this is so sad to see, i went around the Island of Ireland in my model 3 LFP RWD about a month ago, stopped at all superchargers , coming in low and warm (learned that from you :) was getting 180ish max and still pulling 60-70 up at 90% on a v3 in galway, (staying long as the next supercharger was belfast and all 50kw DC between) total trip 13 hours, 1048km (thats a lot for ireland BTW). wouldn't like to do the same in the BZ4x, and using our countries public charging system (ESB) is worse than EA. love your videos Kyle, keep it up , and yes, you don't need wisdom teeth, you're clever enough already :)

Toyota EV planning checklist: - make it one of the slowest charging EVs at launch. - give it the least range. - make it among the slowest EVs - give it no frunk. - don't even give it a glovebox. - put guages in awkward location - give it hideous black cladding - keep price inline with the best EVs.

Their stuff doesn’t break because it’s tried and true before they release it. This car will probably do what they say it will, it’s just got few needed features because of their cautiousness. 5-7 years from now it’ll probably be like everyone else is currently lol I would have thought it would have been a little better though. I completely agree this car is unsuitable for roadtripping, or long drives where you may be in a rush. BUT....... the target audience for this thing, it's pretty dang good. Think of those people who drive to work and back daily, in their Venza, Highlander or Avalon. They may go on road trips, but THEY don't drive, they're the passenger. For someone who wants to keep their car for 10-15 years, and switch to Electric, this is a great car. All those nannies, like limiting DC charging, having a HUGE buffer, slow AC charging will all help longevity. Mark my words, these first gen Bz4xasdf's will have the lowest degradation out of any EV at 10 years, guaranteed. Thats what Toyota is all about, reliability over whats new/fashionable/trendy.

I have a 2024 of this vehicle and it charges real fast. They changed quite a bit in the vehicle between the two years. Unfortunately to the 2023 year owners there were hardware changes made that a software update will not fix. But I find that I can get my charging speed easily up in the 100 kWh most of the time when I am DC charging on the right charger. I can go from a 5% battery to a completely full battery in 45 minutes approximately. So Toyota has worked on this issue a lot. So now they need to release some of the buffer so we can get more mileage out of the battery.

Now you are talking Kyle. 0-100% curve doesn't mean anything, charging speed doesn't mean anything, it's all about how many miles I can regain during my 15 min pit stop. Take Aptera for example, it charges only at 50KW, but because it's soooooo efficient, 15 min would regain around 150 miles. And since it only need 50KW charger, all of a sudden my charging options are greatly extended, sometimes even a level 2 would do. I think this 15 min charging test is what matters the most for those serious mileage eaters.
@Snerdles
@Snerdles Жыл бұрын
I also really like the 15 minute charge test. I regularly stop for 10-12 minutes and pop my PHEV on a little level 2 charger because they are slightly cheaper than gas and I may as well since almost no one else uses them. What I am waiting for is an EV that you can drive a 3 mile leg at highway speed in 15 minutes. That would be the point I feel like charging on a long trip no longer is an issue and you'll usually stop in that time somewhere anyway. Most seem to be nowhere near that level though.

Weirdly, the Chevy Bolt also does not have a percentage display (at least not in the 2020 models). It's miles/km of range only. But the Bolt doesn't really claim to be a road tripper. And it's a whole lot cheaper than the BZ4X. And you can road trip in it if you are patient because its slow DCFC speeds at least maintain their glacial pace as many times as you want to do it daily (the BZ4X only allows a specific amount of DCFC in a day, then it throttles down to well below 20kW).

Well, you drive miles, not percents. So a miles remaining display is probably more useful in most situations. I can understand that seeing a % display may be reassuring, but it's also sort of a lie, because as Kyle showed, the vehicle tells itself one charge %, but tells the user a different one. And this is standard practice, similar to how gas gauges read "empty" before the tank is actually empty.

The ability to reduce charging power allows to use lower cost charging brackets. For example with Electrify Canada If the setting is at MAX I will pay the rate of charging costs for 100kW charging even though it will not go much above 70kW charging. It’s funny to think that a Bolt might perform better in this test using a 2017 model year design than a brand new design from Toyota. Charging speed is very similar but the Bolt would be more efficient. I’ve seen more of these driving around AND sitting at EA stations than Ioniq5s. I really just have to feel that the people who are buying these only bought them because they’re a Toyota/Subaru and did literally zero research.

