Borgward & Lloyd I seem to recall were actually two divisions of the same company. Still a few on the road when I was posted there. I recall hearing that the early Lloyds were nicknamed the 'Leukoplast Bomber' (Band Aid Bomber) because the bodies were made of formed pressed plywood covered in Patent Leather(?). And the later Arabella some called the 'Aquabella' because they had an issue with blowing head gaskets?

Although Stoewer and NSU were founded as manufacturers of sewing machines and the like in 1858 and 1873 respectively, to say that the car companies were founded then is nonsense. Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer got together in 1932 to form Auto Union. By the way, when August Horch sold his original car company he agreed not to go back into business under his own surname: so when he did, he translated it into Latin as Audi (= "listen!").
