Back in the 50s and 60s when Westerns were at their zenith, Arvo Ojala was the man Hollywood went to teach actors how to handle a pistol, do a fast draw. He taught just about every famous cowboy lead actor that you can think of. Ironically, it's Ojala that was shot each week by Matt Dillon in the opening of GUNSMOKE. In an interview Ojala was asked who was the best student he ever instructed, without hesitation he replied Sammy Davis Jr., that Davis was a natural at the fast draw and trick shooting. I can recall a couple of episodes of THE RIFLEMAN where Davis demonstrated his ability and he was pretty awesome. I also read where he kept a holstered pair of Colts in his dressing room in Vegas and on tour, doing tricks as a way of concentrating and to entertain guests.

Wow. Thank you so very much that was great. Not a lot of people know this but Sammy Davis JR used to be the fastest gun in Hollywood, with both hands

Not so sure bout that , Dean Martin ( who wasnt slow himself and Clint Eastwood) said Glen Ford was the fastest ,and Martin knew Sammy well

I always heard that Peter Brown was the fastest, at least at fanning shots. He was also great friends with Sammy Davis.

Jerry Lewis was also said to be the fastest in Hollywood. But whoever really was there is no doubt Sammy was fast and one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century.

A hell of a good western. Sometimes the older version is the best.

This wasn't a Hollywood movie, it was a TV movie of the week.

Sammy Davis, Jr (consummate entertainer and Sinatra's BFF, Rat Pack original); Earnest Borgnine (Academy Award winner); and Jim Davis (Jock Ewing, Dallas) 3 fabulous actors and stars, makes me long for the era and all the classy stars/friends that have gone on. I can't believe I've never seen this movie.

I also noticed that Ernie Borgnine's characters' son, Davey, that gets killed at the beginning of the movie is in the credits as Bill Katt, ( 1:14:00 ) the very same William Katt who played Carrie Whites' jock boyfriend in Stephen King's horror hit Carrie, as well as later on starring as the lead actor in the hit TV series "The Greatest American Hero". His real life Mom was Barbara Hale who played Della Street in the Perry Mason series. Small world.
