The Top of Wales During a Heatwave? I Think We Should Start Early...

We just had to give this great mountain a crack when we were in Wales, but with six paths to the summit, which one should we choose? In the end we went with the quietest route and ended up having the whole place to ourselves (well, until the summit of course!). So did we make the right choice? And more importantly will we even make it in this UK September heatwave?? Join us on this absolutely beautiful climb...

I don’t pretend to be a travel expert, but I love what I do and would be honoured if you came along with me. My channel focusses on the wide-eyed wonder and excitement of finding somewhere new, and my genuine reaction to it. Thanks for watching, it means a lot to me :)

FAQs:
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature as often as possible, but I'm afraid she has a proper job so it can take weeks for our schedules to match up.
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.
WHY THE ADS?
It's my income, I can't do this for free.
CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I used to list my email address but felt bad not having the capacity to respond to everything so took it down (and I got a LOT of spam so missed many genuine messages along the way).
HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE CHANNEL?
Watching my videos is of course support enough, but if you'd like to support further, I'll pop links below for Paypal and Patreon. All kind donations are super-appreciated and will go 100% towards future filming trips.
DO YOU ACCEPT SPONSORSHIPS?
I don't like to upset the flow of my videos, so I don't even include mid-roll ads anymore (at significant loss of income to myself), so I prefer not to include sponsorships either. I'm open to a small slide at the start/end of each video, but I don't want to get into talking about products, it's something I don't like as a viewer myself (especially as a viewer who pays for KZbin Premium). So it's probably a polite no, although all of this goes out the window if you offer me something which can give me the chance to make a video for my audience that would otherwise be impossible.

Aussie bushwalker here. A good tip for walking in warm weather is to freeze some water i.e. a bottle of water the night before. It will gradually thaw out during the day and will be lovely and cool for quite some time.

Lovely video in weather so uncommon in North Wales. Many decades ago on my first climb up Snowdon, by the dangerous route., the weather closed in so quickly that we dashed down what we thought was the direct route only to end up in Rhydd Dhu, so thank you for showing me what I missed in the clouds!

That looked incredible, if I'd been on that hike, I don't think my camera would have spent much time in the bag, especially when you reached the views of the mist over the mountain tops. Wonderful conditions. Looking at the time you were away, I was also off that week but I spent it in Norway and had a similar mountain hike in roasting conditions. The heat definitely adds an extra challenge to things.

Such a beautiful day for it! I hear you on the crowds that the summit train can provide, but from where I live in the US, the lack of public transit access to the great outdoors can often be disheartening. The idea of a little ride up to the top of the highest peak -- or maybe even taking it halfway so you still get to stretch your legs -- is DREAMY.

The Rhyd Ddu path is one of the best routes up and its also one of the quieter ones! Good choice! I like the fact the railway makes the mountain top accessible for people who couldn't physically walk up, but at the same time a lot of people use it as the lazy option and miss out on so much. The great thing about Snowdonia is that there are a lot of other peaks with views of Yr Wyddfa and non of the crowds. If you think that was busy you should see it at lunchtime on a weekend. There are literally people queuing to take a selfie on the summit

I never in my wildest dreams thought there would be so many people on their way to the top of a mountain 😄 I would like to go back and climb it by another path, but being 74 now, I'm not sure that I am still fit enough. I did the Snowdon horseshoe (via Crib goch and round to Llewedd)a few years ago. From Crib goch to the flank of Snowdon there was hardly anyone about. Then as I approached Snowdon summit it was like walking into a busy supermarket, because of all the people that take the train. It surprised me as well! 100 yards further on from the summit and the rest of the route, it was quiet again.

What a great hike and looks like you chose the right path and the time of day too! I quite like the idea of mountain railways etc to get to summits; yes, it makes it busy but you get facilities and it means those who wouldn’t otherwise see the summit can get there. If you want to see this sort of infrastructure done well, go to Switzerland where there are cable cars / funiculars and mountain railways everywhere :)

...really a worthwhile watch... reminds me of many a tour in the lower alps (where I grew up)... the stony paths can be tricky - an ankle is quickly twisted, if you don't pay attention. The views were majestic, and the weather was with you. A bit sad though that they put the final train stop and cafe right on the top... which could be reserved for aah's and ooh's, admiring the peak without hustle-bustle... it could have been placed just out of sight and noise from the peak... however, sigh... and as it is of course, it allows also people with walking difficulties to have the peak experience! 😎 I still find it sometimes hard to believe, that there are guys cycling down!! 🚲😅

Yep we always put butter on Welsh cakes, same with Bara Brith, we like butter on everything! 🤣Rhyd Ddu path is the perfect path for early September, the trains don't start until 9am so the people passing you probably did a sunrise walk which has been the trend on Instagram for the last few years, you can also descend via the Rangers path and end up back at Rhyd Ddu but it does add 1.5 miles to the walk. I love the railway, but my family are from Llanberis and my uncle used to work on the train so I'm biased, but I took my uncle and my Dad up on the train when they were in their 80's and they absolutely loved it so for me I don't mind one super busy summit with a train just for that, it was actually pretty quiet when you were there, on the very busiest days queues can be over half an hour long for the summit! And one tip I found out the hard way, if holding a camera or walking poles, make sure to put some suntan lotion on the back of your hands too as they burn super fast!

