That is a surprisingly common misconception. Had a local guy up for murder, but he legit thought that. Really it's lethal up to probably ten feet, not considering a golden bb scenario. I will say it's still not a bad choice for home defense, very few people are going to want to push after getting pelted even well outside lethal range.
@hux20002 жыл бұрын
@@jakeand9020 Yeah, it's standard lore among gun guys that a 12-gauge with 00 buck is the only viable shotgun and load for home defense. It doesn't matter how many times you demonstrate unequivocally that that's not only wrong, but that it's actually a really BAD combination for that task (over-penetration + deafening noise being the two main issues), they'll still turn up their noses at lighter loads and higher gauges. As you say, bird shot can absolutely be lethal at the kind of in-home ranges we're talking about. EVIDENCE matters, people, not "bigger is obviously best".

@@hux2000 #4 buck is best. My opinion. Still got mine loaded with 00 and slugs though. But to the birdshot, have you ever heard of the cutshell method? You take a standard bird load and cut right behind the shot, the shell will disconnect and go out with the shot if you do it right and act like a slug. You'll only get one shot at a time but it's something to think about if bird is all you have. And I'm of the opinion that while birdshot most certainly can be deadly, it is a piss poor choice for a defensive load. I'd rather a load that will hit like a freight train and reliably stop a threat than one that is dependent on them being point blank. Also I've got one loaded with rock salt shells. @ He mentions that .308 may be overkill. If someone is hunting and hopes to eat the game, they would want to use a cartridge that humanely kills the game animal but does not cause catastrophic tissue damage that would ruin excessive meat. For keeping oneself alive in a self defense scenario, this is not a concern and many people might even prefer the excessive stopping power. The old-timers I refer too had served in military action using either 30-06 or .308 and appreciated it's impressive lethal power. Therefore, there's no such thing as overkill unless you're gonna eat it. Somewhat dark I suppose but I appreciated the point of it.

And that's one reason I decided, long ago, to go with a small number of general use caliber rather than a lot of calibers. I have a lot of .22LR, 9x19, 5.56mm, and 12 gauge. I have a few boxes of .45 for a gun I've had for a while, and a few boxes of stuff like .25 and .40, .38 Spl that I picked up for range trips and whatever. I can find other calibers and guns if the worst happens, but I wanted to make sure i had enough of my staple calibers.
@borisentwistle4 жыл бұрын
My suggestion is 1000 rounds per defensive firearm and 500 per firearm for everything else. I have 500 rounds for All of my hunting rifles and shotguns. When it comes to 22 lr I have 2000 rounds per cause it's cheap and cause thats the last resort caliber. So if shit goes completely sideways its light enough to grab 1000 rounds, my 10/22 takedown, my TX 22 and hit the road. That's my prepper advice. As for all the new gun owners, please be careful and make youtube your best friend right now. Learn from TFB tv and guys like Hickok45. You need to know the basics. Reach out to family or friends who know firearms. And to all my fellow 2A patriots. Say NO to HR 5717. This is the bill we have all talked about. Its here and we need to stop it now. If not then the registry is apon us. Along with 1 gun a month. And all you PA natives HR 2344 is trying to permit ammo sales. We need to stand up and be heard or we will be fighting a real battle soon. You know what they say about the tree of liberty and the blood of patriots and tyrants. I'm scared that moment is close at hand. Lets stop it before that happens.

If you have to toast an intruder with a $4/shell Bismuth goose load, he's going to be toasted. Shotguns and super cheap 9mm handguns (hi-points, SCCYs, etc) are probably used in the overwhelming majority of home defense cases especially for non-gun, non-wealthy people like single moms, people food service, people new to guns, etc. And although bird shot isn't ideal it's probably what most of those people will get and it will probably end the fight all the same, especially since in real life most attackers run when even the hint of a gun is brought out

