The Toyota Prado J150 Vs The Land Rover Discovery 4. Which is value for money?

The Discovery is more luxurious, better looking, and more comfortable to drive and ride in than the Prado but the Prado is more reliable, less expensive to maintain, and virtually indestructible. It depends on what you want in a 4x4 SUV. If you are after comfort and looks and can maintain the vehicle, go for the Discovery. If you want a reliable, long-lasting vehicle that is cheaper to maintain, buy the Prado. The Stability control system in the Discovery is a lifesaver because it saved my life once in England. I was trying to merge on the motorway but all of a sudden this lorry driver decided not to let me in and I had to brake so heavily to avoid crashing into the lorry but in the melee, I hit the metal barrier so hard that the Discovery nearly rolled over. Two wheels were already off the road and I was on just two wheels but the stability system kicked in and stabilized the car bringing it to a stop and back on four wheels. I thought I had rolled and would have rolled onto oncoming traffic. It is a good and essential system to have in a 4x4 especially since these vehicles have a high center of gravity.

There isn't a Discovery 5. After the Discovery 4 (L319), the next one didn't carry the Discovery 5 moniker (L462) - It was just too different. The L462 and the new J250 Prado are closer together. The Prados with the rear door mounted spare are also for the Australian market - huge country with great distances between fuel stops so they need the additional fuel tank space.

All the tech in the Discovery just sounds like stuff that will go wrong, I have a friend who took his to Maasai Mara and when he got back the dash was lit up like Sarit during Christmas and it was beeping like kplc tokens are running out. Cost him 300k in repairs, He drives the 2015 Prado 150 now.

I'm an avid follower... but most of your assessments are subjective...looks and comfort are dependent on personal taste. The prado is not less comfortable and when you are in some deserted rocky place in Lodwar you wont care much about cute gadgets. The prados success and price point point to actual value.. you cant argue with 10 years of market leading sales globally. Pls also don't understate the known engine and suspension problems and costs of land rover. Its not the same since BMW then Tata took over the brand.

Comfort is brought about by physical characteristics of a vehicle, air suspension is objectively way more comfortable than springs, this is not a matter of personal taste, it just is. The "cute gadgets" help with hill descent and traction control for various terrain, they prevent you from getting stuck.

You are correct, been there done that with unnecessary buttons and gimmicks! Some call it "comfort", I call it waste. I woke up one day and my car was leaning and thought I had a flat. Kumbe the air suspension had gone kaput ($3,000.00 repair). This is from Lexus flagship LS 460. Now speaking from a Lexus GX460 perspective which is built on the same platform as the Prado, there is no comparison between a Prado and a Discovery. The huge difference is what's withdrawn from your bank account to cover costs and repairs.

We all know the Disco 3/4 is the Swiss army knife of offroaders it does everything it is a very good car but it's so unreliable it hurts😭even if you are meticulous with maintainance there is always something with those things....now is it worth the hassle that is up to the captain but nobody should defend the reliability of a disco cuz this error of JLR was testing people's patience for real. Story za jaba nayo ni za ukweli even here in the UK it's rep is so bad with Land Rover specialists themselves🤷🏾‍♂️who are we to argue

Clearly people fall for excessive gimmicks (buttons) that are destined to fail, and pay premium for unpractical stuff that they will never use. It's ridiculous. With anything Land Rover, the car will spend more time in the workshop than you driving it or parked in your garage. Give me a Toyota Prado any day, a truck I can rely on with minimum to no coast but scheduled maintenance. I have not seen a single Lexus GX 460 in Kenya which is the ultimate luxury V8 tank that never breaks and can go anywhere. It's made out of the same platform as a Prado. On the flip side, the GX is a gas guzzler (port vs direct injection). I don't mind it as all I do is change oil and keep driving without a care in the world. The Lexus GX truck will survive apocalypse; you just can't kill it! I've car's with them air suspensions, they are NOT worth the trouble and are very expensive fix. If you have deep pockets and time, go for it!! BTW, liked and subscribed!! 👍
