I live locally to the west end of this line and only today discovered the embankment and a surviving bridge abutment at Semington. The abutment is on the east side of the road and not easily seen as it’s behind a solid barrier. You can get a better view by scrambling up the embankment on the west side of the road. You can also see the embankment clearly from the driveway to the Air Ambulance Station.

Brilliant Video! loving seeing some of the GWR Class 800s passing by as well! There was something announced about Devizes that it made the first round of the Beeching Reversal Fund that the Railway could be reinstated but via Lydeway, so there could be a Railway at Devizes in the future as long as it passes the next rounds, as for 0:33 I was like that when I went to my local station on the 13th May, all happy and smiling when I returned to my local station, remember walking across the footbridge and just yelled 'I (Bleeping) miss this!'

Another fascinating video about a very little-known line. I liked your lockdown video on the Strathspey railway in Scotland and hope you do some more of these but getting out and seeing the real thing is much more satisfying. For over two months I have been doing my daily exercise from my home. But now the lockdown has become increasingly frayed and it is clear that our lords and masters believe that there is one rule for them and another for us. I finally gave up on Bank Holiday Monday and drove to a quieter corner of the Quantocks at the other side of the county where I live, for a different walk. I did think long and hard before I finally picked up the car keys! I shall have a look to see if you have done a video on the Somerset Coal canal as there are quite a number of significant artefacts. Keep exploring and stay safe!

Enjoyed a visit to Devizes and the canal locks two years back. The Branch from Patney & Chirton was still intact but closed when I first worked on trains between Reading and Westbury from 1965. Likewise The opposite junction at Holt on the Swindon To Westbury line was still obvious when we worked trains that way too and from Taunton, via Trowbridge and Westbury. Wooton Rivers station was also still in tact as was Savernak lower station and the branch to Marlborough.

Glad to see you two out and about again! I love that view from on top of that hill, I have nothing like that where I live, it's all flat, and to the north it's just water (Lake Ontario). So that entire line was shut down in 1966, was it really losing so much money that nothing could be done to improve it? Seems a shame, all those villages becoming isolated, all those businesses losing access to their vendors and customers. They all had to go out and buy cars and trucks which meant millions spent on roads, petrol that had to be transported and stored etc. They are just as isolated and the businesses are gone so people move out. Doesn't seem to me that anything was improved?

I also live in the Barry area and used to drive up the Taff Vale a lot for work. So much incredible history. There are disused railways heading north from the cement works at Aberthaw (a very, very early railway, you will maybe remember the old bridge pillars on the St Athan Road near the river which were demolished recently by Griffiths during roadworks?) and the unmistakable Penarth branch from Cogan to Cadoxton, for which the cutting and bridges still exist. Developers in Cosmeston are looking to reopen the railway cutting now as a pathway to Penarth Station. We're privileged to live in an area with such a dense, rich railway history. Just a shame there's not much left running today. Edit - The other thing that's fascinating to me, and it's a shame almost none of it remains, is the sheer size of the Barry and Taff Vale railway yards that ran something like 14 tracks wide between the Docks Offices and Cadoxton station before the junction of the same name. A lot of evidence of the Victorian infrastructure is still lying around the existing two tracks.

The route Paddington - Reading - Newbury - Devizes - Bath - Bristol was the shortest, but by no means the quickest, route between Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads. A number of London to Bristol trains ran daily over the Devizes branch, and in 1959 when these expresses were finally taken off, there were three each way daily. Pans Lane Halt did not close with the other stations on the line. It was built solely to serve an isolation hospital outside Devizes and closed when the hospital closed in 1941.

An interesting fact (possibly the only one) about Patney & Chirton station: It's located on the edge of the village of Patney. I dare not show this to my wife. The only places she has been to for months are (a) hospital car parks and (b) the inside of a few deserted spaces inside the hospital. X-ray and blood test rooms, where a few masked and covered polite and gracious attendants sorted her and sent her on her way. Another exciting hospital event next week. Somehow, your chance to walk through the sunlit open lands is far more appealing. Now, with all the brou-ha-ha about global warming, I wonder if sweeping the infrastructure aside, and not just closing its use till the wind changed, might have been such a wise turn of events
