags for each gun you carry or plan to use in a SHTF scenario. For the SHTF scenario, I believe the sky is the limit for how many *loaded* mags you need.

@@skytheavian4242 Unfortunately true, still legal in all 50 states at least. My advice for our friends up north is, by whatever means necessary, replace your current government with one that equally splits power between cities and rural areas. Have a senate based on county/parish (and unchangeable) and a house based on population. Have a president elected independently. Also, anyone who gets a government paycheck is barred from voting for 1 full election cycle. That would fix nearly every political issue in the USA, should work for Canada too as your system is far worse than ours.

I have some comments vehemently disagreeing with my statement about 5.56mm/.223 penetration at about the 20min mark (stating that it will fragment after several layers of sheetrock). After looking further into it in the past hour or so, obviously, this will depend on the type of ammo used. Some rounds will fragment or begin to fragment after passing through an interior wall while others will start to tumble. In the majority of cases, the point still stands (i.e., .223 being less of an over-penetration risk than other firearms) but it's still worth posting this comment so viewers won't rely on what was an over-generalization on my part. Thanks for your comments, per usual. - James ETA: See here for a decent comparison of different rounds through sheetrock. Note the differences between .223 and pistol/shotgun rounds: how-i-did-it.org/drywall/results.html

@@tfbtv You're comment was pretty spot on as far as the over penetrations argument for 556 goes. Once that little round hits anything it starts going ass forward, and tearing itself apart. It poses much less danger, in particular less danger of the lethal type, than pistol rounds that weigh twice as much or more and move half as fast or less. I'd rather get hit by a 19 grain 556 fragment that made it through the wall than get hit with the 115 grain 9mm that still moving at the sedate pace of 850 fps that made it through that wall hahaha.

Regarding the Bird Sot comments: I'm a retired Weapons Instructor for state corrections. We issued standard high brass, 00 buck, and 7-1/2C bird to our tower Officers. The bird shot is more of a "get their attention" round. At defensive distances, a well placed shot could definitely cause serious injury or death, but tactically, at greater distances, that's just unlikely to happen reliably. What is does do, is wound, and give the intended target something to think about. A person hit with a shotgun ballast is unlikely to charge the shooter. The 00, on the other hand, is much more likely to permanently put an end to an attack. Think of it this way, 7-1/2C bird shot has around 400, .095" pellets, which means the available energy must be shared by all those individual pellets. 00 buck, on the other hand has 9, .33 caliber projectiles, so each pellet carries much more of the total available energy to the target. As for the .223 breaking up on sheet rock: Although he didn't actually say so, I'd have to believe he's talking about frangible ammunition. These projectiles are designed to break up upon impact, but I've never seen a demonstration of their characteristics when penetrating sheet rock walls. They do drop their energy into the target very quickly, but I'm not convinced about being able to drop all that energy into 3/8" or 1/2" of gypsum board. That said, I would tell you this, I keep a mag of 50 grain frangible 5.56 with my AR, for home defense purposes. JHP will go right through a person at close distance, frangibles are extremely unlikely to over penetrate an attacker, keeping friends and family much safer. Hope this helps, stay safe....

Just my preference, is all.

Addressing a couple issues you raised: 1. In discussing 9mm handguns you raised the issue if ease of use for people with limited hand strength, such as the elderly. This would be a good time to mention the S&W M&P Shield 9EZ, which is specifically designed to address that issue. I don't own one but know several people who do, and they swear by them. It's definitely a niche, but a good one to consider. 2. Regarding recoil with shotguns, don't forget that several ammunition manufacturers market a 00 Buck round with reduced recoil, calling it a law enforcement round. You may lose so e range, but depending on your situation. It's an option to consider.

Everyone bashing Daniel for being a liberal gun owner needs to stop and think for a second. If more liberals start getting into guns then the democratic party would have to drop gun control as part of their platform and then we can start rolling back current gun laws. If you have liberal friends (or any non gun friends in general) that you feel are responsible enough to own a gun, get them into guns. Start off slow with pistols, shotguns, and "featureless" semiauto rifles (an unmodified SKS or similar comes to mind) and then work them up to ARs and AKs with "high capacity" detachable magazines. Show them that modern firearms aren't dangerous or scary and turn them into gun people. This strategy worked wonderfully with some of my family that used to be either non gun people (people that dont care either way), fudds ("no one needs an AR15 or AK47 or more than six shots in a handgun") or anti gun people and now just about everyone in my family has some type of semiauto rifle like an AR, AK, or bubba'd SKS (gotta love my former fudd of an uncle) and the ones that don't at least have a pistol with so called "high capacity" magazines and refuse to vote for people that want to restrict their right to own their guns and magazines.

