I took my wife's Haval H6 (old spec 1.5T) on a long distance fishing trip to the South Cape last weekend. We had it loaded from corner to corner with rods, bags, gear and had 3 people in it. There is nothing another car could have done on that trip that the Haval didnt do. Great long distance drive. Comfortable. Reasonably light on fuel. Went everywhere we needed it to go with its big wheels. Considering that a similarly specced car in any established brand would have cost my wife at least R200 000 more than she paid for the Haval new back in 2019, these cars are a steal and should always be worth a look when you are looking to upgrade to an SUV or 4x4. My next car WILL BE either a P series 4x4 Double Cab, or the H9 4x4. Too much value in those offerings to not consider it.

An entertaining review but: 1. The Tank warranty is way better and try telling a Toyota owner facing a huge out of warranty repair bill after 3 years that it doesn't matter. Toyotas are reliable but not perfect. 2. Any uphill/downhill traction related test without the same tires is pretty pointless. Even so, the Tank did tremendously despite being in the wrong mode - I didn't see any rocks. Were the Tanks front lockers ignored on purpose because the Prado doesn't have them? 3. Only the Prado ran out of ground clearance despite your expert assuming that it would be better (no bias there). What you completely failed to mention was that the steel underbody protection of the Tank is massively stronger than the plastic fitted to the Prado, which matches its plastic dash. Did you even look under the cars? 4. I would expect a motoring Jounalist to be aware that Toyota has recently announced it will be discontinuing production of this diesel engine and replacing it with a 2.0 four cylinder turbo petrol engine with hybrid options in the future. Careful Toyota, you might be accused of copying China. 5. Last but not least, the point about not getting Tank spares north of the border. Well at least you will make it to the border without getting hijacked.

The moral of the story. Tank allows those who want a vehicle in this segment to now afford one. China is building a huge client base in ZAF and the only issue with verkramte South Africans is that they are reluctant to change their brand loyalty to products like Toyota. Even if they can't afford it they will still buy it so they can look cool in the neighborhood. Many South Africans always want to be "ONE UP" on their friends and family. The only issue I have is that you guys should not be comparing a higher spec Toyota to a lower spec tank. Toyota took years to get their after sales repair stations in Southern Africa so give GWM time since they the new kids on the block.

In a way GWM can be considered the “Toyota” of Chinese brands in South Africa. They have been here the longest, and consistently so, with a good range of decent quality vehicles at reasonable prices. The Tank 500 is impressive in many areas but I have my doubts about the longevity of that hard-working 2L petrol motor. I would buy a Prado with 300k km on with confidence, but the Tank would have me steering well clear, justified or not… By the way, a 28 degree side slope angle is plenty, it would feel highly unnerving to the uninitiated! Theoretically it’s still perfectly safe however, most vehicles are stable up to about 35 to 40 degrees of side angle, some can even manage 45 or slightly more. In practice though it’s risky to traverse terrain with a side slope of more than 20 degrees. A typical loose off road surface would have the vehicle sliding sideways at not much more than that, which can get risky fast and may even be the catalyst to a major rollover. Unless of course you’re on sand, where any amount of side slope angle is best avoided if you don’t have considerable sand driving experience and you know what to do 😉

I think the new Prado just looks better especially compared to the previous generation. Plus Toyota's reliability, I'd take the Toyota any day 😅😂

There's absolutely no comparison between these two vehicles. If you want peace of mind and your money back when trading in after 10 years or more, the Landcruiser is the CLEAR winner. It'll hold up much better over time as well. I'm a diesel vehicle technician by trade and can attest to the ruggedness of the diesel motor from Toyota.

Issue with these type of comparisons...its the new kids on the block(tech heavy not yet tried and tested) vs tried and tested(not so tech heavy)...the majority of market purchasing now like the features a car offers and will lool past established brands when it comes to price point...these new kids cam only be compared to each other and then also as alternatives. Vehicles consist of more than just engines and there are more expensive issues that can go wrong on a car irrespective of the brand.

There’s no peace from Toyota vehicles, chances of having it for 10 years are slim considering it uses the GD6. It will get stolen.

They said the American Jeep etc was tried and tested, and they also said Japanese was cheap rubbish as new comers. Chinese EV and Hybrid is alread way ahead of Japanese. Also, China have the biggest car markets, lots of Russian energy to manufacture cheaper and better.

The tank is a hybrid. We all know how well hybrids handles the open roads or towing. The tank holds its own but I cant see how a 2L petrol will compete against a 2.8D in the Prado long distance or towing anything.

For that price point , would go tank 500 , toyota is not worth it anymore in South Africa

Now do a followup video of the exact same tests after 10 years of use and 500,000 km.

The resale values on a Prado are very impressive! Doubt it would be the case with the GWM... Prado is also renowned for its stunning reliability and longevity.

Gmw are reliable. We have tons of gmw bakkiee on the road that are still going for years.

@@Rooibos_ZA Let me guess - those are the 2.2 Toyota 4Y, or 2.8 TD Isuzu, or 2.4 MPI Mitsubishi engined models?
