History of a Dish

5 жыл бұрын

Today we take a look at the history of another one of my favourite meals ever, the Full English Breakfast, a.k.a ’the fry up’. The recipe below is from The English Breakfast Society (EBS), who are a learned society of fellows, dedicated to the tradition and heritage of the full English breakfast. Good on you fellas I say and keep up the great work!

In Australia, pubs traditionally serve a fry-up as a dinner (sometimes breakfast/lunch) menu option. It’s the basic English breakfast without the black pudding, but may have other items included such as lamb chops, a piece of steak or ham steak, hash browns or chips, or both fried and scrambled eggs. If anybody hasn’t heard of this, you’re welcome!

An interesting glance into history. One should also note that an English Gentleman is never waited on at breakfast when in court or company of his peers. Self service with food and broadsheets is the norm.

Awesome video! I had no idea that a full English breakfast started as an upper class dish and then made its way into the working classes. I also like the idea of being well-read: even though I don't read the newspaper while eating breakfast, I do listen to videos on KZbin--the 21st century equivalent, I guess, lol. Great video! Subbed for more!

Got linked here from reddit and I like what you are trying to do. If you are going to go after the historical angle you might want to start citing sources below the video. It's one thing to present the information, but far more useful to back up claims for anyone who wants to dig deeper.

Thank you Matthew for your time and comment, really appreciate it. Nice idea and I will take it under consideration. My aim is to make the videos a tad lighthearted & enjoyable, albeit factually correct. They're not meant to be an ultimate in-depth study, more a general overlook at the origins of a particular dish. But, I take your point and it would add another level to the videos. Cheers buddy!

Do you find any connection with Bernays’ capitalist revolution revolving around the use of bacon and his encouragement of a fuller American breakfast during the early 1920s-30s to the popularity of the English breakfast that you place near the same time?

No such thing as an English breakfast, it is a cooked breakfast and known all over the world as that. The English want to take possession of everything, including the British language. The so called English breakfast came into the language when the English started to go to France in the 60's and found the French did not have the same breakfast, now called the Continental breakfast. An Aussie in the outback having bacon and eggs is not saying to himself this English breakfast is great as he watches the cricket match against the Poms !
@dee2251

It’s not the British language. It’s the English language. The Scottish and Welsh have their own language and yes, the full English is a traditional English dish that gone around the world because the British took it with them.

The Magnacarter and the Declaration of Arbroath were written in Latin as was the Bible, that is the origin of the British Language. Gaelic is a from the Vikings and only in regions just like Cornish and Bretton that died out. Why is the Bank of England the bank of the United Kingdom, even when it was founded by a Scotsman, its because of the English attitude? @@dee2251
