I understand what you are saying. When I was living in Germany I struggled learning the little German I did learn. My Haus Meister didn't or wouldn't speak English so I had to learn more German. I understood more than I spoke, and could read it better. The German language teacher said that there is nothing written to let you know if the word is masculine, fenmen, or neuter. Plus that verbs is the most important and the hardest words to learn. The word could have different meaning depending on where in the sentence it is placed. I struggle with that a lot and having multiple words for the same word in English. English is mixed up in how it places words in a sentence, so trying to learn a different language that switches where you place the noun and the pronoun and things like that makes it hard.

Absolutely. But maybe when people around you dont speak English it pressures you to learn it faster? The main problem for people in Berlin is you can always revert to English and be fine. Of course, this is no excuse! 😁 We can relate to a lot of your experiences.
