I'm Filipino and I grew up there and I moved to America. In the Philippines kids would practice the balisong as a game. But when you grow up you take it around with you to use it with self defense to protect you're self. And they flip so they can quickly open the knife. Also they always move cause they can do multiple combos like our martial art arnis or Kali so they can quickly take down the other person

I play guitar and actually find a lot of similarities between how you go about explaining this video and how others talk about musical improvisation... Literally just about everything is paralleled. Like how you talk about different styles, different moves (like guitar licks), their reasonings, freestyling (or soloing), and even practicing in the manner of putting together strings of moves and then adding embellishments like the use of the off hand, just like a guitarist would string together licks or techniques and add in things like vibrato... Very interesting.

I enjoyed your video. I used to have a balisong (i lost it years ago after having it for almost 10 years. Sad). @wesleyruff49978 жыл бұрын
what i dont understand about the balisong as a self defense weapon is that no matter who you are where you are or what time period your in, you would not under any circumstances, EVER do tricks with your knife in the middle of a fight. you pull it out. you open it, you stab. you run. end of end of self defence. it would stand to reason that the most effective way to fight is to not flip it at all, since no matter how well you control your flipping. it wont be as stable or reliable as simply holding the knife while you fight. am i missing something?

@cutlerylover ...I don't know where you learned that move at 11:5 but your DEAD ON FILIPINO STREET SMART with that one! The ONE FLIP open as u pull the blade from your pocket...Depending on which end of the knife u put first into yer pocket before that...but that is actually correct...with one major flaw, and this is important...if a perceived attacker goes headon ...move body SIDEWAYS , do a somewhat FOREMAN STANCE as u pull the knife away from ur pocket with ur other arm/hand right in front of your chest (to anticipate blocking, to push attacker back create distance, or visual distraction to cover the apth of your next move and Balance) do the one flip...and don't use a SLASH as a first option..its more effective with a JAB thrust kinda like an uppercut ..to the SIDE OF BODY, ABDOMEN, NECK.... (Don't try this on anyone Please ...peace!)

when I was there they mainly open with control movements, actually the younger ones didn't care much about them, I had to go to mid age to older folks and lot of them want to know about things that I was doing. you know the show stuff, the best way that I describe the way they approach the use of a blade is that they will cut you up like their cutting up a cow or pig. they use more fileting motions than stabbing even with an icepick grip , they use the other hand as a monitor of your movements or protector from your advances

You're right. Although a plus to a Balisong is that it doubles as a impact weapon. Meaning you would say attack with your blade, flip in, and strike with the end of your knife in your attackers temple. As with a normal say fixed blade you have the issue of your blade point towards you at the moment of the impact.

@TheTriforceCrusader9 жыл бұрын
There's advantages and disadvantages... If you are the one getting robbed and the robber is using a balisong, they will probably try to be "boss" and start flipping it to scare you, which gives you an advantage to either get away or pull your weapon and get them. If you are the one carrying the balisong, what you can do is you can do a quick draw and have it ready faster than your opponent. As the carrier of the balisong, you can also hold the bite handle and using the blade and the weight of the handle to bite down on the enemy's extremities or shoulders or whatever your target. You can do some unique combat moves with the balisong, believe it or not. Me, I would carry it (if I was old enough) only to be used as a tool if I was going to work on something as a hobby or if I was building something or other so I can flip it when I want. If I wanted to carry a knife for defense, it would be a folder, a fixed blade, or better yet, a sword as those are more practical xD

in a combat situation a balisong is more practical than a gun in point blank range due to the fact the balisong can be a knife and a blunt impact tool if not open once open by flipping which in this case is faster than using both hands or a folding knife and if you are trained enough you can fight an opponent while flipping a balisong for intimidation and combat furthermore a balisong is also used by people who actually know how to fight like in the philippines also a balisong is more longer than a folder which is why it is illegal and whatever you say that when a person is flipping a balisong and you can just kick it away you cant because when a balisong user knows how to flip he can stab you instantly unlike a folding knife that just opens and closes also balisong utilizes CQC since filipinos created CQC since america just developed it a bit more

Your on point about Filipino using balisong.. A True Filipino who carry a knife, meant to kill..they don't want you to know that they are carrying a Knife.. you will only know they carry a knife when you felt the knife attack.

Hi Cutlerylover, your good at flipping balisongs, but I just like to point out something while flipping it I see your index finger far away from the hinge, and that could be a dangerous, one wrong move your have your balisong cutting the back of your hand, I may suggest putting your index finger and your thumb close to the hinge while flipping it with that, you can block or stop the blade from moving in mid flip, and you would be able to flip it much faster.

flipping is part of the balisong repertoire. aside from using it in training knife fighting it is also use as a weapon which you can do something functional artistic moves.

the traditional filipino defensive use of the balisong is to flip open (with the blade facing upward), stab, slash upward, flip close, walk away....and we always stab the abdomen where no bone could interfere with the knife

What is the name of the movement you do in combination with basic horizontal? Is it windmill or what?

Yep. Filipinos (specially old folks) whip it in the most simplest way no rollover/areal whatever since Balisongs were made to be 10% utility knife and 90% as a WEAPON. But I like using it with Kali ala Jason Bourne..:P

practice stabbing with your balisong by slashing and stabbing banana stalk most people in the Philippines who are in the provinces and are farmers are use to hacking and stabbing because they use to swish their bolo to clean grasses, bushes and small trunks; and also use ur balisong to slash into pieces meat which you are going to fry or mix with your viand. Do not use kitchen knife.

I'm so jealous right now because my friend just found his parents old traditional Filipino balisong. It's double edged and seems to have ivory handles. (and btw I'm in Canada where balisongs are illegal)

Back in the spanish era, they call it "Baling Sungay" which means (Broken Horn) because during that time, balisongs are made from broken buffalo's horns. I bet many spanish soldiers got a good taste of slashes from it during those good ol' bloody days. lol

Whats the most complicated balisong move you know, Jeff? I am working on the Helix, still am having trouble transitioning from the second to the third rollover.

i think the only criticism i would have is on technicality. that would be that there is a difference between slashing and cutting. i hope that in self defense one would not be slashing wildly but rather would have the focus and intention for a real cut. love your vids!

What trainer would you recommend as the "first" purchase? I'd love a Benchmade 42 trainer obviously but I can't find any place that actually sells them.