Well done to the pair of you 👍140,000 people use the train on Snowdon annually and 600,000 people in total, reach the summit. I read it's the busiest mountain in the world, with double the numbers of Mount Fuji in Japan. Your route looked more consistent than The Miners in terms of fitness, because the first half of The Miners is so easy, but the second half is a very, very tough slog. You had more ridges which looked more fun and a bit more off piste kind of thing. Wouldn't fancy that on a windy day though lol You also got a completely different perspective from your route. Sadly when I was there in 2018, we had no views at all and I regretted going up tbh! I had booked the train for the descent, but others in my group stopped off at one of the lakes on the Miner's Route for a swim on the way back down to cool off.

If you walk from the other side of the mountain the accent is only 2.5 hours although not in the heat. The PYG track is good as you start from Pen y Gent. The miners track is ok but a climb at the end, tough going. The Watkin path is an easy one but LONG. If I remember correctly four hours. The Llanberis path is the busy one and hard on the feet. I can’t eat welsh cakes without butter. Under here three hours is a good time, you should never rush. I have been on the top able to see your have out stretched but also when the air has been crystal clear. You can see for miles.

About ten years ago, when we lived in North Wales, we walked up Yr Wyddfa with my daughter who is completely blind!! We took the Llanberris Path because we needed a wide route and she did so amazingly well despite blisters she managed all the way up and all the way down which, I agree, was really hard. If I'm honest, it wasn't easy for me either having to guide her, fortunately my partner helped out there. This brought back some 'interesting' memories though!! 😆 Thanks for a great video.

I looked at the mountain railway many years ago and thought the round trip was poor as it only allows 30 minutes at the top of the mountain before you have to come back down again which is not long at all especially if you want to walk around and take in the views maybe even visit the cafe for a drink or bite too eat. After watching this video I visited the snowdon railway site again and the 30 min rule stil exisits after all those years but now they will sell you a single ticket each way. But they state the jorney back down is subject to availabilty and they have no responsibility to get you off the mountain! not great for those people who can not make the journey for whatever reason by foot. The price of a ticket is also extortionate at the time of writting an adult return ticket (with 30 mins at the top) wil cost you £42 and a single with no gaurentee of you getting back down again on the train will cost you £32 each way for an adult

Great vi. I've never done the Rhyd ddu route despite staying in the youth hostel there many times as a kid. Been up 3 routes from Pen y Pass and the railway path from Llanberis. I've come down the ridge you went up but into the saddle between Uy Wydfa and Yr Aran, then down onto the road you stayed on. I'll give this route a go some time.

Just started following you. Great vids. I live about 5 miles from Rhyd Ddu, Diolch (thank you) for making the effort to use the proper Welsh names 👏🏻 perfect pronounciation of Yr Wyddfa and Rhydd Ddu 👍🏻

I managed to get to the summit on my second attempt some forty plus years ag. As I recall the path looked like one of those photos of the White Horse pass during the Klondike gold rush, minus the snow. I’ve thought about the train but like all the Great Little Trains the fares are higher, mile for mile, than a Pullman berth on the Orient Express. I can think of other purposes for fifty quid. Finally, an impertinent question; how come Alicija has to carry the backpack? Great video, as are they all.

kudos on the pronounciations! it's not straighforward..... if people want to call it snowdon instead of yr wyddfa, they can, it's just that the national park is switching to using only the welsh names. there are MANY lovely hills in eryri - why there's such a fascination for yr wyddfa is beyond me - well done for taking the path less travelled

Steve, I really enjoyed this and I know you no longer have the van; but at the end it looked like Alicija had her foot up on the dash. Please ask her not to do that anymore. Irrespective of what kind/class of motor vehicle she or you may be travelling in. I have treated patients in MVA's who had their feet up on the dash, and the deploying airbags can, indeed have, caused devastating and life altering injuries to their lower extremities. That these are easily preventable injuries makes it all the more heartbreaking. Sorry for appearing rude or preachy, but like many people here I genuinely care for your and Alicija's safety.

Great video Steve, really glad you walked down, though you might take the train. Think Alicia is a natural hillwalker, She's right about using poles, being a Munro compleatest myself, wouldn't go on a hill without them. Correct about the boots as well.

Another excellent one Steve, keep them coming. Just for info 2 letter D's together is pronounced "The" Secondly there is no letter V in the Welsh language so 1 letter F is a V and 2 letter F's is an F. Hope you can make some sense of that !

It’s all well and good if you can walk up there but coming down is twice as hard. Me and my son climbed up on the llanberis path in the summer-but coming down was horrendous as I got cramp in my leg just trying to constantly steady myself on the decent. Certainly not an easy walk for sure!

Total admiration for doing that, the ridges would have scared me. I did Cader Idris a bit further south and 'only' c.2900 ft on a geography field trip 50 years ago and that was 'challenging'. You should have tried to find time to do the Welsh Highland Railway you saw near the end, we did it a few years ago and the experience was great. Looking forward to some more of Wales.
