I hate all of those games. Regardless if it’s Hellblade, The Order 1886 or Ryse or xyz. Where gameplay is so limited and it’s just a game to be called game, while the order 1886 would have been a much better movie and ryse, well ryse should have focused on being fun and entertaining first before it’s pretty. Every title has its fanbase, I know that, even ryse and the order 1886, but it’s absolute not my cup of tea. Graphics alone are nothing. Even the order for example would look even today impressive.

For me, this game is a great weekend blockbuster, it's short, it's fun, looks great and has high octane action, the concept is simple and the gameplay is simple yet addictive and it has a decent story and great set pieces, doesn't rely too heavily on difficult puzzles and it can be finished quickly. that's what i enjoy about it, we have enough open world action games and rpgs to go around. i miss great hack and slash games.

I absolutely loved Ryse as a game, even buying the day one console so I could play it. I will never understand the hate towards it but maybe that's just my Rome biased attitude. Sure, it was historically innacurate but the gameplay was fun as fuck. Especially when you turned off the easy mode button prompts and learned to play it just by seeing the functions and adapting to it in hard mode. Definitely a missed opportunity by those who lay hate on the game without actually playing it. Especially the multiplayer mode that had gladiator fights with friends. So much fun that died out so quickly.

Ryse never got a fair shake tbh. It started as a First person melee game, then old MS tried forcing Kinect onto Crytek, then eventually they ditched it and went with a 3rd person action game. The game got very little time in it's actual last phase of development, of course it was repetitive. They didn't get the chance to actually expand on their final phase of the project. It was still a solid game with incredible cinematic presentation and voice acting. It deserves a second chance.

Or a month. Or even a year without a full team. You can dislike the game if you'd like and I can disagree but there are plenty of fan made 6 months into development Unreal games on Steam in early access that prove that. Even the best examples of 1 person made Unreal games like Bright Memory Infinite took years to make. If Crysis is just a tech demo and not a game I wonder what you make of Call Of Duty? Just a demo? I mean, it's shorter, more linear and has less diverse gameplay across the board. What makes that a game and not Crysis?

I think where Ryse really shone as a game was not only it’s graphics, story (which was perfect length for this type of game) and world building, but it’s combat; quick time events and the animations were all top notch and while it could seem repetitive, if you played its hardest difficulty and turned off the colour highlights, that is where the game really stood out as an intense hack n slash combat simulator. It’s really a shame that they didn’t take up Microsoft’s offer for a sequel because I truly believe the sequel could have been incredible.

Dude, you are overlooking something very important here. Back in the years following the Original Ryse the xbox division was in utter turmoil and it was really only in late 2016 that we began to see the first fruits of Phil Spencer's efforts to start turning things around. Microsoft studios were known to be micromanagers of devs (as you pointed out) and it was really only from 2017 onwards that devs started (slowly) to see that Microsoft would let them develop their own stuff largely without interference. So in 2014/15 when Microsoft were willing to meet the expense of a sequel to Ryse as well as acquiring the overall IP it was Phil Spencer's early attempt at getting major IP, studios on board with xbox after the utter disaster of xbox one's launch. Look at what happened to Rare, to Lionhead, look at Scalebound. I think Crytek made the correct decision based on what they knew at the time. Perhaps 2021's xbox division would have been able to pull this deal off with a promise to let Crytek make the best game possible without someone looking over their soldier. However, it wasn't 2021....it was 2014/15. A very different xbox and a very different time.

I am a Crytek fan because I love the Crysis games. So of course I would also play Ryse: Son of Rome, well sadly it was an Xbox One exclusive so I couldn't play it. But when it got ported to PC I instantly bought and played it. As someone who didn't have much or any experience with this kind of genre I found the gameplay to be snappy and sadisfying, a bit repetetive but not to a point where it dragged down my enjoyment of the game. I even found the story to be interesting even if it was relatively simple. And that the PC version included a Nanosuit skin for the Gladiator mode was just the icing on the cake. I played through the game multiple times on all difficulties and unlocked every achivement, excluding those for the multiplayer because no one played that. It would be nice if we got Ryse 2, but at least we got a Crysis 4 announcement, even though I think the series had a sadisfying ending with the third game.

