What about a test plot in your hard gumbo bean stubble, mold board plow a few acres, get down deep and turn it over, let it sit all winter, come spring hit it with a field cultivator and just before planting hit it with a high speed disc.

Thanks for another busy busy video Chet and everyone. Lots going on right now inbetween soybean harvesting. Lots of what we call busy work. I do hear your concerns about the soil conditions Chet but try not to let it ruin your day. I have been there too and some issues are out of our control. Weather drives our soil conditions and the weather is an item we can’t control. You take it in stride real well : hang in there Chet!!!!!!!!!! Sorry to hear about the breakdown on your combine. Hopefully you and Dougo can get it fixed relatively soon and fairly quickly. Always something with machinery. Hang in there. Lots of busy work for you all in the shop right now. Plus trying to get some soybeans harvested as they get ready AND then on to corn🌽. Busy time!!!!!! About it I guess. You all take care and be safe. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

We used to till straight after harvest and many times the implement just scratched the top of the ground however when it rained it allowed the moisture to soak in which made for a nice working the second time. It is worth scratching over even if it does not seem to be doing any good.

I wonder if Larsons have ever seriously looked at trying to improve the "Gumbo" soil! I have heard positive outcomes of farmers removing areas of such soil and planting it with Winter Wheat, BuckWhat and ploughit back into the soil before it seeds in the spring and repeating again the following autumn and spring. The results have been very positive. Also an option would be to plant with Alfalfa in Autumn, plough in in spring, re plant in Spring and plough Autumn befor planting your preferred crops. Guess it all comes down to money though.

Hard clay soils Gypsum could possibly help depending on your calcium level It could be to much calcium The other option is a cover crop Like the Daikon “ driller “ radish It’s taproot can grow from 12 to 24” Breaking up your clay and adding organic matter At some point in the past someone may have tried sand to loosen the clay What I understand about this is the sand mixed with the clay will turn the clay into cement as it dries The cover crop seems to be the better option They say that Daikon radish because of its taproot dose the best job You guys our one of my favorite farm shows