The real world performance of 800 Volts is amazing and Hyundai group the only company near Tesla or BYD. Since May 2022 I own the Kia EV6 AWD with measured 333 PS and 608 Nm torque after owning 54 years mostly German and European ‚Premium‘ also once had a crap of Pontiac and Mustang but my Life was important to me driving fast and also on tracks that are fit with real curves. The worlds #1 head of BMW M-Sports Albert Biermann was responsible for the drivetrain. The battery is communicated with 77,4 kWh but net and has in fact 87 kWh brut, so degradation will not show soon. Nothing they promise that they cannot deliver e.g. 0-100 km/h in 5,2 seconds but mine makes 5,0! 10% to 80% SoC at over 240 kW and really in 18 minutes at working 350 kW HPC charger. However only Tesla chargers at the moment are reliable and deliver!😂 Range in Eco mode, 21°C interior and 23°C outside with soft throttle is up to real 500 km on highways and mountain roads of Switzerland. Consumption is lowest in its class for me with 17,4 kW per 100 km. An EQE or Q4 e-Tron uses 23 to 24 kW for the same. Only Teslas can be driven that way so far, not even BYD, Aiways or MG/SAIC nor all the smaller cars from Stellantis I have been testing. One year and not one single problem, next updates OTA also. So it’s only that most people still wait for enough cars. Production hell as per Elon Musk😜

Thanks, Kyle! 4:50 I don't recall you running AC in the previous 10% tests, and I guess I'm not sure why you would do it. To me, a 15-minute stop on a road trip represents a rest or bathroom break, where you typically turn off the car, plug it in, and walk away. It also adds an incontrollable element, where different cars will be impacted differently based on the current conditions at the time of the test.

I think this test makes sense although I think 15 mins is more a quick break. Lunch would take more like 30mins. I really wish you'd change the full highway range tests to stop at zero percent rather than running them past that down to dead battery. My reasoning is zero percent is where the manufacturer says the pack is empty - therefore that's the actual range as calculated for EPA or WLTP. Drivers aren't typically going to run their cars all the way to zero let alone past that. There is value in completely draining the pack but only to inform drivers of their emergency range.

The bZ has a max charge capacity of 150kWh (to protect the battery and provide longevity), so at that level it can't 'compete' with the charging speed of Tesla and Porche. So, if you charge the Toyota under your test conditions for one hour to equate to the average of the others, the Toyota would travel 168 miles, beating both the others on distance covered. Also in 5 years time which car do you think will have minimal battery degradation. And btw I have owned a bZ4x since December 2022, I too am disappointed with the energy performance. i'm waiting on the software update.

Based on the naming, the styling, the feature set, the pricing, and the total lack of marketing, not to mention all the things the CEO has said, and the vicious anti-EV ads they ran for years in Europe, it is abundantly clear they had no intention of selling more than a handful of these. They will probably make fewer than 30,000 in any year, even with the new CEO having a greater commitment to EVs. Heck, they may never reach 30,000 cumulative sales in the life of this model (which will be very short).

I am at present , doing a 14 day road trip in Norway and Hertz gave me Toyota BZ4X instead of ID 4 ( which I requested). I was told by the Hertz guy that the range is similar to ID4 , so it won't matter. My 10 days of road trip analysis - the real range at 85-90% battery is just 280-300km and I once got it 98% charged and my range as shown was just 325 km....And the whole road trip, I had to charge it every day because I was not sure of its real range and didn't want to take chance. And Second grouse was it's slow charging. Even when I used a 300 or 150 kw super chargers, to go from 70% to 85% , it would take close to 1 and half hrs....and the only time from 55% to 98%, it took close to 2 hrs. I could see, Hyundai ioniq and even ID 4 who would charge along side with me , would get it charged much quicker. I am not an expert in EV, but this vehicle is a bummer for EV beginners. And it also makes some strange metallic tinnitus like sound all through out.
