@@shockker2 Toyota tested it for about 4 years, and they probably tested it with the vents open. Then they figured out that the engine/brakes won't get to operating temperature (aka the car doesn't work) so they had to make the vents fake. However, they placed it in places where once you add power, you won't have to cut holes in your bumper for vents, and you can simply open them up in about 25 minutes

Toyota said the fake vents are there in case you want to replace them with real ones. They’re strategically placed to allow easy modifications for wind flow. With the way they’re placed on the car; it currently achieves better fuel mpg but if you need the extra cooling for an extra radiator you might put in then the fake vents are removable.

Everything it doesn't have (or just not high performance enough for need of them). They're so when you put 100K into the car, it doesn't have holes sawn into it. @@shy8054 they are but they have become such an essential part of a car’s design that they aren’t purely seen from a functional point of view. Otherwise we’d have ugly cars. Whether they’re meant to be for aftermarket modifications or not, those “vents” make the car look amazing despite the vocal minority.

Many people here think that the MK4 was a crazy car with outstanding performance when, in fact, it was not. The MK5 more than lives up to the Supra name performance-wise. MK4: 320hp in its most powerful factory form, 0-60 in 4.9 seconds. MK5: 335hp, 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. The automatic transmission aside, the MK5 is a great car with more potential than the MK4. People who hate on it because BMW built parts of it are just stupid. Everyone knows BMW makes great inline-6 engines.

Every opening in the body creates a ton of drag which harms fuel efficiency, so if you don't actually need the extra air for cooling for example, it's better to just close it up. In it's stock form it obviously doesn't need the extra air, if you upgrade to more power, bigger brakes,... you might however need the extra cooling.

All these ‘fake vents’ were made for after market parts to replace them from manufactures because of the low horsepower the mk5 supra makes it doesn’t need as much airflow and engine cooling as the engine would be ‘too cool’ if they were open. The front of the supra has airways which the after market part can open up/replace and it lets a lot more air into cool the engine and provide cooling to brakes etc. This means when you upgrade parts e.g. new turbo and you want more cooling, you can get vents to open up the fake vents

None of the vents can be opened, they’re all blocked bt something, the ines in the front corners.. blocked by the strut towers, the ones in the door, literally blocked by the door, the ones in the back, a frame brace in the trunk they cannot be made functional without a wide body kit
