As a former volunteer firefighter I can tell you that there were 2 scenarios of a structure fire that I feared the most. First in a basement or sub-level and second as depicted in this film a high rise building. Bad situations for firefighters and any victims trapped and needing to be rescued!!

The burning ceiling collapsing on those firefighters was filmed very well. That scene's probably as close to the real thing as Hollywood can get, especially in this movie. I've been a firefighter for 15+ years, and have to say that this scene still gives me chills when I see it. Burning floors/ceilings/roofs that suddenly collapse without warning, DO happen in real life, and most times you don't even know what hit you until after it's already happened.

I was in 7th grade when this came out, and my classmates and I were talking about how cool it was. A teacher who thought he was cool overheard us and interrupted, telling us how it was not a creative film. We all looked at each other not saying a word but all thinking “go away, Mr. Koenig, this doesn’t concern you.” He read our faces like a book, though. It was beautiful. A bunch of 12 year olds just told you to get lost, so go bother the 6th graders. We’re talking Steve McQueen here!

Elevators at that time had buttons on the floors that were activated by heat from your fingertip, so there was nothing to wear out. That's why an elevator would go to the fire floor. There is also an electric eye in an elevator to prevent the door from closing when the beam is blocked, the smoke would block the beam, but the door close button would override it. But people panic, Next time an elevator door is closing, don't grab it, just pass your arm up and down in the gap and the door will open. Some elevators had a hidden express function that could be activated by holding the ground floor button, the elevator would not stop. We get alarms from hotels and the front desk will be waiting with the elevator fire key so we can use the elevator.

There's a reason for that. This is a real building which they use stock footage of at night. It's the Sacramento Bank of America just with fire and a couple of extra floors added so it goes off frame. Even the shot to the building before the ceiling collapsing explosion was stock footage of the Bank but with some CGI added in for the boom. Al other shots are staged in outside of Universal in a car park to the point that the explosion that killed Lisolette later in the movie set some trees on fire.

At the time the movie was made we didn't have the knowledge about fire safety and emergency procedures as we do now. (I was 13 when TTI was released.) I don't recall anyone saying anything about it but I think "The Towering Inferno" was made not only to entertain but to educate. This movie provides information that can help people save their lives in a fire. I've read that there was at least one city that changed its fire codes because of "The Towering Inferno".

We had a mini “towering inferno” in our 20-floor condo back in 2015 when the airwell-facing bedroom of one unit caught fire and it was scary to see the smoke rising up while the fire alarm was blaring all the way… And with today’s fire guidelines, our condo’s three elevators all automatically went to the ground floor while we residents took the staircase down… While the local firemen took the fire elevator to the affected floor and successfully put the fire out - and the tenant got into big trouble too, because it was a short-circuited plug that started the mess (he put four heavily-used multiple sockets all connected to one plug!)…

There's another good line by William Holden to Chamberlain in an earlier scene, after Holden is ordered by Steve McQueen to move everybody out of the promenade room because of the fire. He takes Chamberlain aside and asks him, "Did you mess with the electrical system?" to which Chamberlain replies, "I certainly did," and Holden asks, "Why?" Chamberlain responds "The reasons should be obvious to you" (meaning cutting construction costs). Holden then says, "Well, we've got a fire in the building, and if it's because of anything you did, I'm gonna hang you out to dry, then I'm gonna hang you!!" That is what prompts the later scene, when Chamberlain says, "I don't like the way you talked to me!" and Holden replies with the line quoted by GreenerHill. Later on, after they evacuated all the women from the promenade room with the breecher's buoy running from the tower to the roof of a nearby building, Chamberlain then confronts Holden with some other men and threatens to take control of the breecher's buoy so they can leave ahead of the others. Then Holden punches Chamberlain, throws him against a wall, and says to the others, "You've got numbers, and you're gonna take your turns! And if it's any consolation, my son-in-law and I are gonna be the last ones outta here!" I loved the way Holden manhandled Chamberlain in that scene!

Revisited this clip after a small fire in our office caused by an exploding cell phone battery on its charger. 33rd floor of the tallest building in my city. Caused full evac and FD response. Battery was tossed in bin and into janitor closet smoke sink- still gave off enough smoke to activate alarms in 2 areas and the smoke odor is still in the office 2 days later.

I agree. My boyfriend's best friend's dad was killed in a house fire last year and it was so preventable. His parents had no smoke detectors in the home and the fire happened overnight, so they actually both would have died if it hadn't been for their cat waking them up. The mom immediately ran out of the house and went to a neighbor to call for help, but the dad stayed behind and attempted to fight the fire (and no, he was not a trained firefighter), and that's how he died. I mean, I get not wanting your home to get destroyed and wanting to put out the fire as soon as possible, but it's not worth losing your life. Get out of the house and leave it to the professionals!

2:26 is a very clever touch. We've all decided that Simmons is to blame, but this implies strongly that Duncan, in general a better person, has also seen fit to throw safety to the winds. Duncan of course proves the better man when the shit hits the fan, but even Doug gives him a hard time over his role.

