October 2014. The Angels vs the Royals in the ALDS. Three games: that’s the sum total of Mike Trout’s exploits in MLB’s postseason. One trip, a sweep, and it was over. For the past 8 seasons, the Angels have finished with a losing record. Fangraphs have pegged the Angels as having a .4% chance of winning the World Series in 2024. They are also projected to finish with another losing season.
This is despite having one of the greatest players in the history of MLB on the team. But how could this be? How could so many losses stack up when arguably the greatest American-born talent is manning centerfield? How did Mike Trout’s career turn into a tragic tale of loss, pain, and suffering?

He didn't waste his career. He's been at the top of his sport for a decade, and will be first ballot HOF. He never won a championship or a World Series, but that's down to limitations with his team and owners. He's certainly been richly rewarded and his family is financially secure for life. The thing about Trout’s/Moreno’s Angels was that they were a tease. They did sign players, but almost all turned out comically terrible. Whenever spring comes around everybody had some hope in the Angels which would get die off by the middle of the season. They got into weird situations such as under-invested, devastated and depleted bullpen that necessitated a draft in which they drafted mostly pitchers. Insane. It’s doubly tragic that they got their hands on Ohtani. They had some sort of systematic problem that nobody seems to be bothered enough to resolve.

It's because great pitching is the most important part of a winning baseball games. Priority order of the 5 tools regarding a team as a whole. 1 - pitching, 2nd - hitting for contact, 3rd - base running, 4th - hitting for power, 5th -fielding. When teams are built with this in mind, they win baseball games. It's not like basketball where star players can carry a team

That is not true. In basketball, you need a team to win a championship. It's a lot harder to win a championship in the nba, much like the mlb. A star player in the nba needs a decent team in order to get over the hump much like baseball.

Ok the point being that in the NBA you have five guys on the floor and one great player can greatly have an effect...he can touch the ball nearly every posession. In MLB, you can be great, but your 1/9 in a batting order and you just get to field balls that are hit to you. Everything else is out of your control

I just finished the second season of my Angels rebuild in the Show where they magically made it to the World Series. On one hand, the franchise mode is getting too easy, on the other, I did player lock from the beginning of September with Trout, going on a 20-4 run to not only make the playoffs, but secure the division with 2 games to spare. Then player locked Trout through to the 2025 World Series against the Padres. They won game 1, and lost the next 4 despite Trout (me) doing everything he could to try to climb back. Onto season 3 of the rebuild, and pitching was clearly the issue. Rebuilt the bullpen and replaced 2 starters. Starting to spend big money (for the Angels) to get back and win it.

The sad thing to say about the Angels, they been like this since the early 80’s to 90’s They had big names on those teams, but was lacking certain players, and always lost to the Boston Red Sox. They finally win it all in 2002. You figure they continue success after that, but nope. Back to their old ways. Trout is one of those players, dedicated to one team and will probably end up retiring there regardless if they ever win a World Series or not.

I kind of respect Trout actually for sticking with the Angels. Chasing Championships isn't everything in life to these guys. He has been loyal to the Angels, probably really loves the area of Southern Cal, he's had a tremendous career. His body I think is falling apart though and I think he's gonna really struggle to ever play even 75% of a year. I wouldn't be surprised if he's got to retire early before his contract ends. I'm sure he wished LA was better and thought they would be...I'd say it's a bit telling of the Angels how many bad contracts they've given out, and now Trout's contract could be a bad one really...just an organization that rarely is making the right calls on these contracts.

As an Astros fan, I often see my team facing Trout because they'e in the same division. I always think, "man if we had you and Ohtani in blue and orange we'd be unstoppable." I've been a dedicated fan of the Angels for the past 15+ years, and it absolutely kills me to say this because the Angels had been such a big part of my sports-loving life, but this year I've finally had enough and jumped ship. I don't watch them, listen to them on the radio, read about them, or attend any of their games. Purged clean. Getting nothing for Ohtani when they had 2 years to trade him was the final straw. This ownership isn't serious about winning, so they don't deserve fans. They have one less, now. As for Trout, can't feel too sorry for him. He drank the Kool-Aid and chose his fate. Since he was drafted in 2009 the following long suffering or usually incompetent teams have hoisted the commissioner’s trophy- SF Giants 3x, Royals, Cubs, Astros 2x, Nationals and Rangers. All of whom with the exception of the Cubs coming off a 98 win season in 2008 had the chance to draft him. Worse yet was how they didn’t even make the playoffs in the expanded 16 team format in 2020 🤦‍♂️

I play full-court basketball twice a week. I play pretty hard, running up and down the court. I have not missed a game in years and have never had an athletic surgery. I'm 62 years old. I have been asked a number of times how I have done that. First, I have always kept myself in good physical condition. Perhaps just as important, I have been lucky. Another player has never run down court, slipped and crashed into the side of my knees. And finally, I am put together with some pretty good glue, so to speak. My bones are strong and the ligaments and tendons seem to be heavy-duty. Trout has probably been unlucky. And I would guess that his tendons and ligaments are not well-matched to his muscle strength, speed and quickness.

Sir, a minor point, but it hurt my heart when you pronounced Al Kaline as “Al Ka-LINE” instead of “Al KAY-line”. I’m sure Kaline made about 1% of Trout’s take home pay. But a guy like Al Kaline wasn’t in it for the money. He just loved baseball, loved the Tigers, and he did have that one World Series win in 1968. Yes, the last year without playoffs. If he had some help, he might have been able to take off those days with the freak injuries. He is such a great player, he deserves to at least let the Rangers beat them in the ALCS. I would root for whatever team he went to for a chance to sniff the trophy.

I love videos this and the comments that go along with them. It really blows my mind. Baseball players care about one thing and one thing only, every last dollar they can get. They gave the guy 400 million and we're supposed to feel sorry for him they didn't surround him with better players??? MLB players will play in the worst stadiums for the worst teams as long as they get theirs. Do you think Trout would give some of the money back if it meant it would have got to play in more playoff games?? I promise you he wouldn't so lets not pretend he's been hard done by.
