"It was an opera house that normalized professional abuse and misconduct." Australian mezzo-soprano Katharine Tier worked at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe (Germany) for almost ten years. The meanwhile dismissed intendant Peter Spuhler established a toxic working environment full of sexism, misongyny and dehumanization. In the interview Kate describes how she felt sicker and sicker and struggled with depression and eating disorders. Suffering from burnout she decided to leave Europe and recover in her new home Tasmania - far from the sickening opera world.

Thank you, dear Katharine Tier, for your immense sensitivity and strength in this interview! Speaking of the opera house: a place, where civil courage and character is treated as a problem, cannot by any means foster culture on the long run. I hope you found a way for you to pray without a temple or a temple worthy of the prayer❤️

This is absolutely heartbreaking to hear! I'm sorry for you and anyone who had or has to go through this. I studied in Karlsruhe and was part of their extended opera choir for a while and the atmosphere there was crushing. Many choir singers seemed to be angry and frustrated - and after my time there the former choir director committed suicide on stage in front of his former choir... that was the ultimate shock for me. I feel like the theater must have had problems for a long time, possibly decades before - but it's still a mystery to me how it can come to this. And again, I'm so sad to hear all this, my heart goes out to all affected by such environments.

So important to speak about it! If we all stand up for ourselves and for our colleagues, the enviroment will change. We must do that, because directors and conductors will not give up of their privilegies to threat us badly. Thanks for open it. Am sending also all the posivite energy you need! =)

I'm not a professional singer but it's so important to know for everyone what's happening behind stage. Kudos to Katherine Tier for speaking so frankly about it. And, yes, go to Tasmania if you feel stressed, take a break whenever it's possible, and love yourself as Katherine said, so that you don't allow people to mistreat/abuse you.

Dear Kate, thank you so much for your words in this interview. So important for everyone in the classical music industry. I also get criticized for Ausbrüche exactly like the ones you described! I wish you all the best.

that's reality in the industry! Already the word industry when it should be all about art says a lot! I did work mostly in first class theaters and I experenced very similar things.

How much do I understand this lady. I am reviewing myself so much into her description. What I can say is that what she mentioned it is sadly true and I were in her shoes so many times. Thank you for sharing this experience. I thought maybe it was my feeling but it seems I am not the only one who wanted in the end to escape from this "whatever you call it", yet no art.

exactly 2 more colleagues were treated very bad from him. i stood up and said sth. that helped me I think. and it was the most beautiful voice on stage a young korean soprano. he blamed her not being engaged on stage. and she sang out every time what brought her to vocal disorder. she had to stop for several months

I love the art form of Opera but it seems that the people that run it, like the directors and Impresarios, are conspiring to kill opera. Joseph Shore, a retired singer talks about this very thing stating that many directors and Impresarios have NO IDEA about the art form or singing and are extremely insecure. And the moment they feel that their authority is being questioned they just lash out because they're offended. Gottfried Wagner, the great grand son of Richard Wagner stated and I quote " I love the art form of opera, but I can't stand the environment of opera!!! Opera is controlled by these terrible, low, ignorant, hostile, even vile people!!! So there for I have removed myself from the environment of opera" And unfortunately Ms Katharine Tier, like many other wonderful singers, fell victim of this misfortune. This is probably the reason I'm doing Musical Theater. Mind you it's not perfect there either but I'm just happier.

Yesterday was World Opera Day, and I kept thinking about how the industry is cliquish, incestuous, often toxic and full of antiquated businesses practices that exist in detriment to the art form and its practitioners. I walked away from the industry last year, and I don't regret it one bit.

its not about political correctness when I say: It is a world in which women are tolerated but do not want to be seen ... not the boops, hips and not a bit of fat. Theatre has become a shop in which men - and let's say it: often gay men - help each other, find jobs for themselves, secure money, secure the fun in their bed and work off their childhood on educated people in public. The reason for youth mania is not only because they are cheap but because they keep their mouth shut until they are 40, the same applies to foreigners who do not know their rights sufficiently, have left their homeland and have put a lot at risk. And Karlsruhe: Everything spoke against the director, but a politician (Grüne ), his buddy from old times gave him another contract for his misconduct ....nobody talks about that fact.- she was not punished for it, although the grievances had long been spoken out loud and the entire workforce was almost running amok. And wait, people! We'll find the names again, they keep getting jobs...sooner or later. Only singers should look for a new profession after 5-10-15 years of work....