James.. I love your channel and I agree with all of the points in this presentation save one. I believe it’s irresponsible to tell someone that .223 doesn’t go through multiple walls. They do. I run a range for my state and I do training for police and certain federal agencies and I’ve done extensive ballistic testing through various media and I can assure you that unless a round hits something more solid than Sheetrock it is absolutely lethal through MULTIPLE sheets up to four for certain as I have personally witnessed. The likelihood that it would not strike a harder/denser media is low for sure and I think that an AR is indeed a good home defense platform but we should be aware of its liability when making the decision. Just my thoughts. Still a big fan.

Common sense suggests your main priority would be to take a defensive stance & hunker down till things blew over. Not looking for a fight but ready for one. You can also backpack with a couple thousand far easier than you could with just hundreds of bigger calibers. And just have shot placement when hunting. Coupled with a suppressor, it's a winner. Everyone talks shit about a 22lr until one is pointed at them.

As a left-hander, I love the AR. He's right, you don't have to take your hand off the grip to load, reload, lock the bolt back, chamber, turn on the optic. I have large hands so I can hit the bolt release with my trigger finger quite easily. My AR is nearly identical to the M4 I trained and deployed with. The only differences are a 16-inch barrel instead of the 14.5 on the M4, the trigger pull is only about 7 pounds instead of 10 and there is no "burst" setting. The longer barrel and lighter trigger pull are improvements over the M4 and I don't even miss the "burst" setting. Neither I, nor anyone I ever fought alongside, ever used it in combat. We seldom ever even used it on the range.

Beginner firearm. Revolver! Open the cylinder and it’s “safe” (no forgotten round in the chamber to run down a barrel when the trigger is pulled - as I’ve personally witnessed 3x. Not fun.). No slide to manipulate. No tap/rack drills to teach. No real disassembly required for basic maintenance. Not enough rounds? If one needs to fire more than 6 rounds to get bad guys jumping out the nearest window...then will it really take 1-6 more to convince them to leave? A heavy trigger is, if anything, better for a beginner who - without years of experience - may be too heavy on a trigger anyway.

Revolvers have a place and I have one as a backup backup gun. Saying a "beginner" NEEDS a revolver is a very simple minded Idea. It's not difficult to take five minutes and explain to someone how a semi automatic pistol works. Granted a revolver is much more simple but I've heard guys in gun shops say I'm getting my first pistol or I want to get my wife a gun and the usual response is "oh get you a revolver". Asinine. A semi automatic pistol is not rocket science for a normal reasonable minded person. Please stop spreading this plagued idea.

I agree that the top choice is an AR-15 in .223/5.56, but not to the panic buyer. I like it because of its flexible platform and my personal favorite addition is the Subsonic .300 AAC Blackout with a suppressor. First introduced to it in the early 80's as the 300 Whisper by a hunting buddy. I didn't get it then, only as a fringe military specialty tool. Now I believe every AR-15 owner should consider a short barreled AR upper in subsonic 300 Blackout (ideally with suppressor) as their follow up purchase and have it installed on their AR lower with light, laser and red dot sight, when at home in their bedroom. Just passing it on.

As someone who has been shooting for 40+ years I think all of that was really excellent advice and very well explained - really great info for folks that are new to shooting. And nobody pays me to say this: If you can afford the Sig Sauer P238 (in .380 Auto) - it is the finest and most reliable pistol I have ever owned and I absolutely love shooting it - it is the "Small size gun with the Full size Price" but if you rent one and shoot it you will absolutely know where that money goes. Some will tell you .380 is under powered - Ok to be fair this is somewhat true - however: Most self defense shootouts statistically happen between 6 and 25 feet. What it lacks in power it gives back in exceptionally manageable recoil and having a gun that you can confidently wield and shoot accurately without being terrified of the bang - that's worth something more than what money alone buys. It is the exact perfect amount of gun, small, relatively lightweight loaded, and easily carried (which you will do far more than you will ever shoot it) Additionally they are beautifully refined and come in many very nice finish / grip combos. Go shoot one and thank me later. Really great Video! - MM

@Sp1der44
@Sp1der44 Жыл бұрын
@@reddead9473 the specs on the 5.7 do legitimately make it a great choice but - it is way more expensive, the gun is larger, heavier, and has a longer grip length due to the cartridges and I don't see 5.7 ammo on the shelf anywhere so until it becomes more reasonable and widely available as .380 I'll stick to that. My point is about EDC not the most powerful gun / high capacity combo. Also watch .380 ballistic tests - you're not gonna just shake it off Like you didn't just catch a piece of hot lead - you're going to the E.R.

Not all .223 is the same anymore than 5.56. Fragmentation also depends on the type of round, as well as the velocity. It doesn't just "happen" at any range. Also, light rounds do tend to lose energy fast. If you're worried about dry wall, then don't even use a 9mm becasue that's going to through plenty of walls just fine.