I have some comments vehemently disagreeing with my statement about 5.56mm/.223 penetration at about the 20min mark (stating that it will fragment after several layers of sheetrock). After looking further into it in the past hour or so, obviously, this will depend on the type of ammo used. Some rounds will fragment or begin to fragment after passing through an interior wall while others will start to tumble. In the majority of cases, the point still stands (i.e., .223 being less of an over-penetration risk than other firearms) but it's still worth posting this comment so viewers won't rely on what was an over-generalization on my part. Regarding the Bird Sot comments: I'm a retired Weapons Instructor for state corrections. We issued standard high brass, 00 buck, and 7-1/2C bird to our tower Officers. The bird shot is more of a "get their attention" round. At defensive distances, a well placed shot could definitely cause serious injury or death, but tactically, at greater distances, that's just unlikely to happen reliably. What is does do, is wound, and give the intended target something to think about. A person hit with a shotgun ballast is unlikely to charge the shooter. The 00, on the other hand, is much more likely to permanently put an end to an attack. Think of it this way, 7-1/2C bird shot has around 400, .095" pellets, which means the available energy must be shared by all those individual pellets. 00 buck, on the other hand has 9, .33 caliber projectiles, so each pellet carries much more of the total available energy to the target. As for the .223 breaking up on sheet rock: Although he didn't actually say so, I'd have to believe he's talking about frangible ammunition. These projectiles are designed to break up upon impact, but I've never seen a demonstration of their characteristics when penetrating sheet rock walls. They do drop their energy into the target very quickly, but I'm not convinced about being able to drop all that energy into 3/8" or 1/2" of gypsum board. That said, I would tell you this, I keep a mag of 50 grain frangible 5.56 with my AR, for home defense purposes. JHP will go right through a person at close distance, frangibles are extremely unlikely to over penetrate an attacker, keeping friends and family much safer. Hope this helps, stay safe....

Just my preference, is all.

Addressing a couple issues you raised: 1. In discussing 9mm handguns you raised the issue if ease of use for people with limited hand strength, such as the elderly. This would be a good time to mention the S&W M&P Shield 9EZ, which is specifically designed to address that issue. I don't own one but know several people who do, and they swear by them. It's definitely a niche, but a good one to consider. 2. Regarding recoil with shotguns, don't forget that several ammunition manufacturers market a 00 Buck round with reduced recoil, calling it a law enforcement round. You may lose so e range, but depending on your situation. It's an option to consider.

I feel the need to unfortunately disagree with James on the overpenetration issues. I've worked shootings where an AR was used.....very rarely but they do happen. One I have in mind was where someone was shooting up a house with what turned out to be a stolen AR with no sights. Caught them that night and recovered the gun. Anywho, my point was this. We did ballistic tracks on some rounds that went through vinyl siding, exterior sheathing, and 3 layers of drywall before they were keyholing. Yep, through the first room and into the hallway before some, not all, of the bullets fragmented. So still be sure of your target and what's beyond it. Also, your mileage will vary wildly based upon ammo selection, M855 isn't 'armor piercing' but it'll relatively reliably hack its way through single-layer brick veneer. I think personally if you hit the more unique structure that makes up a mammal, be it of the 2 or 4 legged variety, most AR bullets traveling within their preferred velocity range will perform as expected without significant overpen issues.....but drywall is not going to reliably turn 5.56 into tumbling dust.

Paul Harrell did a couple of studies on the issue of over penetration of .223 and 5.56 rounds of various bullet design and weight. Safe to say, using an ar-15 for apartment defense or even, depending on how many people live in your house and whether or not you live near others such as in a suburb, home defense is a bad idea and all you're doing is putting other innocent people at risk.
@bigmekboy1754 жыл бұрын
@@jamesbabbath5306 Agreed, the other problems are that they're expensive, have reliability issues if you don't clean them, at short range the bullet doesn't tumble but instead just leaves tiny holes, and they suck as a hunting rifle since the bullets fragment. Everyone bashing Daniel for being a liberal gun owner needs to stop and think for a second. If more liberals start getting into guns then the democratic party would have to drop gun control as part of their platform and then we can start rolling back current gun laws. If you have liberal friends (or any non gun friends in general) that you feel are responsible enough to own a gun, get them into guns. Start off slow with pistols, shotguns, and "featureless" semiauto rifles (an unmodified SKS or similar comes to mind) and then work them up to ARs and AKs with "high capacity" detachable magazines. Show them that modern firearms aren't dangerous or scary and turn them into gun people. This strategy worked wonderfully with some of my family that used to be either non gun people (people that dont care either way), fudds ("no one needs an AR15 or AK47 or more than six shots in a handgun") or anti gun people and now just about everyone in my family has some type of semiauto rifle like an AR, AK, or bubba'd SKS (gotta love my former fudd of an uncle) and the ones that don't at least have a pistol with so called "high capacity" magazines and refuse to vote for people that want to restrict their right to own their guns and magazines.

