The Trade of a Trimmer (Upholstery) & Decorative Striping | Engels Coach Shop

In earlier years the term "upholstery" applied mainly to the furniture industry, while the carriage industry employed "trimmers" for their seat and top work. Today I'm going to trim out a set of shafts, getting them ready to be used by the horse to pull the buggy. Different styles of harnesses could be used. so shafts and doubletrees my vary accordingly, but this is a common trim style for shafts. Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles encompasses many different trades and disciplines. Thanks for following along.

In the UK, there is a rich tradition of painted decoration, with its own folk lore, on the canal boats. They even paint the water jugs and coal buckets. It incorporates lining, but extends to floral work too. I’m told it’s possible to “read” a boat via its decorations. Very similar in a way, folk taking pride in possessions even if they are practical working tools. Of course, when I was a lad the Romanies used to have painted wagons, which was a great source of pride for them and very ornate.

One of the things that makes this channel so watchable is the incredible video quality. I suspect that lighting is a large part of it. When David is talking directly to the camera, the quality is on a par with what we expect from a TV studio broadcast. The fact that it is still 1080P makes it even more remarkable. I am sure this is not a a happy accident. It is the same attention to detail that David applies to everything he he does. It's very impressive.

One of my best friends is a horse named Red. Red saved my butt more then once. Sure, he would spook at a squirrel moving dried leave around, but when he reared, he did so with full knowledge there was this weight on his back that needed to stay on. As a Physicist, I can recognize compensation for center of gravity. He did this during an instinctual response. That horse was a pro. But when I see the thought that went into this level of horse to carriage interface (today's term), I can see there were other Reds, and other folks who could interpret what the horse was saying was not going to work and that which would. The subtle changes in the engineering I'm seeing here prove that. Amazing. Totally and completely amazing.

I take your point about the imperfections that define human work as opposed to the perfection from machines. I make furniture as a (serious) hobby with a particular focus upon the (British ) Arts and Crafts movement and the (American) Prairie and Mission styles. I’m not a martyr to hand work (particularly as I get older and weaker) and so I use machinery to do the hard work of sawing and dimensioning. Then I take over with the fitting and finishing so that the finished piece has all the marks that come from my imperfect work. So most people can tell a piece of handcrafted from a piece of machine-made just as most people can tell a pinstripe painted by hand or from a machine. And I know which one pleases me immensely. Even if it’s not perfect

When this buggy is done, would love to see a horse in nothing but a halter, be fully harnessed up and attached to the buggy. That would be amazing and help make sense of all the work you have done.

Not happening, you never hitch a horse to a buggy without the driving bridle. If anything happens and the horse takes off you need to be able to bring the animal under control. Otherwise you have a 1200# animal with a massive battering ram attached to it and no way to stop it until the animal calms down or gets the buggy stuck somewhere. You don’t eat that image in your head.

The differences in shape and variation gives character to a hand made piece. The different styles and the variations also became like a signature of the people that did the work. Some people could even tell who made something by the variation or style.

Your attention to detail is top shelf! Young people don’t have a clue of the detail a fine coach has. This level is where automobiles got there trim! What Dave modestly didn't say is that all these different trades were practised by different people while Dave is a master of it all. PS, watching Dave trimming the shafts I thought "dont they do electricians shrink tubing in big enough sizes? Just slide a tube on then turn the heat gun on and shrink to fit.

Excellent camera work! I think the double striped hub flange is a better look. You probably intuitively thought the same when you returned to the project. Your videos helped me appreciate the 160 year old original condition (very barn worn) buggy I saw this week at our county fair. I took particular notice of the striping. Great point about the variation that comes with hand drawn artwork Dave. I make stained glass windows and fully concur. People ask, why don't you draw the design on computer? Nothing looks worse than perfect computer drawn artwork. Old panels are never perfect. The hand of the artist/craftsman is invaluable. I should get some lining brushes for glass painting.If you think lining is fiddly, try it with glass paint. One mistake , then you start over again.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to record, edit, and post these videos. Watching the effort required to build a buggy or wagon makes me wonder what a buyer, back in the day, would have to work at to afford one. Is this two seat buggy for a banker, doctor, well-to-do rancher? Would this style of buggy be the equivalent of today's Ford, or a Lincoln, or something else? Would it have been a "daily driver" or saved for "Sunday Best". Sincere thanks Sir.

It's a good question, one I would also like to know the answer to. If the workman earned a $1 a day, and took 2 months to make one (8 x 6 day weeks might be what Dave has put into this, though it's hard to tell really - you could give me a year and I'd still be on the first wheel), then that's $48 plus the carriage shop owners profit. If 1$ a day was only for the unskilled, then double it, makes it $96 plus profit. Either way, well within the means of a doctor or perhaps succesful farmer. This is just speculation, but my point is that skilled time was very, very cheap 150 years ago. It's hard to equate Dave with that, but he's a lot wealthier than them, even if he isn't wealthy by our standards today.

Dave the beauty of hand striping is they can't see both sides at the same time only a pro would have seen that I sometimes used to do this on purpose I called it a deliberate mistake, it could easily be put wright but you would be amazed at how many of the owners would say leave it lets see how many find it and it's a great talking point. And, real chrome bumpers. Two tone paint jobs and "hand" painted striping as you showed in your video. Looking forward to next history lesson

17:49 see that little bubble in the vinyl between your forefinger and thumb? If it bothers you, use a blow dryer to warm and relax the vinyl to lay flat. I like a blow dryer over a heat gun because the heat is moderate, affording more control. You can easily melt vinyl with a heat gun if you aren't careful. (You can do the same with leather, just wet it first.) 💖🌞🌵😷

A friend of mine goes to fair in different counties and in different states he black powder coated all his chains so they don't rust and it holds up better than paint. His buggy was built by some Pennsylvania Amish its black with gold striping. The striping was done at a auto paint and body shop. The guy said if he ever needed it redone to bring it back because it was diffsrent and fun for him.

I missed that outer stripe completely. As for the individuality and the 'errors' in hand painting, I seem to recall a curator of the British museum talking about the workmanship of a sword. She said we have been spoiled by mass production, human made things are never perfect in the way we think of them now.