Roberts emphasizes Duncan's role in the disaster later in the film when he tells Duncan about all the missing safety equipment throughout the building which Simmons had nothing to do with (duct holes between the floors didn't have firestops, no fire doors, sprinklers that don't work, etc). Simmons's cheap wiring may have started the fire, but Duncan's cutting corners elsewhere in the building definitely helped the fire along. Roberts even blamed himself for not being thorough enough with his inspections.

In real life, Duncan propably should end in jail. Newmans architect had a largest role that should had, because architects had nothing to do with wiring and other stuff related with the work of Simmons. I think the Roberts character should be written as an engineer instead of an architect.

The occultists love their dates and numbers. They often release movies on May Day or the 13th of a month, 911 is a big date, hence the three trade center towers being blown up, George Bush senior even gave his new world order speeches on 9/11/1990 and 9/11/1991, 10 years to the day before 911. Hollywood is run by occultists, so no surprise to me if the photography ended on September 11th. Most people are ignorant to it all, so it's either considered bizarre or a refutable joke.

Also, the book that this film was based on featured the World Trade Center being right next door to this building... AND being used as a place for helicopters to land rescued people to safety. In addition, guess which floor was the floor where the nose of the second plane hit Tower 2 on 9/11? The 81st! Furthermore, in 1975, Tower 1 suffered a small fire on one of the lower floors due to arson. The arsonist claimed that this movie was his inspiration for setting the fire.

@@mr.adventure0142 I love this movie, a lot of pyrotechnics would have been involved and of course models for the tower itself, except the entrance on the street bit that was a bank apparently. The 70’s terrible decade, terrible fashions, a love affair with brown but great music, tv was great and it was the era of great disaster movies like this one.

The London tower fire, the WTC fire, these were major fires where people were told to stay inside. There have been other high rise buildings where all floors above the fire line have been suffocated in smoke. I think we need to also use self judgment: is the smoke going downstairs too thick ? Maybe stay inside and hope for help. But if you are sure you can go downstairs without getting trapped in smoke, then go out as fast as possible. Countless lives could have been saved in WTC and in the London tower if people weren't listening blindly. Remember: in a high rise building, the fire workers will have to climb up all the stairs and once up at the fire line, they can do just as much as their mobile equipment can do.

It was the same in the World Trade Center. General policy was to evacuate only the 2 floors above and one floor below the fire. But in a major fire the only safe way is to evacuate every floor in a high rise building.

The reason is that Grenfell and 9\11 were exceptions to the usual way high rise towers work. In most, the fires are easily contained and people can be rescued at thier leisure. In 9\11, I doubt anyone thought "we should tell everyone to leave because the building will fall like a sack of bricks." Also, most if not all of the doors were warped by the force of the impact and were unopenable anyway which is why, for example, people were trapped on the 46th floor of the North Tower and still ended up dying despite there being a perfectly usable staircase. In the case of Grenfell, the fire service was completely unaware of it's appalling insulation which spread the fire and it was already too late by the time that they realised that something was up. The fridge freezer that began it was out our but it spread out the window, along the outside of the building, and into the rooms before they could stop it. Was fully involved before support arrived. That's why is exists although I agree that it should be situational, not protocol.

stairwell doesnt have the capacity for too many to evacuate simultaneously, often there is only one stairwell, consequently such high rise buildings are unsafe

@@Satters When they finally got the order to evacuate, the people in WTC went down by hundreds calmly down the very tight stairwells. It is very doable, as long as there is no smoke or building damage. But I entirely agree with you, no matter the safety systems, very tall high rise buildings are death traps in large fire events / bombing or plane crashes. There is simply to rescue system designed for tall buildings, the roof is often times not ready for heli landing and especially the high winds and possible smoke rising cut off any such rescue attempt.

To answer a poster's question from several years ago--Holden pushes the elevator button, desperately trying to stop the elevator that several people entered in haste. The elevator (naturally) stops on the fire floor, backdraft pulls the fire into the elevator, and as a result of Holden pushing the button, the elevator, full of burning bodies, returns to the promenade level

davidpar2 why would the elevator stop on a fire floor, especially if they locked out all floor calls? Even if the fire shorted the call button on the floor, the elevator should ignore it... but I guess these are the old relay style elevators.

neonhomer Just for effect. Like in Earthquake at the reservoir dam. The caretaker in the elevator drowns and, his assistant pushes the call button and a torrent of water and the caretakers body floats out.

@@neonhomer at least on elevators I've seen, where there's a fault in moving the car, but the car has acknowledged that it has stopped at a floor and not between floors, the doors open so as to free the occupants. I remember seeing elevators with this function, even modern 21st century one's after I'd seen this movie and thought how crazy it was because things would happen exactly as they did in the film. Of course I'm in the UK, the USA might have different design protocols.

I knew someone who survived an office tower fire in Brazil (I think it was in Sao Paolo), possible started when a xerox machine overheated. He escaped by climbing down the side of the building. It was designed with ledges on the exterior that you could hold on to.

tpsu129: At this point he was just an actor, his character saves the Lisolettes cat's life too as he sees her on the bed and picks her up. The same room is seen later on fire, so the cat would of burnt to death had he not done that. It's a shame really that he became a killer, he was nice looking and great in the Naked Gun movies too.

Saw this in theaters When Earthquake was in the next theater. This was when the tried to simulate the Earthquake with loud speakers, so everyone once in a while our theater would shake. We called it "Shake and Bake"
