From an aero perspective The Race is usually pretty vague with all their explanation, 50% completely wrong, most of the time not really hitting the point. Remember those guys a journalists accompanied by a guy who designed his last F1 car almost 2 decades ago. Don't be fooled by flashy visualisations. Doesn't make them true if they are pretty. If you want proper aero knowledge watch the channels of KYLE.ENGINEERS or B Sport.

Bravo on the RedBull wishbone breakdown! That was Mi6 level investigation. I definitely agree that it’s going to help a lot with rear downforce they’re basically turning the wishbone into a wing in letting a larger mass of air uninterrupted enter that whole suspension system. They’re going to modify this very little and get major gains over the first half of the year.

@@Bahamuttiamat "Stealing ideas" has always been in the DNA of F1 and no engineer worth his salt has ever denied that you adapt other teams' ideas as soon as you can if they work (and work for your car philosophy). So, yes, in this instance it may have been a Merc idea but that's besides the point.
@SupremeUnicorn
@SupremeUnicorn 3 жыл бұрын
@@AntiVaganza Not sure how it is beside the point since it’s a copy of last year Merc innovation. copying ideas of other teams is part of F1 and have always been. but how can another team outcompete merc if they keep trying to replicate their ideas with a 2 year delay??? while mercedes Innovate, same as Alpine and McLaren we keep seing pink merc, green merc and blue merc.
@AntiVaganza
@AntiVaganza 3 жыл бұрын
@@SupremeUnicorn It was the Merc part of the argument that was besides the point. I read the comment, perhaps wrongly, as coming from a fan and having the tone of Merc is so good RB has to copy it and that's uncool. As said, maybe I read it wrong. Besides that, neither you or I are equipped with the technological skills to judge whether RB should have copied it earlier, should not have copied it or whether it is a straight copy at all - or whether it is improved from Merc's. Basically, while the general idea looks the same, I am not sure we have enough info or knowledge to say it is a replicate. The two cars feature vastly different design philosophies so what may work on the Merc may not work - or may even work better - on a RB. Personally, I am sure that even though they look the same on the surface, there are many intricasies in which a general idea can be tailor made to your own car. You also argue that you can't overtake Merc by simply copying. I agree but you seem to gloss over the fact that the RB and Merc are in their basic nature possibly the two most different cars on the grid - and stealing a general idea for a rear suspension does not make the RB a Merc clone.

Sometimes, I catch myself being so engrossed in The Race's videos and then it hits me: the high-def glory, relevant footage and slick editing reflecting the spoken topic, smooth voice over with condensed scripting which keeps videos on point but never rushed, yet within the 10min mark. The visual brilliance of the technical analysis and breakdown, stuff you can't even get on SkyF1, is ace. The way you visualized the aero elements and the air flow was just excellent. I've always been wishing that someone did a video with those kind of visual aids to help explain the aerodynamics of F1 cars. It's so difficult as a fan to comprehend how these odd shapes and turning vanes and miscellaneous hunks of carbon fiber actually lead to a lower lap time. You remind me of a muscle car owner that sneered at a small engine open wheeler in a track because of all the aero devices. The tech guy casually replied that the open wheeler could lap any muscle car every few laps...

Actually I'm amazed that no one went the Alpine route before. A small compromise in weight distribution with potential aero benefits. Much respect for midfield team for going a completely different route.

The real tech secrets, and advancements are in the electric motors which have a distinctive sound like a Formula E car. Most notably has been Redbull. There may be a engine development freeze but I doubt there is anything prohibiting the upgrading of electric motors, I would be more intrigued with a video illustrating each teams approach to this. Teams like Mercedes do not rely on things like anti-lag because their MGU-H and hybrid power delivery is top notch, where as Honda has traditionally relied heavily on anti-lag since 2014, it seems to have changed this year.

Sooo that RBR/Merc lower rear control arm is just a 1996 toyota front lower arm design. Seriously thats almost exactly the design. A single arm with two mounting points instead of two separate arms on a typical (LASA) A arm suspension. Obviously to do this out of carbon and be aerodynamic is another level. Just funny how stuff comes in goes out then returns again. I love f1 tech so much

As I was watching this I just couldn't help but marvel how far we've come since I started watching F1 in the 1970s. We have internet!

So once again merc seems one step ahead, unbelievable... What about Alfa Romeo and them being constantly in the top 5? Could it be because of low fuel/soft tyres combo or could it be because of their aero improvements?
