As much as Federer had his backhand troubles against Nadal, the final exposes how Nadal’s backhand was (still is, to some extent) also quite vulnerable to high topspin balls. It was especially pronounced in that match because Roger peppered it.

Amazing to me, it seems like all the matches Federer truly attacked the Duece court VS Rafa he had success. It's like he forgets and resorts to the crosscourt rally with the backhand and gets humiliated... How many matches has he lost this way when he has to overcompensate with his forehand and makes the error? How many of you believe that the backhand down the line is the most underrated play in Tennis? Especially against Lefties. People playing percentage tennis Crosscourt all day need to spice things up!

Nadal had a gruelling four hour match against Djokovic and Federer was as fresh as a daisy and injury free . This isn’t taking anything away from what a great player Federer is, but a fit and fresh Nadal would have beat him !
@phillyortho
@phillyortho 5 жыл бұрын
Nadal doesn't need to be fresh and fit to play well. Just look at the 2009 Aussie Open. This was the match where Fed changed his strategy against Nadal. Took a risk and changed direction of the ball to the backhand to not allow Rafa to run around and direct the point with his forehand. Attack the backhand to open up the court and then hit hard inside out forehands into open court to get Rafa in trouble. He went down the line with his backhand a lot which is a riskier shot and stopped slicing on the backhand. He's been using the strategy now and has a 6 match win streak vs Nadal now. Tbf, a lot of time during a Rafa or Djokovic match is just ball bouncing before the serve.

@robertofenloch9595
@robertofenloch9595 5 жыл бұрын
Blake and Roddick were horrendous on clay, Soderling didn't find a career until the French Open a few weeks later, and DelPo didn't find a career until the US Open a few months later. So the victory isn't even nearly as incredible as it sounds. Also, I don't believe 2008 & 2009 were close to being his worst. Statistically speaking, 2013-2016 were his worst, having not won a slam between 2012 Wimbledon and 2017 AO, missing half the year in 2016, and won only 3 Masters titles during that span, even allowing Andy Murray to get to world #1. Heck, he only won 1 title period in 2013; 2013 being one of his worst ever years. In 2013, he lost to Murray at AO (which ironically was funny because Federer was the reason Murray doesn't own 3 of the 4 slams, and he finally beats Fed down under and still loses in the final), Benneteau at Rotterdam, Berdych at Dubai after having match points, Nadal at Indian Wells, Nishikori at Madrid, Nadal at Rome, Tsonga at the FO, Stakhovsky at Wimbledon (I also believe this was the year both Nadal and Federer lost in the first 3 days), Delbonis at Hamburg, Brands at Gstaad (yes, he lost to frickin' Daniel Brands in two easy sets), Nadal at Cincinnati, ROBREDO!!!! at the US Open, Monfils at Shanghai, DelPo at Basel, Djokovic at Paris, and Djokovic & Nadal at the ATP Finals. He played much better the following two years, but even then, his losses included Hewitt, Nishikori, Wawrinka, Chardy, Gulbis, Raonic, Seppi, Ramos-Vinolas, Kyrgios, Isner, and Tsonga and a horrifically played loss to Cilic at the US Open.

2009 wasn't easy for Roger tho, a lot of very tough matches that he could've lost. Match against Haas at RG should've lost but fought brilliantly to come back. Match against Roddick in Wimby final Roddick was so close to winning and imo was playing the more inspired tennis, but Federer scraped the win. 2009 could've been a tough year for Federer, had those matches not gone his way.

Actually 2008 was the worst because before 2008 he knows nothing but back to back victories at Grand Slam except the French Open and had 12 Slams at the age of 26, something literally no one has ever achieved before. When everyone was a one surface player Fed was a dominating force and favorite even on clay if not for Nadal brilliance on clay. But in 2008 he literally lost all 2 GS finals and only won against a young Murray on the rise. He then lost 2009 final to Nadal again and that was the turning point where his mentality finally broke when he smashed the racquet and made numerous unforced errors. He then gained back some confidence after winning the FO and Wimbledon and Australian Open final before the expected rise of Djokovic- Nadal and Murray for the next couple of years except for the 2012 title. He managed to several semis and finals but still could not hold his own against the young, dominant and consistent forms of Nadal and Djokovic. Sure he played badly in, 2011, 2013 and 2016 but that was when Djokovic and Nadal were at the peak of their tennis but 2008 was the turning point of his career when he clearly lost his confidence and consistency to win games or for even comeback when he was behind. That is up until 2017 continuing to the present time lol

@GTS I guess when you are Federer...that's bad? He won the USA Open that year didn't he? I think what they meant was he lost three finals to Rafa FO,Wimby 2008 Aussie 2009. So it really liked like a big power shift had occurred. Let's face it Roger did not expect to win the F.O. ever...Then Soderling gave him his wish! Had Rafa have stayed fit he would have won the F.O. and Wimby 2009 I think. Was that the year Del Potro beat Roger in the USO? He has never won the USO since 2008??? Amazing!

im a nadal fan, but federer deserved so much more on clay. And when nadal went injured, federer sustained the only competitive challenge to djokovics reign of dominance, losing only narrowly in finals to djokovic. federer was the player who stopped djokovic's unprecedented 50 odd match winning streak, beating him of all places at the french open in the semis. federer would go on to lose to nadal in final, but i consider federer's defeat of a peak inform djokovic at the french open his greatest accomplishment. these are important feats to defend federer's greatness, to show federer can beat in form djokovic and nadal on the day, because if you take the period since nadal djokovic murray and stan have been around, nadal has won fourtten grand slams, djokovic has won twelve, and federer has won much less, something like six i believe. .

You are forgetting one thing. Both the RG and Wimbi 2008 finals were played while Federer was recovering from mono (especially RG). Making the finals is in itself an astonishing achievement (Soderling himself never recovered). RG final aside, he just narrowly got edged by a peaking Rafa (in Wimbi 08, AO 09). After 4-5 years of dominance, it was expected.

As much as I want to say Federer is the greatest player of all time, I can't. Regardless of how many slams Federer, Nadal and Djokovic win, it's impossible to definitively say who is greatest due to huge number of perspectives, variables and events that have taken place over their careers. I am more than happy to say that each of them are the greatest players in tennis history and it may be a while before we see this type of tennis dominance again.

It's not the titles only. What he has done for the game is never to be repeated, he re-wrote the tennis books regarding shot-making or what is possible in terms of ageing. Tennis greats like Laver, Lendl, Borg, Sampras, Agassi, Nadal, Djokovic, all agree that he is the greatest. That being said ... let's all be quiet now cause the Maestro is still out there performing.

Not to excuse Nadal but he came from a 4 hour long excruciating match against Novak who back then was playing great. If you play tennis you'd know how taxing it is to play a hard match the day before vs playing an easy/short two setter... Also, Madrid is the worst clay tournament for Nadal because it's 800 meters above sea level and turns into the fastest clay court (they tried everything there to slow down the court for Nadal...) That being said, Federer played great and deserved the win.
