I am nearly eighty years old and have ridden bikes all my life. I now have a 1978 Raleigh Grand Prix and I adore it. I bought it used about twelve years ago. It's basic, solid, durable, easy to maintain, acceptably quick but still achingly beautiful. Not bad for the $120 I paid for it!

I'm old. I have deep appreciation for the beautifully lugged frames of the 70's and 80's. That lightweight tubing from Colombus or Reynolds, when paired with Campagnolo Nuovo Record or Shimano Dura-Ace produced the most beautiful bikes ever ridden.

Had an early morning ride (04.30) on the Argos I had built in 1981, Reynolds 531, Brooks B17, Campag hubs (the only original parts now after 60,000 miles). Still my favourite bike, despite a dozen others in the shed. It's a shame how many different gear systems there are today, riders are going to find it difficult to get parts to keep a 2021 bike going for 40 years. And carbon frames; it will be interesting to see how durable they prove to be.

This poor guy. Started about the Raleigh and ended with a sales pitch for Specialized.

I've just restored my Raleigh 531c that I bought in 1985 for time trials. I was thinking about buying a new carbon bike, but looked at my old rusty one that's been hanging up on the garage wall for years and thought I don't need to save seconds anymore. Stripped it down took the frame to Argos Racing cycles and it came back as new. Rebuilt it and went out for a great ride yesterday and very pleased at having saved at least £3k . I'm 76 and still love cycling.

My first road bike was a Carlton Corsa Strada, Metalic Green / Brown colour, Campag gears and Centre pull breaks. My pride and joy, wish I still had it.

I really miss mine. Best bike I have ever ridden. I have been riding since the early seventies, so I have owned a lot of bikes. Mine had a complete Dura-Ace 6 speed friction shifting wonder. All the components came in a nice box with cut outs for each component. Everything, hubs, cranks , etc. I would love to find another one someday.

Joop still has his tour winning bike

Joop held the perfect record for finishing all TDFs he entered ....for decades... I cant remember if it was Hincape who broke the record with 17 completions.. Joop entered and finished 16 and won once. He also held the record for the most second place TDF finishes ! Amazing ! He is one of the sports most under appreciated Champions. He was a hero of mine in the day.

Is this video about a vintage bike or carbon fiber because I just lost 5 minutes of my life with the same carbon fiber fashion bike trash.

Thought the same pal, title is miss leading, they never went in depth about this gorgeous old Raleigh, that modern shite deserves no comparison as it's utterly 👎 🚾 🏴☠ 💩💩

Last forevermore the old steel bikes!! Far more durable and they were hand crafted with pride!. Today's bikes won't last 40 years for sure!.

I bought the 753 frame and built it with full Dura-ace EX group set, cinelli bars and stem, Mavic rims. Can't remember the saddle (not brooks) or rubs.
@langh7142 жыл бұрын
I built a 753 to original 1977 spec and a 531 frame with some subtle modernisations (including modern 11-speed groupset and hidden Di2 😁) ... one thing I can say about these frames, they may be a bit heavier, but they ride so smoothly. I have modern Look 695 & Cervelo P5 but the Raleigh 531 is the first choice (so long as it isn't raining).

I had the cheaper consumer model as a kid, i loved that bike, I rode it everywhere, even today I still search out information on the iconic raleigh machine. I am always saddened by the cheap crap that bears the raleigh name these days.

Me too, Europa I think it was called. Agree, from winning the TdF to badge engineered junk how far the Raleigh name has fallen.

Lovely bike but it has a USA safety spec rear derailleur, so that shouldn't be on there, wasn't a Cinelli saddle fitted on these ? The Cinelli 1R stem looks out of place too, only seen Cinelli 1A fitted...... I take it well on board that not everything can stay original over the years.

I have two steel framed bikes, and one Wielier Triestina carbon bike. The steel bikes are more comfortable to ride.

I have a '79 and an '80. They are very different from one another, being hand made by different builders. The modern replica is a bit of a disappointment.
@Free_Ranger_CT1106 ай бұрын
Recently watched an unboxing of the 'replica' disgraceful money grabbing stunt for a poor copy. They aren't cheap & anyone who is willing to pay that kind of money knows the difference between real & fake.

Modern top end bikes are fantastic things but ugly to an old codger like myself, a retro steel bike has such simple elegance, of course a young pup will think the opposite.

Yeah and along came disc brakes now the bikes are heavier than 15 years ago no thanks
