The toxic London Smog of 1952

The Great Smog of 1952 descended upon the city of London like a shroud of darkness, weaving itself into the very fabric of daily life. The fog, thick and suffocating, settled over the city for five days, from December 5 to December 9. This event was triggered by a mix of industrial pollution and high-pressure weather conditions.

Excellent stuff, as ever. I really look forward to your broadcasts. My mother (who is 95 now) remembers both the smog and Christie case very well. Ironically, my Dad played a policeman in the film "10 Rillington Place", and Mrs. Evans and her baby were both buried in a cemetery just across the road from where I lived as a child.

The smog got so bad that blind people were helping sighted people to get home in an evening. As you mentioned smog in London was called a "pea souper" and in return pea soup was called London particular.