I played Ryse: Son of Rome a few months ago when I got Xbox Game Pass for just £1, I played quite a few games that were on Game Pass but Ryse stuck out to me. For a 2013 game the graphics still hold up incredibly well but the gameplay definitely got repetitive, wasn't terrrible but it just became a standard Hack N' Slash with almost no difficulty spike. But what really stood out to me and why I still think about the game from time to time was the brillant visual design with an unfortunately unfulfilled but still interesting narrative. The way the roman armours and architecture look, With an impressive "D-Day" like early level showcasing the visuals of this game. how the land "beyond the wall" - a land beyond Romes borders is perceived as some sort of nightmare land and the scots dewelling there look and sound like demons or monsters. I think the cutscenes and the acting are fantastic and the inclusion of these two mysterious deities appearing throughout the game and "influencing" characters is great. One moment they are there, and the next they are not. With a more or less generic revenge storyline which could of been expanded upon if the game was a longer length. You can complete the game in about 5-6 hours in a straight run. The game is short which is why I believe sadly this narrative didnt get the attention is deserved. If you can pick this up for the right price and you are willing to just sit back and turn your brain off for some simple Hack N' Slash gameplay, you will definitely have a good time with it. I really do think this game deserves a sequel. It really does have potential to be something special

Persona 4! My ears perked up when I heard the background music and I couldn't figure it out for the rest of the video, then it hit me at the end. It's the Velvet Room music from Persona 4.

I bought this game as bundle deal on Steam along with Hunt Showdown. I had a great time playing RYSE. Loved the camera of the character, the atmosphere, and the finishers were cool.

I wish they took that offer from Microsoft. There aren't many games these days with a Roman theme and none that have the lavish art direction of Ryse. It really made Rome feel like it was the be all end all of the world, and it was killing itself through its gluttony.

I saw the title and was like, hey Ryse, I liked that one. It has some cool combat and some great moments and I also think anything Rome is a great setting. But I never finished it. I can’t tell you why but my guess would be I got a little bored and moved on. I’ll have to go back and finish it

The best underrated game from the 8th gen. I hate how it got buried so unjustly even though the story, while simple, is really powerful (at least in my opinion, I get a bit of a Berserk vibe from it), the gameplay is actually not as braindead as people make it out to be (especially on harder difficulties), and the visuals are so incredible even to this day. I honestly can't think of a game that truly looks better in every way, even today.

I love Ryse, I played it for the first time in 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Heard bad things about it when it came out so I didn't bother trying but once quarantine hit I decided to give it a chance and was surprised.

I’ll give it to them, Cryteks multiplayer game Hunt: Showdown, is by far the most unique competitive experience I’ve ever played. I’m sad they’ve moved away from story driven narratives, but in all honesty they are doing something truly unique in the multiplayer world.

This game needs a sequel. It is, to me, a product that combines all the old 3rd party action game like 99 Knights, Heavenly Sword, or something similar. It was simple and fun to play. Repetitive of course. A simple switch between characters with different melee weapons would be a quick fix.

Bought the game for 5$. Had 4 hours of straight fun, I didn't get bored of the combat because I thought it was so satisfying, and the graphics was just so jawdropping, even these days. So for me this game was well worth the 5$! Story pretty forgettable, but not bad. The set pieces are pretty cool. And I loved the game was so easy. Give it a go.

If this game had released during the height of VR popularity as a VR title rather than an Xbox Kinect title, it would have been great. The short length of the game would make enough sense as many VR games play more like tech demos than actual games, but people still like them. Think something like Blade and Sorcery, but more blade and less sorcery.

No wonder the project was a fiasco, when its only inciting "idea" was "let's make it the best-looking game up to date!". Gameplay? No idea. Story? No idea. Setting? No idea. It's like making a movie where the core "idea" is "this movie will have the best set design ever!". No story, no setting, no nothing, but that. And then being surprised that such a movie turns out to be a shallow piece of boring nonsense.

Wasn’t disappointed at all. Great story. Great graphics. Great combat. Now that I think ab it again I might go back and play it again it’s been a few years

I played this PC port "game" like a 30 minute demo. Done after roughly that amount of playtime and never went back. Because that's all it was, a boring, low functionality, low feel demo, extended, padded and sold as a full priced game. It boggles my mind that anyone has a positive view of this software, but that explains so much about the current state of the gaming industry, especially surrounding most console-based games.