As a left-hander, I love the AR. He's right, you don't have to take your hand off the grip to load, reload, lock the bolt back, chamber, turn on the optic. I have large hands so I can hit the bolt release with my trigger finger quite easily. My AR is nearly identical to the M4 I trained and deployed with. The only differences are a 16-inch barrel instead of the 14.5 on the M4, the trigger pull is only about 7 pounds instead of 10 and there is no "burst" setting. The longer barrel and lighter trigger pull are improvements over the M4 and I don't even miss the "burst" setting. Neither I, nor anyone I ever fought alongside, ever used it in combat. We seldom ever even used it on the range.

James.. I love your channel and I agree with all of the points in this presentation save one. I believe it’s irresponsible to tell someone that .223 doesn’t go through multiple walls. They do. I run a range for my state and I do training for police and certain federal agencies and I’ve done extensive ballistic testing through various media and I can assure you that unless a round hits something more solid than Sheetrock it is absolutely lethal through MULTIPLE sheets up to four for certain as I have personally witnessed. The likelihood that it would not strike a harder/denser media is low for sure and I think that an AR is indeed a good home defense platform but we should be aware of its liability when making the decision. Just my thoughts. Still a big fan.

I have a question for you @bennett price. How does the different variants of 223/556 rounds effect how they penetrate multiple walls. example being jacketed hollow point or other specialized rounds.

@bennettprice39684 жыл бұрын
Cliff Standley not sure what your question is. A jhp will penetrate multiple walls. I should have been clear because frangible projectiles will break apart far sooner than something like m193 or m855 rounds.

Frank Tank agreed. You can get frangible projectiles to mitigate the over penetration issue

If you want a shotgun for home defense I'd recommend a .410 or .20 with a 18.5in barrel. You want a shorter rifle you can move around your hallways. A .12 will destroy your drywall, studs, electrical wiring, and cause permanent damage to your ears if shot inside a home. The .410 and .20 are also more manageable for smaller people. A shotgun is easier to disarm than a pistol, but accuracy isn't a factor. I would also recommend a flashlight with a strobe effect on the barrel.

I had about five guys call me a start talking like that. If the SHTF I’m coming to your house. I told every one of them no fucking way don’t even think about it. One of them owns guns but has very little ammo. I have been begging him for years to buy ammo but he doesn’t want to spend the money. But he has 5 new cars in his driveway, including a Porsche 911 GT3. Anyway one of the guys calls me up the next day and asks me if I will go to the gun store with him to buy a firearm. So we go to the gun store and stand in line. 2/3rds of the Guns were already gone. Well we got the last SW MP9c in the case. Glocks were gone as were most of the other 9mms. He was able to buy 200 rounds at $25 per box. Serves him right for waiting. At least he “pulled the trigger” on his gun purchase.

@UNSC0110014 жыл бұрын
22lr is really the most ideal imo. Sure it's power is dead last compared to other rounds. But in survival mode, you're not looking to go to war. Common sense suggests your main priority would be to take a defensive stance & hunker down till things blew over. Not looking for a fight but ready for one. You can also backpack with a couple thousand far easier than you could with just hundreds of bigger calibers. And just have shot placement when hunting. Coupled with a suppressor, it's a winner. Everyone talks shit about a 22lr until one is pointed at them.

.223's fragment so reliably that you don't have to worry about overpenetrating your DRYWALL!? Gotta call BS, my friend. Go check out Paul Harrel's dry wall pen tests.
@billmelater64704 жыл бұрын
Not all .223 is the same anymore than 5.56. Fragmentation also depends on the type of round, as well as the velocity. It doesn't just "happen" at any range. Also, light rounds do tend to lose energy fast. If you're worried about dry wall, then don't even use a 9mm becasue that's going to through plenty of walls just fine.
